So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

There was a very nice and sexy Italian girl at school with me who was called Livia - I suppose that's my main association .

No19 · 14/03/2008 14:33

What am I talking about I completely forgot Anna Livia from Finnegan's Wake. So actually there is a lovely Irish connection with Livia.

Hmm... ponder this one.

"marJArine versus marGArine" - what was the conclusion?

HowlingCow · 14/03/2008 17:06

My niece is Nia - a Welsh name. My DD1 is Ffion another Welsh name that means foxglove, DD2 has Llinos as middle name which means Linnet but you have to have an umbrella up when non-welsh speakers say that one!!

nappyaddict · 14/03/2008 23:52

valda? sharla? cyrilla?

nappyaddict · 14/03/2008 23:55

clementina?

NutterlyUts · 14/03/2008 23:55

I quite like Julia-Anne as a name. Went to school with one who was beautiful, elegant, brainy and lovely to be around, so v v positive connotations, and grown up enough to work on someone like a top lawyer I think, as well as cute enough to work on a small child.

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 00:02

regina, luigina, luigia, carmelita, julianna.

nappyaddict · 15/03/2008 00:53

talulla or lula?

mezzer · 15/03/2008 01:18

Some that were are the top of my list but many got rejected by dh:

Clara
Julia
Sierra (I LOVE but thought maybe too hippy-ish...)
Carla
Anya
Lea
Liana

No19 · 15/03/2008 13:16

I have to admit I really don't like Tallulah, though Lula / Lulu I can see being fun.

DP is currently considering Tessa and pushing Rebecca. I do like Rebecca but it's a teeeeeny bit boring. He won't go near Constance or any of my other faves. Also lots we can't have because a friend or family member has bagsed it.

Of new suggestions I like Anya, Clara (vv) and am rofling at Chance! Your poor baby would never be in any doubt about having been an accident!

Re. Marge my understanding is that a hard g was the original & correct pronunciation (though have never heard ANYONE except my v correct grandmother use it) but the soft g is pretty much universal now. I don't know what the etymology is.

ines= iness or if you are spanish ineth (but probably much nicer in a real spanish accent) -its agnes isnt it?

QuintessentialShadows · 15/03/2008 18:44

May I suggest Linnea? There is no prettier name for a little girl. Tender, feminie, and sheer, at the flower that carries its name....

QuintessentialShadows · 15/03/2008 18:45

as the flower, not "at". I cant type.

No19 · 15/03/2008 18:53

I haven't heard of Linnea, ever, and it is very pretty. It reminds me of Linnaeus - presume fem of same - wasn't he a botanical type? Sorry - am not sciencey.

Linnea - pron lin-ay-a or lin-ee-a? Lin-ay-a nicer, not like linear.

I bet DP will think it too weird.

Sorry I know I've already asked this but I'd love another name (other than Theresa / Therese) that Tessa would be an abbreviation of (sorry lousy sentence). I like Tessa (quite) and DP really likes it but I am very in favour of giving full names.

using the english pronunciation i think it is li-nay-ah but it is a swedish name and i know it has an accent on the e so is probably pronounced differently to how we would say it. on a name website it says lee-ne-ah but can't quite work that one out in my head. doesn't sound right.

QuintessentialShadows · 15/03/2008 19:48

Linnea

Lee
Ne like in necessary
Ah

But who says you cant pronounce it in a more british fashion?
