So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

btw i forgot about clementia. you said you wanted other names you could use clem for. i can only think of terese or teresa that tessa could be shortened from.

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 19:50

see i can make it work if its lee-nay-ah but not just ne lol.

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 20:08

ska - sorry should have been more specific. what i meant was is it eye-ness oh in-ness?

catstar · 15/03/2008 20:21

I know an Alisa - a really pretty name. My niece is Anna which I also love.

I'm trying to promote my DD's name - have never heard of any others but I love it: Orlena. It's old French and it means Golden.

Keep an open mind until the birth - we were set on Georgina, but when we met dd, it seemed too harsh. We went back to the book for 3 days before finding Orlena!

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 20:33

orlanda is nice.

WilkieBarEasterEgg · 15/03/2008 20:35

I like Alice from you list.

What about Mia?

VintageGardenia · 15/03/2008 20:43

I love Alice, DP won't have it. And a good friend of his has just announced a dd Louisa! So that's off (I mean I know we could too, really, but I don't think we will).

Mia I like, Linnea I am now liking. Told DP about Chance too and I then had to suffer many hilarious jokes about how Chance would be a fine thing, etc, etc.

VintageGardenia · 15/03/2008 20:44

Oooo the Easter names are coming out!

No19 · 15/03/2008 20:49

Mmmm for Clementia, and Alice still one of my favourites. I have never heard of Orlena, but am interested in old French names. I knew an Oriel once and always thought it pretty.

Alice
Clem (...)
Tess (a) (...)
Linnea I do like, hands off everyone else!
Louisa
Eloise

I also liked Emilia, but thought it might get confused with Amelia. Orlanda is good! I had Orlando on the list of names for DS (DH vetoed it, obviously - along with (yes)Aloysius. I ended up with Felix, which was my favourite!)

BTW, I had a friend at school called Hester, and she shortened her name to Tessa (well, not exactly shortened, now I think of it - but used it as an alternative!)

No19 · 15/03/2008 20:50

We have a Lia in the family which might be too similar to Mia. A pity because I also once knew a lovely Swede called Pia whose name I would ALSO like!

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 20:53

hester and pia are lovely.

QuintessentialShadows · 16/03/2008 09:47

Clementia is lovely, makes me think of Chlamydia though...

Esmeralda?

No19 · 16/03/2008 11:07

Lol QShadows it's a shame because I think Candida is an absolutely beautiful name but one could NEVER!

OP posts:
QuintessentialShadows · 16/03/2008 11:15

oh I remember there was this actress, Candice Bergen. Could Candice be an alternative?

Esmeralda can shorten to Esme.

Theresa could be a middle name, so you could still call her Tessa or Tessie for short.

I think Elizabeth could be Tessa too, with some imagination....

No19 · 16/03/2008 11:36

I would love to have Elizabeth but have niece.

I was thinking about Shakespeare this morning as I pulled up the coltsfoot.

Miranda?
Cordelia?
Cressida?

I can just see the bad-smell look passing across DP's face as I mention any of these. In fact he said to me this morning, "Just by saying names to me in a breathy voice doesn't disguise the fact that they are HIDEOUS!"

Meg?

OP posts:
QuintessentialShadows · 16/03/2008 12:47

I love Cordelia.

I also like Melody, Melanie, Julia, Anette, Christine, Maya, Charlotte.

Safe to say I like a lot of names, and never had a girl...

MadameCh0let · 16/03/2008 21:33

Instead of Sophie why does nobody pick Sylvie, and instead of Isabel, why does nobody pick Annabel?
I do really wonder this when I can't throw a stone without hitting and Isabel or a Sophie, lovely names though they are.

Thea and Alice are both beautiful btw.

No19 · 16/03/2008 21:41

Madame you are a sensible Womble. Thinking of organising email campaign pro-Alice for DP so will round you all up again for that!

It's so hard. With boys' names we chatted for about 20 mins, agreed on 3 names and left it at that! Girls' names are much more fun though.

blushingm · 16/03/2008 22:18

i'm Alice - i like it now but hated it when i was growing up

i have Erin but I like Erinna. i also love Ariadne

nellyraggbagg · 17/03/2008 15:31

I'll join the pro-Alice campaign! (Cordelia is also good, though).

GreatGooglyMoogly · 17/03/2008 16:04

Greta?

No19 · 17/03/2008 16:16

We are making babysteps of progress on the Alice front. Let's just say I'm giving in on a lot of other fronts! Why did you hate it blushingm I wouldn't have thought it had a lot of bad connotations?

I hated my name when a child but because it was long, unusual, needed spelling and was ALWAYS misheard for the male version of it. I love it now. Tis still unusual enough, too.

stuffedolivia · 17/03/2008 18:33

Alice is lovely, but I know at least 8 of them who are under the age of 12 - a bit like Sophie and Isabel really...
Given the other names you like, have you considered any of these? -
Ella
Elsa
Ailsa(as opposed to Alisa)
Eva
Ava...or even Aurelia - or is that in the Flavia category?
btw I really wanted to call DD Augusta, but DH refused point blank!

newjerseychick · 17/03/2008 18:49

I like Tia and melody is lovely. I have a Kya-Summer
Ax
