Very unique girl name (named after a holiday) ❤️ Will she be bullied? Is it cheesy?

My husband and I are due with our first child, a baby girl, at the end of February. I'll likely be induced 2 weeks early due to blood pressure which would fall exactly on Valentine's Day.

We have decided to call her our little lovebug.....

Ivy-Valentine🩷🎀❤️

Valentine pronounced just like the holiday!

It will be a double-barreled first name, but she will probably go by either Ivy or Valentine since it's long. We love having both names included in her first name. A lot of people have been saying to just make it her first and middle name, but we aren't worried about it since most people will call her one or the other and she will have options like I never had.

What are your thoughts?? Do you think she might be bullied around Valentine's Day since it is the holiday of love? Kids can be mean at that age! We are set on the name completely but any opinions are welcome. She will probably be wearing a lot of heart themed clothing and pink and red until she tells me she wants otherwise hehe, is it cheesy 🙈 I love names that have a story relating to the child's birth. Even if she isn't born on Valentine's Day it'll still be close enough so it works for us.

That's a girl name attached to a boy name ... and since when is Valentine's Day a holiday? Thought you were going to say Ibiza or suchlike.

RedGreenBlueSky · 03/10/2023 22:04

The name's fine. Valentine is a boys' name but as it's not particularly common then you can probably get away with it. Not my cup of tea but not ridiculous.

What is a bit ridiculous is calling Valentine's day a holiday (it took me ages to work out what you meant - I thought you must have been on actual holiday to somewhere called that). It's no more a holiday than national doughnut day is.

AnneWhittle · 03/10/2023 22:05

Valentine is a boy's name, OP

militarychick5260 · 03/10/2023 22:05

OrangeBlossomPretty · 03/10/2023 21:58

Um. It's not a holiday.
I'd call her Valentina. If you are set on it.
Valentine is a boy's name.

And I'd lose the double barrel.

I'm from the US and it is a holiday

Just to let you know that is the name of a rather explicit video game character. She features in em, animated "adult themed movies".

usernother · 03/10/2023 22:06

@militarychick5260 you get a day off for Valentine's Day??

topnoddy · 03/10/2023 22:06

I thought it was going to be somewhere you went on holiday !

Like Great Yarmouth or Brackelsham Bay

By the way Valetines ain't no holiday

jays · 03/10/2023 22:07

I think it’s really cute!

AuntieStella · 03/10/2023 22:08

Valentine is definitely a boys name, very much still in use in mainland Europe.

The female version is Valentina.

If set on Valentine, I would suggest using it just as a middle name, particularly as it will be seen by so many as masculine

(If DS1 had been on time, he was going to have Valentine as a middle name)

Thisismynewusername1 · 03/10/2023 22:08

You’re going to dress her in red and hearts?

I also don’t think Valentines is a “holiday”. A holiday is where you get time off…

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 03/10/2023 22:09

My grandad was called Valentine

underneaththeash · 03/10/2023 22:10

mumsnet is a UK site though, it’s not a holiday here and it’s also a boy’s name. And here hyphenated names use both parts, do it’s difficult when they first start school.
So maybe not the best place to canvas opinions!

SofiYol · 03/10/2023 22:10

I was born on Valentine’s Day, and I would have changed my name as soon as I was able if my parents had done this.

BruceAndNosh · 03/10/2023 21:55

When you said she was going to be named after a holiday, I thought you were planning on calling her Mykonos or Ibiza

Ha me too.

I used to know a female Valentine.

Two names & it’s fine. Hyphenated is too long.

olympicsrock · 03/10/2023 22:11

Nope - not for me . Sorry .

No, it’s not a federal holiday.

Weddingblues23 · 03/10/2023 22:13

Ivy = cute
Valentine = naff
Hyphenated = naff as fuck
All the shite specifically associated with Valentine’s Day = Naffest thing you could do, get a grip

Brocollimatilda · 03/10/2023 22:13

Valley is not a name.

Most Vals are now 70+ (so prob due to come back into fashion tbf).

Talipesmum · 03/10/2023 22:13

OP do you mean holiday in that it’s a day where something is celebrated / marked? In the UK a holiday means a day off. Valentine’s Day here is just a normal saints day / celebration / gifts etc - we wouldn’t call it a holiday but I think you just mean a celebration maybe?

I think the two v’s in ivy and valentine sound nice together. Agree that valentine is a boys name but I think because it’s associated with hearts and romance, people often gender-stereotype associate it as more feminine (even though st valentine was male).

Well. This is quite a lesson in running potential names through Google isn't it. Crikey. Not quite the cutesy pink heart vibe the OP has in mind.

Fair enough - I think me and everyone else assumed you were British. Brace yourself for hundreds of replies about the holidays thing I'm afraid

usernother · 03/10/2023 22:06

@militarychick5260 you get a day off for Valentine's Day??

No...we consider Valentine's Day like St Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, etc. We don't get time off but it's still a major holiday here

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/10/2023 22:14

I don't think there's anything wrong with Valentine as a girl's name. I
(Another one disappointed we don't get to discuss you calling her after somewhere you've been on holiday. But also relieved she's not going to be called Jersey, Bruges or Kusadasi.)
