Ignatius. Still can't wrap my head around it.

Ignatius: I love it. Female form Ignatia which is quite popular when nuns take a name.

Don’t like Percy. Have met one and hope he doesn’t grow to be Pervy Percy.

Not a child ,but a lovely lady called Dimple Mistry who had been treated at the same hospital as the princess of Wales .Unusual name I felt

At school we had a Xanthe- never met anyone else with that name

I used to work with a Xanthe, in a shop in Edinburgh!

Maybe regional. Accent can make a big difference. I know people who have avoided a "-y" or "-ie" ending in Nottingham as they hate the local accent.

Ambrosia.

For a boy...

Shouldn’t it be Ambrosius for a boy (as in Ambrosius Aurelianus)? which actually sounds quite cool if you don’t focus on the anus ending too much.

Are they young Pearls or lots of ages?

A friend's daughter is called Pearl and she's in her mid 20d

CoalCraft · 19/01/2024 15:41

There's a Buzz (boy) and a Gypsy (girl) at my daughter's nursery.

Xtraincome · 19/01/2024 15:41

My fav obscure names: Ebenezer, Scout and Misty, Ladybird, Meadow- love them all tbh

MassiveOvaryaction · 19/01/2024 15:41

When dc1 was small at toddler group I was introduced to a new baby called "Casey". Asked how it was spelt (meaning ending in 'ie' or 'ey') because I was doing the register. Mum told me literally "KC" Hmm

I know a little Ianthe and it’s quite sweet on her.

Also an Annuciata.

But I’m going to have to pop off this thread because I actually think all the Ancient Greek and Latin type names are pretty cool. Not so fond of the obvious ones like Maximus or Julius.

rainydaysandwednesdays · 19/01/2024 15:43

Random

His name was actually random

TabbyM · 19/01/2024 15:43

What's wrong with Elspeth? Good Scottish name, I know a few of them.

I taught a child called Jellybean

Jellybean is adorable as a nickname - are you sure it wasn’t that? For passport, wedding vows etc … not so much : “ I, Jellybean, take thee …”

I don’t think that kind of name is fair. It has to be phonetically plausible to be a reasonable attempt.

Mercedes isn’t as bad as it sounds. The car was named after the name not the other way round . It’s like if they released a car called the Sylvia.
