Quite. I’m embarrassed for you @banjocat

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/3133353-La-a

I don't get embarrassed by random internet forums (shrug).

And the thread you quote is just a thread of people debating whether or not the name exists.

You can believe me or not - I didn't even know about the whole urban myth thing or that it was such a big deal (see my previous comments) - but I did meet a child with this name. There's a fairly good chance she was named after this as an urban myth, I've no idea.

Anyway, there's no way that I can prove any of this and I'm really not that invested anyway - believe what you like.

I think Venetia also attended the Royal Ballet school. I remember her as she had to decide between ballet or ponies.

That sounds like a conundrum that a Venetia would have!

She was a delight to teach tho’ some of the things she told me about the Royal ballet made me squirm.

Cameron & Gisselle!

Both are fairly popular - especially Cameron. Quite a traditional Scottish name....

AInightingale · 19/01/2024 14:44

Diesel and Pepsi-Leigh. I've also known Irish Catholic girls to be called Incarnita and Concepta and also a girl named Markievicz, after the Irish revolutionary countess.

I'll post these screenshots AGAIN for anyone who thinks La-A might have been born in Scotland, England or Wales. She wasn't.

To be fair, if it's like Darker Green website it only records names used 3 or more times cos I can't find my son's name on there. Bloody DH and his spelling.

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 19/01/2024 14:44

The La-a urban myth has been around so long now, that perhaps maybe someone thought 'actually I quite like that as a name'.

Obi. Father is a Star Wars fan.

His sister if a boy was going to be called Elvis but was called Elvi instead.

Lovely family and the names suit the children.

Elvi is/was a plus sized womens clothing chain!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 19/01/2024 14:46

@PurpleOrchid42 I went to university with a Loveday!

I also knew an extremely glamorous Venetia when I was a teenager. We were working at the same place over the summer and I was very intimidated by her.

Yonjovi · 19/01/2024 14:47

I met a kid called Jolly.
And a friend named their baby Blue.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 19/01/2024 14:47

Met a kid called Asbo once, though I'm not sure if it was legal or a nickname!

The La-a urban myth has been around so long now, that perhaps maybe someone thought 'actually I quite like that as a name'.

That's probably what happened.

I'm surprised people are getting so worked up about this and calling me a liar. I don't really mind, just stating my experience, people can believe or not.

I had no idea it would blow up this much or be so controversial (I just logged on to see 15 notifications from this thread!)- I didn't even know about the whole urban myth thing.

Leafy 😳I don't think I did a good job of hiding how I felt about it. I think it was because her other children didn't have 'out there' names.

Maybe cute on a baby but once you get past 4 years old it loses that for me.

The lead singer of Weezer is called River and his brother is called Leaves

NetZeroZealot · 19/01/2024 14:48

I also know a Jet, know several Venetias, and knew of a Loveday.

NotFastButFurious · 19/01/2024 14:49

Calypso and Caledonia (not related, I assume the latter's parents were Dougie McLean fans), both known as "Cally"

Droppit · 19/01/2024 14:49

God's Gift (female and might've been one word), kid called Barry, Horatio, Cosmo.

clarkkentsglasses · 19/01/2024 14:49

ruralwanderer · 19/01/2024 11:56

Ignatius. Still can't wrap my head around it.

I have a friend called Ignatius!

Zaranj · 19/01/2024 14:49

Rollo.

Whazzabanger · 19/01/2024 14:50

Marvel, Neon, Kok, Poko, a female Noah, Racer, Aero, - live in a arty type city and the choices seem to be super old fashioned names like Hazel and Violet or mad names to do with people’s hobbies/jobs or gender swap names - girls called John and boys called Rose - that kind of thing!

SemperIdem · 19/01/2024 14:50

A little girl named Rocky.

Ignatius. Still can't wrap my head around it.

I have a cousin named, "Ignacio", the Spanish form of "Ignatius".

It's a name heard all over Latin America and the most common nickname is "Nacho" which is the name of the guy who created the dish in Mexico.

Zaranj · 19/01/2024 14:51

clarkkentsglasses · 19/01/2024 14:49

I have a friend called Ignatius!

Same here. A Brazilian and a Spanish friend.

VincentVanGoth · 19/01/2024 14:51

Oh I just remembered a Coriolanus, but I don’t know if it counts though, as his name used to be Simon and he changed it by deed poll

JanewaysBun · 19/01/2024 14:52

My Grandma had something along the lines of "Peter " on her birth certificate. That's what happens when you sent a drunk man to register his daughter's birth in the 20s, she never officially changed it but used a normal feminine name that her mother had meant to have her.

Violahastings · 19/01/2024 14:52

Someone wrote in to Take A Break magazine saying her football-loving husband had named their baby daughter Lanesra, she thought it was just a unique sweet name but after a few months it clicked why he’d chosen it. No idea whether or not it was true but it made me laugh.
