Honey?

Just curious of opinions, as its the only name me and DH both seem to like.

No, definitely not. Honey is a pet name, as in ‘oh honey are you ok’ not a real name.

Know a lovely golden retriever called Honey but certainly not for a child!

I think of it as very 1950s American. Is that a good or bad thing? Not sure!

Don’t tell anyone irl. Just introduce Honey to the world. People are less likely to be critical of a name once it’s already been given.

The problem with Honey is its a bit diminutive when said to a girl. Like the dismissive 'Hi Honey, can you get me a drink,'... something you'd say when someone wasn't important enough to learn their actual name.

And then the whole MLM Hun thing.

I think I would find it hard to imagine having a boss with this name.

I know mine and DH opinion is all that matters. But I do worry about how other children will treat my child etc because of a name.. I do think its lovely. I also like that it isnt very common, but maybe thats for a reason

Also think about nicknames - the only ones I can think of from Honey are things like Hon which would come off quite patronising when she’s older

Just try to imagine her a grownup with smirking male colleagues saying 'hello Honey'. It's a Bond Girl name, I suppose Honey wasn't quite as bad as Pussy...

It is not a name to me. It is sweet as a pet name, but it is not the name of a classy woman, or of a professional woman, or any kind of powerful woman that I can imagine. Though, maybe that says more about me and my inner prejudices than it does the name.

Would the name Honour tap into something similar?

I sort of like the way Honey looks and sounds, and that it is unusual. However, it feels awfully diminutive in a way that is actually... a bit sexist maybe? Like calling your daughter Baby or Sweetie, or even Dolly (come across this one, don't like it for this reason). I feel that as a grown woman your daughter might not need or want her name to be another reason she is dismissed or patronised.

That said, in fairness, somewhat cutesy babyish names are also pretty trendy for boys right now. Eg Beau, Alfie. And slightly "unusual" cutesy names being as trendy as they are right now, probably Honey wouldn't stand out that much? I certainly don't see it being a problem at school.

And having worked with a senior person called Dolly actually and though I don't like the name it never caused me to treat her differently or view her without respect. It's more that I wouldn't feel that kind of a name would be a good fit for myself - as a professional and capable person I would feel saddled if I had a silly babyish name. But perhaps your daughter would love her name and not feel that way? And wouldn't be so alone among a tide of similar aged adults with "babyish" names.

There is a Honey in DC's school, I thought it unusual at first but now it's just a normal name to me. The DC have never thought it strange.
