@bananamonkey Someone I know's dad is called James James but for I would imagine obvious reasons he's always called Jimmy or Jim.

That makes me think “James James Morrison Morrison commonly known as Jim ..”

There is a Dash in DS1’s school

and we briefly had a Saphic in DS2’s nursery, which was the parents attempt to do a you-neeq ’Sapphire’ but clearly had absolutely no idea what they had actually done
I feel really sorry for what that poor child is going to encounter in later life

Dash could be short for Dashiell, unusual but I've known one.

Clarence. For a girl. Her dad earnestly explained to me that she had been named in honour of Clarence Thomas, ffs, shortly after he became a US Supreme Court justice involving the hearings where he had to answer serious charges of sexual harassment from Anita Hill. It being the early 90s of course, she was not taken seriously and he was. And a truly shitty justice he has turned out to be.

My mum had cousins, born in the 1920s, called Bramble and Valiant. I kind of love Bramble.

I always thought Clarence was a girl's name when I was younger, like Florence.

How else would you pronounce it if not a german speaker ??

I'd only known it as Add-olf.
The boy I knew had one parent from Mexico and one who was born in - iirc - Arizona. No German connections afaik.
Doesn't mean there weren't any, of course.
It just seemed odd to me to name a baby Adolf in the late 60s as WW11 was still very much in living memory 🤷‍♀️

Mielbee · 19/01/2024 16:01

Once came across a boy called Supreme. I forget his cultural background but was told it wasn't uncommon.

I taught in a couple of faith based schools in the UK and a lot of the children with African born parents had the most beautiful names like Mercy, Faith, Patience, Grace, Blessed ❤️

There was a weight lifter many years ago called Precious McKenzie (MacKenzie?). He was tiny - but terrifically strong.

Notallmilsarebad · 19/01/2024 16:02

Peter Pan. It was a little girl (a preschooler).

I was teaching English in China and the teachers weren’t great at choosing Western names for their pupils. There was another little girl called Frank 😂😂

I remember Precious McKenzie - in my memory, he was always breaking weight-lifting records on Blue Peter.

Ladybird

President Johnson's wife was called Ladybird - but your post did remind me that many years ago I met an American lady named "Cricket".

At school we had a Xanthe- never met anyone else with that name

We had one too @rogueone . North Yorkshire in the 80s?

I don't get embarrassed by random internet forums (shrug).

And the thread you quote is just a thread of people debating whether or not the name exists.

You can believe me or not - I didn't even know about the whole urban myth thing or that it was such a big deal (see my previous comments) - but I did meet a child with this name. There's a fairly good chance she was named after this as an urban myth, I've no idea.

Anyway, there's no way that I can prove any of this and I'm really not that invested anyway - believe what you like.

Edited

I’d be more embarrassed about making so much effort just to correct another poster . Let it go: she said she knows one and we don’t know she doesn’t.

No I was just saying I liked it in the context of Niamh vs neveah

A name isn’t random just because you haven’t come across them. It’s a bit offensive that names popular in other countries & cultures are considered random!

No it isn't.

If they become more popular here they will cease to be random, but at the moment that's what they are.

Computercalendar · 19/01/2024 16:07

There's somebody at work called Moreblessed and princess. I also
came across a little girl called renford which is just awful.

Underthesea65 · 19/01/2024 16:08

greentealeafy · 19/01/2024 12:34

Sadly I've seen that exact spelling before.

All the more tragic when it's supposed to be 'heaven' reversed!

I don't get it? Because it's not heaven spelt backwards

readsalotgirl63 · 19/01/2024 16:08

I was at school with people called Ignatius and Siobhan - also a Cornelius
