Very unique girl name (named after a holiday) ❤️ Will she be bullied? Is it cheesy?

My husband and I are due with our first child, a baby girl, at the end of February. I'll likely be induced 2 weeks early due to blood pressure which would fall exactly on Valentine's Day.

We have decided to call her our little lovebug.....

Ivy-Valentine🩷🎀❤️

Valentine pronounced just like the holiday!

It will be a double-barreled first name, but she will probably go by either Ivy or Valentine since it's long. We love having both names included in her first name. A lot of people have been saying to just make it her first and middle name, but we aren't worried about it since most people will call her one or the other and she will have options like I never had.

What are your thoughts?? Do you think she might be bullied around Valentine's Day since it is the holiday of love? Kids can be mean at that age! We are set on the name completely but any opinions are welcome. She will probably be wearing a lot of heart themed clothing and pink and red until she tells me she wants otherwise hehe, is it cheesy 🙈 I love names that have a story relating to the child's birth. Even if she isn't born on Valentine's Day it'll still be close enough so it works for us.

Hmm, main issue is she’ll likely be born on 15th or 16th. Cute as a middle name apart from that!

Bendysnap · 03/10/2023 22:15

Needs to be Valentina as otherwise it’s a boy’s name.

I was going to say lose the hyphen as in the uk it would be tacky - but I now see you’re in the US where I think it wouldn’t be such a social hindrance / people making judgments that you’re uneducated like it would in the UK.

Marblessolveeverything · 03/10/2023 22:16

@QueSyrahSyrah I have a teen and there has been discussions on some of the posters of her, the name rang a bell. But yep I would definitely run it through a few sites.

VeridicalVagabond · 03/10/2023 22:16

Surely this is a troll post and she knows about Ivy Valentine from Soul Calibur? She's famous for her tit physics. Don't name your child after a famously jiggly videogame woman.

Theoldwoman · 03/10/2023 22:17

Way too much! I wouldn’t like it for my own name, so would never inflict it on someone else.

PissOffJeffrey · 03/10/2023 22:17

@Spudsanyway all three of mine were born the day they were induced.

OP, there's no such thing as "very unique". Unique means the only one. Something either is unique or it isn't.

Ivy Valentine would not be unique as both names are very popular, Ivy more so of course.

Apart from that I love the names (just lose the hyphen).

Congratulations.

Judyjoo · 03/10/2023 22:17

I was plumping for Majorca!

Ivy Valentine is quite cute and sounds better than Ivy Valentina, although Valentina on it own is really pretty! Not sure about Val or Tina for short though.

ElleLeopine · 03/10/2023 22:17

In general, Mumsnet doesn't like double-barrelled names, but I think this one is lovely! It really rolls off the tongue beautifully!
You have also explained the cultural significance of both the holiday and having the two names joined.
I think go for it, it's fab!

militarychick5260 · 03/10/2023 22:18

Talipesmum · 03/10/2023 22:13

OP do you mean holiday in that it’s a day where something is celebrated / marked? In the UK a holiday means a day off. Valentine’s Day here is just a normal saints day / celebration / gifts etc - we wouldn’t call it a holiday but I think you just mean a celebration maybe?

I think the two v’s in ivy and valentine sound nice together. Agree that valentine is a boys name but I think because it’s associated with hearts and romance, people often gender-stereotype associate it as more feminine (even though st valentine was male).

Edited

Yes I'm from the US and we don't use the word Holiday to mean vacation. We used it to me Christmas, birthday, Easter, etc. I didn't realize this was a UK board. It is seen as more common in the States because of the type of holiday and what it's associated with. I can see why this is confusing people now lol.

Ivy = cute
Valentine = naff
Hyphenated = naff as fuck
All the shite specifically associated with Valentine’s Day = Naffest thing you could do, get a grip

This is the first time I'm hearing the word naff lol. UK slang is the best, I'm gonna start using that now instead of wack or cringe lmao

Lovely name!

As an aside, holiday must mean something different in the US, more like celebration?

Because holiday in the UK definitely means time off work, ideally abroad. Or a bank holiday is a day work closes.

In all we get 5.6 weeks worth of holiday per year, (as in time off work) by law.

Does holiday in the US just mean a celebration but you still need to go to work?

You guys really need to organise for better employment rights!

MiniBossFromAus · 03/10/2023 22:19

Mumsnet is very much UK based so the opinions on the name will reflect regional preferences.

Holidays are days off work. Again a regional thing.

Personally I would not saddle a child with 12 character first name, our hyphenate a first name. It feels very twee.

Valentina is beautiful on its own.

WideLegPant · 03/10/2023 22:20

Valentine is a female character in the Ender's Game books. I quite like it myself. I'd pick one or other for the first name as it's a bit of a mouthful with both.

nebulae · 03/10/2023 22:20

OP, there's no such thing as "very unique". Unique means the only one. Something either is unique or it isn't.

This. There are no degrees of uniqueness. Either in the UK or US.

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/10/2023 22:13

Well. This is quite a lesson in running potential names through Google isn't it. Crikey. Not quite the cutesy pink heart vibe the OP has in mind.

I already know about the character and the association doesn't bother my husband and I. She's not named after that and she's a human not a video game character so its fine

Ivy is a beautiful name for a beautiful a baby, a young girl, a young woman and a woman.

ors timeless. Leave valentines for a middle name. I can tell by your post yourself and DH are so excited for this LO to come and she will be so so loved and cherished. It’s lovely to read

MisschiefMaker · 03/10/2023 22:23

If it makes you happy go for it! There are American women out there called Dustin, so in the context of the full range of names it's fine.

That said, I have only heard it used as a boys name before.

badg3r · 03/10/2023 22:25

I'm not so keen on how she would be called ivy (some people will inevitably drop the second part) and her name initials would also be I-V. Sounds exactly the same aloud...

MariaVT65 · 03/10/2023 22:26

I personally agree that it’s too long and if she is highly unlikely to ever use that name in day to day life, is there a point? Either she’ll be called Ivy, or Val. I’d use one as a middle name.

GiraffeLaSophie · 03/10/2023 22:28

I’m surprised that so many other people are surprised by your use of ‘holiday’. I’d have thought that would be an Americanism that lots of people would know about.

It’s really hard to say whether or not she’ll be bullied, or whether it’s cheesy, because of the (very evident from your post!) cultural differences. I don’t like double barrelled first names, but I think Ivy is lovely and Valentine is nice too. It’s traditionally a boys name, but I think it sounds nicer than Valentina.

Congratulations!

Dixiechickonhols · 03/10/2023 22:29

As a middle name fine but no to the hyphen. Hyphens are a pain no one will call her full thing and in later life it’s causes problems on exam certificates, plane tickets etc.
DD has a friend with a hyphen and the girl herself hates it thinks it’s chavvy. Never uses it. But it gets read out at official events.
Valentine’s Day isn’t a holiday?

BaronessBomburst · 03/10/2023 22:29

Ivy Valentina is lovely!

jolaylasofia · 03/10/2023 22:29

valentine is a saints day. It's not a holiday. people don't get the day off work on valentine's day do they? it's a normal day-

dayofcheese · 03/10/2023 22:30

Terribly terrible name

scotscorner · 03/10/2023 22:31

Listen to everyone telling you the hyphen has to go! Otherwise the name is fine. Good luck with your lovely little girl 🤍
