Honey?

Just curious of opinions, as its the only name me and DH both seem to like.

No, I think you’d be putting an extra hurdle in place for her once she’s an adult and wants to be taken seriously. It feels like you’ve already condemned her to being a ‘foolish little woman’.

You could pick a name beginning with H and just use Honey as a nickname at home perhaps?

Also, look up Honey Boo Boo - it might put you off the name.

Perhaps sweet for a little girl but you have to think of the adult woman she'll become. It sounds a bit porn name for an adult woman.

I worked with a woman who named her child Honey. The child is now a 22 year old woman and has had no problems with her name whatsoever.
She has a good job in the NHS, had no problems in school and nobody has had any issue with the name.
OP mumsnet will always throw around the bollocks about how your baby will never be taken seriously in the working world due to whatever name you like, believe me they're talking shite. Honey is a gorgeous name and if you and your DH love it then go for it. For what it's worth I love Dolly too as in Parton- one of the strongest and most admirable female role models around.

Again stereotypical but it strikes me as a 'girly' name and that may or may not suit the character of your child.

You ok? That was quite a big reaction. Given people have been quite blunt in their opinion about the name I'm not sure why me being blunt in my response is somehow triggering you but you do you.

it is not the name of a classy woman, or of a professional woman, or any kind of powerful woman that I can imagine. Though, maybe that says more about me and my inner prejudices than it does the name.

Absolutely this! Women have enough obstacles in their lives without saddling them with a name that sounds like a sex-worker.

I fear it would be a name that would make it (even) harder to be taken seriously as a grown up professional woman.

Sorry, my first impression is stripper's stage name, but I'm old and boring. I personally wouldn't give a child either a pet's or a stripper name as a first name. I think it's okay to use it as a middle name though.

I grew up reading the Trixie Belden books, and her best friend was Honey Wheeler. I love the name Honey.

Versatile. Now Honey could do all those things but people would WTF in many of them. You can say that your friend works in the NHS with that name but you could say that about literally any name. Baby Names is to know what people think.

And what I think is that isn't a name for a grown-up effective woman. It's a baby name or rabbits and rats it seems.

No. Sorry but it’s very twee and she won’t be taken seriously in life. I would have hated to face school, Uni, work with that name. Also it would lay the groundwork for leches everywhere to approach her with cheesy chat up lines from mid teens onwards.

My mum had a friend called Honey when I was growing up. She was a kind but stern lady. I don’t think she had any trouble being taken seriously. She always had nice cake at her house. Overall, I like the name, it has a warm familiar feel, and in my mind a hint of steely sting 🐝

The thing is though, my mind doesn't jump to Honey being a doctor in the NHS. I think more of admin or etc. Not that there's anything wrong with those roles at all, but if the daughter ever aspires to more high powered positions in life, Honey may become a source of prejudice.

I think it's such a lovely sweet feminine name for a little girl btw, and I low key love it. But maybe as an older child and professional woman, a name leading to less stereotyping might be more appropriate.

I would say the same for any overtly masculine/cowboy name too, like naming your son Macho or something.

Bloody awful. By all means can be a nickname, but it's a really bad name to lump on a kid- and then an adult.
