Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

It is not easy to choose a name. Someone said a long name can be shortened, and so it can, but a long name on a birth certificate entitles you to use that name when you are grown, and not suffer the short versions people give you.

My name is Elizabeth. I went through my childhood being called Betty, which I hated. As soon as I left school I called myself Elizabeth, and I felt a new person, with more courage. Only my immediate family calls me that, and they know I don't like it, but my courage showed me I can pass it by and not bother. Now it is Lizzie and it suits my years, and is easy on the ears. It has a sort of softness that Betty never had.

I'm with you on this.

Liz or Lizzie are somehow sharp and elegant abbreviations of Elizabeth. Personally I feel there's a sort of "squashiness" about Betty (or worse, Bessie) that I can't bear. Not keen on Beth, either, but I don't know why.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2023 21:28

The only reasonable name is Helen. I quite like it

Lisandry - is that a name or a typo

Your list is no better than hers. All absolutely dire.

This, thousands of names, choose something lovely instead of something to be quirky.

HAF1119 · 16/12/2023 07:18

Helena and Maeve are both lovely names so you're getting there!

Random ideas
Brianna
Romalie
Rose

Can't anyone read properly!? It is the name EdEIGH that is dire! NOT 'Edie'. I really made that extremely clear. People on this site are so keen to be outraged that they lose all ability to understand the most basic points.

Then you mean spelling, not name, surely? I am assuming they are pronounced the same?

swearsbytalk · 16/12/2023 07:37

VanityDiesHard · 15/12/2023 19:34

If the name 'suits her perfectly' then I never want to meet her. A more ghastly, dire, chavvy name I have never heard.

You sound prejudiced.

Does this mean you have to know how someone's name is spelled before you agree to meet them?!😂

Jack80 · 16/12/2023 08:13

It's Bradleigh, Romy or Helen for me

Mumto2kids86 · 16/12/2023 08:36

I have Neva seen such a bad list of names. All awful. Sorry 🤣

Shihtzulover · 16/12/2023 09:03

Yes I can confirm, they are awful

@Leila7654321

Yes, I am. That's why I don't get the poster who says Christina is the only correct version. If we went back home, there are only Cristinas. Christina looks to me like it should be pronounced Christi Tina.

Why would it be Christi Tina just because there’s an h?

Calismom · 16/12/2023 09:22

Have you tried Kinder or similar baby name app. Swipe right on the ones you like, if your wife does the same then it’s a match, and you choose from that list.

twelvexii · 16/12/2023 09:24

Whatever you choose for heavens sake make it easily pronounceable and spell it correctly otherwise you are just subjecting your child to years of torture. Imagine 5 times a day having to constantly correct teachers/cover teachers/staff/employers/colleagues whilst the rest of the class giggle.....she will only be defined by her weird name. Nothing else will matter .

Sorry but they’re all awful!

SwimMum26 · 16/12/2023 11:22

Sorry but they are all awful…but each to their own! Good luck.

StrikeItMucky · 16/12/2023 11:39

Your poor child! As pp's have said, both choices are terrible, with the exception of Helen (which is a bit vanilla!)
Scrap the name Emma too. I'm an Emma and I think it's a really drab and common name. It always seems to be paired with "Louise", as the middle name for some reason! 🫤
(Except me, I have a very unusual middle name).

Oh dear, I think Emma & Louise are both classically beautiful names as are the people I know called this. A matter of taste I suppose 😁

NameChange30 · 16/12/2023 11:53

Emma is popular for a reason, it's lovely.

What a weird post. I have literally never met an 'Emma Louise'. My middle name is Emma but I often wish that my father's wish for me to have it as my first had prevailed. Classic names are classic for a reason, I don't get people that call them 'dull'. People calling classic names dull is what has got us all the little Bratleigh and Chavleighs.

thebestinterest · 16/12/2023 13:05

Ouffff! This brings back baddd memories of when I was pregnant 😂😫

The trick is to brainstorm and write down every possible name you can tolerate, both of you, and no one gets to scratch off anything just yet.

You both have veto powers.

I hated every suggestion my DH suggested (and often told him so, even though that was not the best tactic with him), and he wasn’t hot on any of mine, often mocking them (😂).

The good news is that one night, whilst sitting on the couch, DH suggested a name I had never considered (I can say now that I was so caught up
in wanting my baby to have a name no one I knew had, that I hadn’t realized how much I loved this new name), and honestly, my heart softened a bit. His name suggestions moved from “are you insane” to “maybe” and “yeah, I can do that”

With my name suggestion, he didn’t love it but liked it enough.

I had to compromise as did he. Also, we didn’t name her until 5 days after she was born, so my advice is to not let ANYONE rush you with that. Feel both your name suggestions for a few days. She’ll name herself.

In re to your choices:

I actually know a Neva (spelled Niva) and I think that’s pretty. Helen is also good. So I think these two names should move to the next round.

Don’t scratch out any names yet though, whatever you do. It’s possible others will grow on you.

By the way, my daughter IS SO the name her father chose (it’s what she goes by) and we both absolutely love both her names 15 months in ♥️

Good luck and congrats!!!

So put these names back on the list as well.

OP, I’m sure you would do it anyway, but do read about the background to the name before you choose.
This site us very good and reliable:
Behind The Name

I second using Behind The Name as it is a very good site for the meaning and etymology of names. It also has the random renamer feature if you are struggling for ideas.

Sometimes generational, Emma Louise was a common 70s combination so for some very bland (at best).

StrikeItMucky · 16/12/2023 14:26

@VanityDiesHard Not a weird post at all! I grew up with a lot of people who were also named Emma and the vast majority of them had the middle name Louise.
Just because you've never met an 'Emma Louise' doesn't make my post weird. Nor does it invalidate my opinion that my 1st name, Emma, is drab.
And rest assured my children don't have chavy, whacky names, just because I think my "classic" name is drab.
What a weird response! 🫤

StockpotSoup · 16/12/2023 14:48

As someone who grew up in the eighties, I can confidently say that if someone of my age asked me to guess their middle name, Louise and Victoria would be my first two guesses.
