Expecting twins boys on 23June. My husband is obsessed with matching names. I am more flexible but to be honest I'd rather not.

My favourites are
Sebastian and Dorian
Florian and Tristian

My husband's
Jayden and Jaylen
Nick and Nico

I really really like Florian and Tristan - those are great together.

No to your husbands, especially the Nicks as just seems like a nn!

InceyWinceySpidy · 20/06/2023 20:03

Hi, mum of twins here.

Don't do this.

They will spend their lives being compared. Not maliciously, just inherently. The first to walk, talk, who's the cleverest one, who's the sportiest one, the funniest one, the tallest, the more academic, the more street smart...

They need their own individuality, desperately. They need to feel they are enough, not just one half of "the twins."

dartsofcupid · 20/06/2023 20:21

I don’t hate Martin. It’s been out so long it’s probably due a revival, the youngest Martin I know is 48. Sebastian and Martin sound like brothers.

whitabout Dexter? Or Magnus?

FangsForTheMemory · 20/06/2023 20:25

Bill Bryson describes a fictitious couple with children named Bonnie Connie Donnie Jonnie Lonnie Ronnie and Tammy-Wynette.

A horrible warning.

LateOnTheBandwagon · 20/06/2023 20:26

As for other stuff. Try to avoid calling them "the twins" and encourage close friends and family to avoid it too.
You will get loads of matching outfits when they are born. Immediately mix them up in the drawer.
Don't buy joint gifts (at least once they are old enough to notice)
When still young, do not price match Christmas / birthdays. The number of parcels is all important.
Always buy them a birthday cake each with their own candles.
Once at school, never let teachers report on both children at once.
Really, just treat them as siblings, not "twins".

Ronnie and Reggie
Bill and Ben

Don't even get me started. I actually know twins called Ronnie and Reggie.. apparently not after^^ the Ronnie and Reggie 🙃

orangeblosssom · 20/06/2023 20:33

Sebastian, Benjamin and Nico

QueenOfThorns · 20/06/2023 20:37

Fred and George. How has no one said this yet?

RedRiverSun · 20/06/2023 20:45

They need to be individuals. Names that are too close will make that hard and honestly it will be brutal for teachers, family and friends. It's completely avoidable.

RedRiverSun · 20/06/2023 20:45

Martin and Sebastian are lovely OP.

Bonbon21 · 20/06/2023 20:53

Correct anyone who refers to them as 'The Twins'.... The Boys... they are two brothers not one unit.
Get their hair cut differently as far as possible.. the crown hair may grow differently anyway.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/06/2023 20:56

Matching in a way where they complimented each other eg Same vibe and same number (or there abouts) of letters but with a completely different sound is best for twins.
Jayden and Jaylen. Nick and Nico sound ridiculous for twins. What if they both want to go by Jay or Nick. Some like Jayden and Jenson is a bit better or Nico and Niall.

TallerThanAverage · 20/06/2023 20:58

My DH has twin aunt and uncle Glyn and Glenys
They were children no. 9 and 10 so his gran could be forgiven for running out of ideas.

AdoraBell · 20/06/2023 21:06

I didn’t give my twins matching names because they are two separate humans. School, in Latin America, put them in separate classes as it’s standard there, they develop individually and have different interests and friend groups.

Now they are adults in Uni they have boyfriends, different cities, and both boyfriend are called Nick.

Lynca · 20/06/2023 21:22

Sorry but your husband sounds like an idiot. He's treating them as a gimmick, not two separate people.

I am an identical twin and I also gave birth to identical twins. People are already going to be treating them as one unit, calling them 'the twins' etc. It is your duty as their parents to encourage their individuality as much as possible so they can have their own identity. I can't stand it when people dress their twins exactly the same and give them ridiculous matchy names. People can see they are twins, you don't need to play it up!

Tell your husband to grow up and think of his sons.

TallerThanAverage · 20/06/2023 22:46

I also went to school with twins Nicola and Nicholas.
I'm a twin myself but my name and my brother’s name have nothing in common.

continentallentil · 20/06/2023 22:59

You are joking right?

TaylorSwiftFan · 20/06/2023 23:45

My favourites

Sebastian and Benjamin
Sebastian and Nicholas

Dazedandbemused0 · 21/06/2023 00:25

Oh gosh OP your husbands names are AWFUL! They have such a chavvy vibe. Yours are much better! Although I strongly disagree that twins names should be so matchy, Sebastian and Florian are nice together and sound different enough to match. I’m pretty sure it’s ‘Tristan’ not ‘Tristian’, no? And I don’t like Dorian, but it’s not awful like your husbands. I’d definitely choose Sebastian and Florian, of the names listed.

Dazedandbemused0 · 21/06/2023 00:27

How about Fabian instead of Florian? Or Lucian? Other names that sound lovely with Sebastian but aren’t too matchy:

  • Gabriel
  • Reuben
  • Jasper
  • Cassius
  • Jude
  • Isaac
  • Fabian
  • Nathanial
  • Elias
  • Felix
ChocChipHandbag · 21/06/2023 00:33

Yay and No doesn’t work, it needs to be Yay and Nay.

CallieQ · 21/06/2023 00:35

Matching names no!!!!!

Jayden and Jaylen? Are you serious??

CallieQ · 21/06/2023 00:38

Florian will get teased mercilessly at school

watcherintherye · 21/06/2023 00:42

Whatever you do, don’t call them Dorian and Florian! Grin

CallieQ · 21/06/2023 00:44

Boris and Johnson?
