Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

So you have found 5 names you're both happy with? That's pretty fair going. You're only 5 months in.

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 21:39

She is not pregnant, I am. But we want 2 children, so she will be the next one to be "pushing the watermelon out".

We are two women, if that wasn't clear. So I don't understand why you are talking about last names? There's no hetero dynamic here.

The baby will have both of our names.

It was clear, BTW. I was just ADHD reading... skim skim, get distracted, skim, zone out, opine.

TicTacNicNak · 12/12/2023 21:42

Ugh!

Romy is lovely but very popular now I believe

Helen is ok but personally prefer Helena, or Eleanor

All the others are awful, especially Bradleigh which is dire.

How are you pronouncing Neva? I guarantee it will get pronounced Never.

Im wondering why you gave up on Emma if you both liked it. It's a beautiful name.

ChanelNo19EDT · 12/12/2023 21:43

Wow, where to start! I'll start with the worst.

Bradleigh is terrible. But just Leigh is OK.
Hate Dallas and Paris but suggest Lois

trying to find overlap between yr taste and hers, ehat about Bellamy which has something in common with Bradleigh and Romy?

Neva is terrible too. You're not off the hook here!! What about Maeve?

Dahlia is a bit fancy compared to other choices. Della or Delia are both easier to say.

OpenLanes · 12/12/2023 21:44

You both seem to like slightly unusual names. I'd suggest going onto a "due date" Facebook group and asking everyone to list name suggestions. Usually those threads get hundreds of suggestions, and you might come across one you both haven't thought of but like.

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/12/2023 21:44

Helen and Emma are okay (bit dull) as is Romy.
I love Dahlia and quite like Lorena.

The rest are awful.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/12/2023 21:44

All awful, Helen marginally less awful (although I do like Helena).
Bradleigh is just too bad for words.

Blessedbethefruitz · 12/12/2023 21:45

Romy is sweet. Helen and Dahlia are acceptable enough, down to taste. I won't comment on the rest, pp have done that for me!

There are loads of excellent Greek names if that's what you're into - Thea, Calliope, etc. Indiana obviously excellent for a boy if you're looking for place names, but i assume you know it's a girl at 5 months?

Me and dp had very different tastes. I loved the E names that are so popular atm, elsa, evie, effie, etc for our second, our dd. He did not! We separately looked at a top 1,000 names list and picked our top 5 to see if we had anything in common. I was surprised with ds that we had 3 in common, and we both had the same top name shortening for dd - I picked a more formal version as her full name.

Please do not name your child Neva.

Also Lola is beautiful and underused imo, only ever known one. Though you do risk the songs (depending on how you feel about that).

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 21:45

Emmeline is a more unusual take if you both like Emma.

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 21:46

I guess we both are horrible at names. Thank you for your honesty ( which made us smile and laugh)

Emma is lovely! Job done!

Sodndashitall · 12/12/2023 21:47

Not a fan of cities as names. Also Bradleigh is a pita to spell. Do you want DD to be spelling their name out evey single time they call a service ?
Lisandry sounds like an illness I'm afraid !

If she doesn't like your names then I'd suggest you need to keep looking !

GorgonzolaSouffle · 12/12/2023 21:48

Helen is awful too.

maybe someone else should name your child 😂😂😂

hotsouple · 12/12/2023 21:49

tragedeigh

fedupwithbeinghot · 12/12/2023 21:49

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 21:36

Previously to this, the only ones we both agreed on was Emma, Cristina and Lorena.

Those were nice!

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 21:50

@hotsouple Looking forward seeing your post on reddit.

Yes, Lisandry rhymes with misandry!

I suggest Lindsay. Wildcard but who knows?

Inyourwildestdreams · 12/12/2023 21:50

@Demainsdeslaube When DH and I were stuck on names, someone suggested the “Kinder” app to us. You each download it and link to each other. It suggests names and you each swipe yes/no. Any you match yes on will go into a combined list 😊😂 It gave DH and I a starting point (and a laugh at some names it suggested! 😂).

Could be worth a look 😊

PurBal · 12/12/2023 21:51

Love Helen. Romy is okay.

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 21:51

A little tip for you once you have narrowed the list op. Go into Starbucks and try out the name. Anywhere anonymous. Try out the name. How do you feel saying it is your name, how do people react, can they say it properly.

Remember a name has got to carry them for life, so ideally suitable for all lifestages, whether as nicknames or full names.

Think about initials, popularity and ease. With a double barrel name (I know!) you end up forever spelling it so a phonetic name might be good.

Mottledgrey · 12/12/2023 21:52

I named my son Dallas so I’m probably biased on that one. He’s also the coolest 2 year old!

I do prefer it as a boys name though.

makeminealargeoneagain · 12/12/2023 21:53

Hi OP, from all the names on your list think Helen or Emma are ok. Some of the others sound a bit made up.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/12/2023 21:53

They're all fucking dreadful.

UsingChangeofName · 12/12/2023 21:54

Yeah, I'm afraid I think all of your wife's choice, with the exception of Helen, are awful. However, all of yours are awful too.

I mean, I'm no fan of the name Bradley, but it's not so bad when spelled Bradley. Bradleigh is beyond awful.

Emma is nice (from you later post).

StillWantingADog · 12/12/2023 21:55

Almost all awful, especially Bradleigh

Romy is nice
Helen is ok but a bit dull and dated IMO
