Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

I know 3 Rebecca Louise's and every girl at school in my day either had Louise or Marie as a middle name.

A lot of posters have missed that op's wife is French, which explains a lot. And there is now a nicer updated list of potential names as well.

You can’t possibly both have such appalling taste surely?! You’ve both come up with names that you couldn’t possibly contemplate bestowing on a child, even for spite!

OhsoNat · 17/12/2023 00:12

It’s often hard to agree but you’ll get there in the end just keep looking
its quite a wide selection ,like Paris and Helen are totally different names so I can’t really see a certain style she’s going for so I’m sure you’ll find something
i do quite like Paris but prefer for a boy, Romy is ok as well

SydneyMamma · 17/12/2023 02:49

All terrible names. Please rethink your choices and come up with a better list.

Oddly enough, Paris and Helen come from the same canon IF Paris is used as a boy's name. It wouldn't be a suitable name for a brother and sister, however, as the characters in the classics were in a sexual relationship.

I think Helen is old fashioned, sorry to all the Helens out there. All the other names aren't great either, just my opinion.

Edited

I've seen so many posts saying the same about Helen and yet suggestions of names like Maud or Edith and so on.

When names come back again, someone has to start the trend. One of my GCs has a name that is very 50s to my ear, but they've made it their own.

Yes- Helen seems to me fairly timeless; whereas Maud sounds very older-generation to me. Perhaps I'm biased, as it was my grandmother's name!

It’s better not to saddle kids with made up spellings imo, it looks slightly illiterate, quite apart from the offence it causes the Irish to anglicise names.

It isn’t made up spelling of anything because there is no official book of names, no one owns them, there is no name police (though you like to think you are).
It is phonetically correct in the English language. Letters put together to make a sound. It is not owned by the Irish. If someone is offended by the spelling of a name, I think they have much wider issues in life.

In the UK there's no official book of names, there are in some countries. Try moving to Scandinavia - many of the countries there have restrictions on name choices, including no surnames used as first names and you must be able to tell the child's sex from their name.

I love Romy. Helen is nice. Not a fan of the others.

Thinking along those lines/sounds… Mila? Melanie? Eleanor? Nell? Leonie? Lyra?

We finally found a name we both like. Thank you everyone!

Congratulations. Am hoping its a French feminine name and not a made up one though. 😅

JayJayj · 20/12/2023 11:03

… methinks OP is unlikely to divulge the final choice after the candid opinion fest on their first cut!

Agree & great to hear OP has found an agreeable name. As far as Romy is concerned, I honestly can't understand the popularity here & apologies to anyone called this. 🤦‍♀️
