I am just wondering. Since dd was born 4 weeks ago we have had lot's of people comment on her name. Both close family and friends.
Fair enough if it isn't what you would choose but i could never say to someone i don't like your choice after they have called their child that.
We have had plain ooh i don't like that to omg that's a name of a 90 year old woman.
Poor dp who chose it and now i am thinking poor dd !
By the way it's Martha!

My late much loved Nana would have been in her 90s now and was one of 9 sisters, she was Edie (DD2s middle name) and amongst them there was a Nell (cool name), Florence, Jemima, Louisa and Martha (fab name.) I would never comment on a name someone else has chosen as they all grow into them but have to confess when B-I-L had firstborn a couple of weeks ago and was torn between 2 names to saying WE LOVE MAX, MAX IS A GREAT NAME, whilst not mentioning the alternative. Also love the name Ruby but have to sing RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBEEE, LA LA LA LA LA LA to myself and the name Lola cant be said in my house without someone singing SHE WAS A SHOWGIRL but I repeat, this in the privacy of my own home and would never dream of saying this to the motehr as they are both lovely names.

i think Martha is a lovely name - i thought about for my last baby - but i already knew of 3 in my town - so next time someone is rude about her name you can tell them to p*@s off - it's a very popular name nowadays

Kindersurpise · 16/02/2008 21:40

Pollywobble
A friend of ours has a Leonard, I think it is lovely (very popular where we are at the moment though)

To add to the many positive comments - think Martha is fab - i love old names - our little daughter is called Florence (again people either say how lovely or what, oh right??)I just ignore the plebs ! You have made a fab choice...(wink)

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2008 22:03

Wow, nothing new to add, just to say a 90-year-old woman? a) what's wrong with that and b) a 90-year-old woman like, say, Martha Wainwright?

I did find it hilarious to see the spasm of 'oh blimey' that came over my mother's face and a few of that generation when they heard ds's name - they couldn't help it! but i loved the name anyway and of course they were never so phenomenally rude as to say anything but 'how lovely'. Enjoy our beautifully-named baby.

NB what about next time you speak to the rudest ones, say 'we realised you were absolutely right of course, and we've changed her name to Jezebel'

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2008 22:03

erm sorry, i mean of course enjoy YOUR beautifully-named baby

lydiathetattooedlady · 16/02/2008 22:15

my little girl is Esme Kitty-Rose, i wanted her first name/s to be kitty-rose but i was told not to as its 'stupid' and she'd get picked on so hence chose Esme to be first name, when she was first born people kept saying it was 'an old persons name' or 'is esme short for esmerelda?' no its frickin not!

pollywobbledoodle · 16/02/2008 22:26

polly apologises to all baby leonards and their parents.....

Kindersurpise · 16/02/2008 22:41

polly

Clary · 17/02/2008 00:47

how rude people are!

I strongly suspect that lots of people have hated my DCs' names (really 90yo names) but only my mother ever told me so

I always say "oh that's lovely" or whatever.

BTW I do really like Martha (but it wouldn't have gone with DS1's name so a no-no for DD)

I have a pal with a small Sybil and she gets "oh, is that a family name?" often, which I think is rude as well...

No way would I negatively comment on anyone's name in front of them. How rude!

BTW, I love the name Martha!

piratecat · 17/02/2008 09:27

just read your op, and have to say that yesyerday I was listening to The beatles, to the song 'Martha my dear', and thought that is a lovely name, and i would consider it if i ever had another baby!!!

People are so weird. Lots were unsure of my dd's name, but now its the 'norm' iyswim.

MrsMattie · 17/02/2008 09:28

I think it's outrageously ill mannered to comment on a child's name!

MrsFogi · 17/02/2008 09:48

Extremely rude to comment negatively on your choice of name. The only acceptable responses are tto effuse about the name or if that can't be done convincingly, say nothing.

threestars · 20/02/2008 22:44

No, I wouldn't. Even on names for babies not yet born. If my friend liked the name enough, I'd get used to it. MIL has already commented on the one name I mentioned to her, saying "well I hope you change your mind by the time she's born". Don't think I have, either.
by the way, I used to work with a Martha and she was the coolest chick I've ever come across. Very independent, strong-minded, stylish and fun and devil-may-care. I've liked that name ever since.

PortAndLemon · 20/02/2008 22:50

I wouldn't, even if I didn't like it.

And Martha is a pefectly lovely name, and getting more popular, so your friends and relations are being even more out of order.

missytabitha · 21/02/2008 21:00

Got to add to other posts, I think that is a totally gorgeous name and I have a great grandma and a friend the same age with that name which is probably why I think that. Both are two of the nicest people you could ever meet. And no, though I love the name you chose even if I didnt I would never say to anyone, its totally rude to do so.

thebluefoxategreensocks · 21/02/2008 22:15

Bit late replying to this thread (there's no way I can keep up with all the thousands of messages on MN! lol)

I can't believe people would be so rude as to make negative comments about your baby's name!! Have they never been taught better?!

In any case, Martha is a lovely name! Good choice, IMO!

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 22/02/2008 11:12

Very rude. I wouldn't say anything however bad i thought the name.

Martha is lovely anyway so not only are they rude, they're wrong as well. PILLOCKS

BibiThree · 22/02/2008 11:13

You would be entirely within your rights to respond to "oooh I don't like that" with a
"fark orf"

Really. How rude.

Broodymumof2 · 22/02/2008 13:05

Just wanted to say Martha is my great grandmothers, my grandmothers name, and my mothers name and if my next dc is a girl she will be a Martha also to follow the tradition...i think it is such a charming name it can be "oldy worldly" (which i love) and modern..and to be honest if you have over opinionated

agirlandtwoboys · 22/02/2008 20:35

My kids are called Lily, Thomas and Ned. We are having Martha for the next if it's a girl.
We have had some awful comments about Neds name.
Ignorant shits.

Beenleigh · 22/02/2008 20:37

Martha is a gorgeous name
