Very unique girl name (named after a holiday) ❤️ Will she be bullied? Is it cheesy?

My husband and I are due with our first child, a baby girl, at the end of February. I'll likely be induced 2 weeks early due to blood pressure which would fall exactly on Valentine's Day.

We have decided to call her our little lovebug.....

Ivy-Valentine🩷🎀❤️

Valentine pronounced just like the holiday!

It will be a double-barreled first name, but she will probably go by either Ivy or Valentine since it's long. We love having both names included in her first name. A lot of people have been saying to just make it her first and middle name, but we aren't worried about it since most people will call her one or the other and she will have options like I never had.

What are your thoughts?? Do you think she might be bullied around Valentine's Day since it is the holiday of love? Kids can be mean at that age! We are set on the name completely but any opinions are welcome. She will probably be wearing a lot of heart themed clothing and pink and red until she tells me she wants otherwise hehe, is it cheesy 🙈 I love names that have a story relating to the child's birth. Even if she isn't born on Valentine's Day it'll still be close enough so it works for us.

I love the name Valentine. It’s traditionally a boy’s name but I don’t think that matters.

As a woman cursed with a traditionally male name, yes it really really matters.

dayofcheese · 03/10/2023 22:31

She will probably be wearing a lot of heart themed clothing why would you do that. She's not a doll. This is going to be a grown woman one day. Not an Instagram prop.

Ivy is a beautiful name for a beautiful a baby, a young girl, a young woman and a woman.

ors timeless. Leave valentines for a middle name. I can tell by your post yourself and DH are so excited for this LO to come and she will be so so loved and cherished. It’s lovely to read

This comment really warmed my heart! Thank you, we are so excited and I can't wait to give her the mother-daughter relationship I never got to have

It's fine. I already know a little girl with 'Valentina' as her middle name - it's quite cute. It's no more reason for being teased than any other name. It's not really an unusual name, especially as 'Ivy' is so common (in the 'seen frequently' sense of the word.

I like the Ivy part, but not the Valentine part for a girl. I've always known Valentine to be a boy's name. My relative is a male and has that name. Another relative is female and is called Valentina!
Congratulations and wishing you the easiest delivery 💚

I'm not so keen on how she would be called ivy (some people will inevitably drop the second part) and her name initials would also be I-V. Sounds exactly the same aloud...

I actually think this is super cool that her initials sound the same as her first name! I'm a word nerd though and I love plays on words

Two separate names. No hyphen.

Ivy Valentine

Humbugg · 03/10/2023 22:33

Think how long it will be filling forms in or writing her name on schoolwork. Use one as first name and one as middle name

CancertheCrab · 03/10/2023 22:35

I agree Valentine is a boy's name

Tighginn · 03/10/2023 22:35

Think the op meant to post this on netmums.

Valentines Day in the US is huge, my friend is from Philly and she moved here just before reception. When her DD started school she brought in loads of things for Valentines Day including cards heart shaped lollies and was shocked we didn't do anything for it, even as adults.

I think the name is lovely and it has a special meaning for you. You can't live by what other people may or may not tease, as you have seen from this thread lots love it, lots don't like it. But you do so go with that. Kids will find anything to pick on, you just have to raise a child who can be unbothered by dickheads commenting on anything about them.

Mywingshurt · 03/10/2023 22:36

I think it's fine as long as you don't insist on people using both names constantly. One or the other seems fair. Kids know as much as they grow up with, the name won't seem odd to her friends who she grows up with. Regardless, if you raise her to be proud of her name she can shake off any potential teasing anyway.

strawberryandcreams · 03/10/2023 22:39

I love it OP

When you said she was going to be named after a holiday, I thought you were planning on calling her Mykonos or Ibiza

Same here!
I was thinking ''Is Valentine a destination?''

''Valenti'' {Surname} was a naughty boy at our school.

Handsome though.

DappledThings · 03/10/2023 22:42

DS was born on Valentine's Day. Midwife asked if that was going to be his middle name. I laughed as I thought she had to be joking and nobody would actually be so twee but she was serious.

It would be bad enough for a boy, even worse for a girl given it's a boy's name.

And uniqueness is binary. Something is unique or not. There is no such thing as very unique.

I have to say that the I-V makes me think of an IV drip.

I think only one poster has picked up on this so far. It reads like you're planning to treat your daughter like a toy or accessory. Don't 'theme' your child, please!

ilovesushi · 03/10/2023 22:46

It is very pretty.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 03/10/2023 22:47

I've looked at American online dictionaries and they still say a holiday is 'a day when most people do not go to work or school, especially because of a religious or national celebration' (pedantic)

user1492757084 · 03/10/2023 22:47

Ivy Valentine I would have as two names...
Otherwise
Ivy Valentina is niceer.

MysteryBelle · 03/10/2023 22:47

I love it! Very beautiful, I love both names and I love them together. Congratulations!!

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/10/2023 22:48

I personally agree that Valentina would be much better.

What bothers me is the fact that seem to want to "theme" a baby! Why have her clothes all got to have hearts and stuff on it? She is a kid not a build-a-bear.

MariePaperRoses · 03/10/2023 22:49

Ivy as a first name and Valentine as a middle name is lovely.

As a double barrelled name it conjures up a tap dancing child actress from yesteryear called Baby Jane Hudson -

Gigi70 · 03/10/2023 22:52

Congratulations OP. I’m not sure about the two vs in each name in quick succession…

Valentina is one of my all time favourites though and one we considered.

Ivy is also so pretty but popular after Beyonce named her daughter Blue-Ivy perhaps! Something to consider if that bothers you.

I’d go for Valentina Ivy Surname if not a different middle name without a v.
