Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Whatever you do, not the one that sounds like misandry. I've scrolled down now, forgotten the name and just remember it sounds like misandry.

I like Helen and think Helena is even prettier. Or you might like Remy?

TheCurtainQueen · 12/12/2023 21:42

You need to stop the ridiculous spellings.

Christina is a name, Cristina is not.

It is if you are Spanish! Or Italian or Portuguese.

Totally normal spelling in much of Europe and South America.

Rosscameasdoody · 12/12/2023 21:58

Helen or Romy. Lisandry sounds like an illegal activity !!

WinterDeWinter · 12/12/2023 21:58

Do you mean Lysander?

Lysandry sounds like she's mixed up Lysander with misandry (hatred of men).

Romy is a lovely name.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/12/2023 22:00

Can I just check that you are naming a girl? (TBH my only pointer here is Helen)

Newbie1011 · 12/12/2023 22:01

Romy is the only one I like. I think that’s a lovely name
Dahlia is pretentious
Nova is a car
Bradleigh is beyond awful
Lisandry sounds like a villain from game of thrones
Paris and Dallas make me think of strippers

Olika · 12/12/2023 22:02

Personally I don't like any of the names. If you won't agree on the name before birth then perhaps you can wait until the baby is born and the name comes naturally.

CustardySergeant · 12/12/2023 22:02

noooooooo · Today 21:34
"I would say, and this may not please you, let she who runs the risk and destroys her pelvic floor, genitalia, and probably breasts, make the choice."

Why would you think that would not please the OP? She's the one who is pregnant!

LateNightReads · 12/12/2023 22:02

Another vote for Helena!

yetanotherdaytoday · 12/12/2023 22:03

Romy and Helen are lovely.

(I wasn't allowed Romy! But it's weird to say that now as I can't imagine 10yo DD by anything but her actual name).

I think you probably need to keep going till you find one you both like.

Didn't happen till after my babies were born! But we got there in the end.

RoachFish · 12/12/2023 22:03

How do you pronounce Romy? Like Roam-y or Rommy? I quite like Remi but I am not British and I don't know what works there.

Otherwise I'd definitely choose Dahlia.

ActDottie · 12/12/2023 22:04

Tbh both lists are awful… Bradleigh is the worst though! That spelling eughhh

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 22:04

A little tip for you once you have narrowed the list op. Go into Starbucks and try out the name. Anywhere anonymous. Try out the name. How do you feel saying it is your name, how do people react, can they say it properly.

Remember a name has got to carry them for life, so ideally suitable for all lifestages, whether as nicknames or full names.

Think about initials, popularity and ease. With a double barrel name (I know!) you end up forever spelling it so a phonetic name might be good.

You're right. To be honest, a short name would be ideal. Our family names are very typical think O'neal-Smith or Walsh-Brown, so , unless she goes in a non-English speaking country later, I am not too worried.

We'll just keep on looking.

I’m unsure if the OP is winding us all up as you’d struggle to come up with a more appalling set of options than the ones put forward.

I suspect your partner is relatively young as there is currently a huge difference between names given by younger parents vs older parents.

BlazingJune · 12/12/2023 22:05

Good grief.

Half of those are not even 'names' - they are just made-up spellings.

Bradleigh? No such word.

Paris? Dallas? Who the heck uses names of cities?

Neva? Is that a name?

Is your child a boy or a girl?

Museum10665 · 12/12/2023 22:05
  • Dallas
for me
VanityDiesHard · 12/12/2023 22:05

Lisandry!!! She cannot be serious.

Oooolala · 12/12/2023 22:05
  • Bradleigh ( her favourite) - Brad is ok
  • Dallas - who shot JR?
  • Paris - ugh
  • Lisandry - sounds like a mix of lice and laundry
  • Helen - truly magnificent: my own name so I'm biased.

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it) - nice
  • Dahlia - reminds me of Dalai Lama
  • Neva - sounds too much like nevus (as in skin mole)
Noodlehen · 12/12/2023 22:06

sorry, Those names are all a tragedeigh. Poor kid.

Yesiwastalkingtoyou · 12/12/2023 22:07

Honestly, yours are just as bad as hers. No names on either list are nice

Newbie1011 · 12/12/2023 22:07

Just seen your later post. Definitely Romy or Emma - both gorgeous

EarthSight · 12/12/2023 22:07

Lola isn't traditional, but the other ones on your most recent posts are fine.

If in doubt, imagine what it would be like if someone said 'I'd like to introduce you to my lawyer / accountant, 'insert name'.

BlazingJune · 12/12/2023 22:08

Is your partner literate? Seriously,

Doesn't she mean Lysander? (Character in a play.)

EarthSight · 12/12/2023 22:08

VanityDiesHard · 12/12/2023 22:05

Lisandry!!! She cannot be serious.

I know....is it made up I wonder? Sounds like misandry, or some kind of disease.

TheWanderingWoman · 12/12/2023 22:08

I like Romy but the rest I'm not keen on at all.
