Boaz

Anothenamechange · 19/01/2024 14:29

@Notallscumbags and yet we accept May and June for girls quite happily! Funny, isn't it. I think October would be rather a lovely name

I've recently had my second Deja-Vu, and I've also had a couple of Jet'aimes. I don't like names with apostrophes and accents in them, it is very inconvenient in a world where we type all the time, mostly for the child themselves. They are very common though

I’m sure I’ve heard this before 🤔🤔🤔🤪

Anyone remember Balonz?! (old gimmer klaxon)

Venetia is gorgeous!

It was the best thing about Saltburn!

Esmereldapawpatrol · 19/01/2024 14:33

Leafy 😳I don't think I did a good job of hiding how I felt about it. I think it was because her other children didn't have 'out there' names.

Maybe cute on a baby but once you get past 4 years old it loses that for me.

Sadly I've seen that exact spelling before.

All the more tragic when it's supposed to be 'heaven' reversed!

I don't understand why it's tragic?

TallulahBetty · 19/01/2024 14:24

That's cos the correct spelling is Nevaeh.

Yeah I think my dodgy spelling might be to blame for that!

wildernesssw · 19/01/2024 14:36

In some South African cultures the name is chosen to give meaning, in Xhosa
Sipho/Sisipho - gift (i.e. the child is a gift)
Thando/Noluthando - someone who is loving
Thembi - hope

etc and when it gets translated into English it seems unusual but is actually quite common.

My favorite was Yanela - enough - she was the last child of the family!

Sorry, apologies if I have offended anyone with this, I didn't know it was an urban myth, but I've just looked it up online and you're right.

But this is actually true and it was a white child.

No it’s not, no you didn’t, and no it wasn’t.

Bunnyhopskip · 19/01/2024 14:37

Slade, Cree, & Cove, are amongst some of the "creative" boys names in some clubs my kids go too.

wildernesssw · 19/01/2024 14:37

Venetia is old fashioned, but definitely has history. I knew one 20 years ago - in her 50s and upper class

Jetstream · 19/01/2024 14:38

Jet’s sister was Polly, their brothers had Welsh names, if I remember correctly.
I think Venetia also attended the Royal Ballet school. I remember her as she had to decide between ballet or ponies.
I also met a Eugenie, except her name was spelt very differently as she was south American.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/01/2024 14:39

There is a kid at DD's school called Ace.

Jb2182 · 19/01/2024 14:39

Met a little girl called Summer-Meadow. I also met two brothers called Xenophon (Xeno) and Zephaniah (Zeph). Lovely names and unusual!

LadyLapsang · 19/01/2024 14:40

Wolfie. I don’t think his parents were using Robert Lindsay as their cultural reference.

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 19/01/2024 14:40

That sounds like a conundrum that a Venetia would have!

Govangirl · 19/01/2024 14:40

During my NQT training, I had a Jephthah who was an absolutely gorgeous little boy, I think it’s Hebrew. Never seen it before and not seen it since! Pronounced Jeff-the.

I also had a Gertrude which is not especially uncommon, but she was only 11 and went by Gert.

Being in the highlands there were a few geographical names like Lewis, Harris, Skye, etc. but the one that’s really stuck with me is Mull. Not short for anything (Mullicent? Idk), just Mull. He had a sister called Isla (Isla Mull - Isle of Mull) Fair play to sticking to the theme I suppose 😂

Have come across an Obadiah called "Obi"! Weirdest I've met though has to be Cinderella.

Obadiah is a gorgeous name. I do have a friend who's little one is Obie, it's less odd one you like one I find

Whazzabanger · 19/01/2024 14:41

‘I met a child called La-a. With that spelling. Pronounced Ladasha.’

no you didn’t @banjocat
why do people feel the need to make this shite up?? Or spread urban myths????

I once had a neighbour called Loveday

I went to school with a girl called Loveday! It can only be the same person, surely?!

HollaHolla · 19/01/2024 14:43

I was at School with a Tuesday. My brother was at Uni with a Blue Rainbird (boy - parents had been hippies!)
I've seen a lot of Patience, Prayer, Heavenley, Blessings, as students from overseas, mainly.
I know someone who called their kid Deek (which is often a nickname for Derek, in Scotland). But that was their actual name. I always wondered what would have happened if Deek had gone on to be a High Court Judge or something!
