I am just wondering. Since dd was born 4 weeks ago we have had lot's of people comment on her name. Both close family and friends.
Fair enough if it isn't what you would choose but i could never say to someone i don't like your choice after they have called their child that.
We have had plain ooh i don't like that to omg that's a name of a 90 year old woman.
Poor dp who chose it and now i am thinking poor dd !
By the way it's Martha!

hatrick - hope you told your friend she would be doing your DD a favour. Who the hell would want to work for a company that had such a ridiculous attitute displayed by it's recruitmant staff??

lilyloo - close family can be really insensitive at times IME but I would expect more sense from my friends. Both my DDs names were 'rejected' by my father and I got 'you can't call her that it's too girly' etc etc. .

btw, I think Martha is a lovely name (I really do). I love Margot for a girl but DH says no way. DC3 is going to be a boy anyway, if he ever starts cross dressing I'll suggest Margot as his alter-ego's name

BigHotMama · 16/02/2008 17:17

I dont know any 90 yearold women called Martha? Ignore their rude comments I think its lovely and different.

lilyloo · 16/02/2008 17:18

Thanks everyone as dp has said just ignore them but i really feel like shouting FGS Don't be so bloody rude!
However i won't and will just grit my teeth throught the comments and suppose they will get less as they 'get use to it'

ah martha is nice, reminds me of beatle's song.

onlygirlinthehouse · 16/02/2008 17:20

People are so rude, I think name choice is really personal and I would never dream of critising anyones choice, and anyway children always grow into their name and by the time they are 1 you cant imagine them being called anything else.

My sil was really rude about our choice of a girls name when I was pregnant and I was really upset, so much so that I couldnt have used it, he was a boy so it didnt matter, but even so it still annoys me thinking of it now. When she had her little boy she chose a name that I thought was really boring and old, but I never said anything (of course) and now it suits him and I like it (a bit)

Edith - another nice name. dh wanted Edith but I wasn;t convinced. love it now.

MAMAZON · 16/02/2008 17:39

martha is becoming very popular lately. not a 90 year old womans name at all.

the poeple you know are rude.

Unfitmother · 16/02/2008 17:43

how rude!

nooka · 16/02/2008 17:43

I've bitten my tongue on a couple of occasions, but wouldn't say anything directly - after all there's not much point is there, and not nice to upset new parents. I guess Martha doesn't sound very baby IYSWIM? Great toddler/child/adult name, just no obvious diminuitive and people do like their "ie's". My parent's in law were apparently told that dh's name was a dog's name when he was little (although in fact it was the no1 boys name that year).

MaryAnnSingleton · 16/02/2008 17:45

Martha is a lovely,lovely name !

ruty · 16/02/2008 17:47

lovely name, and even if it wasn't would not dream of commenting negatively. Extremely rude.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 16/02/2008 17:49

I think Martha is a lovely name and you need to tell people to not be so rude and take your baby straight off them if they are holding her.

BTW It isn't a name of a 90 year old woman as people tend to be named a lot younger than that!

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 16/02/2008 17:52

I don't see why you should grit your teeth in face if such rudeness to be honest. Just tell them it is very big of them to say they will get used to it as it really is none of their business.

lilyloo · 16/02/2008 17:52

LOL Nab Have contemplated saying that we wouldn't visit again as it obv bothered them so much
It obv not just me then see there are a few rude people out there.
I see it on a comparison with saying ooh your baby's ugly isn't it! You just wouldn't would you !

So rude. Ignore and enjoy your new baby

(My BF was in a lift with her 6 week old DS and called him 'Buster' - his nickname - and the woman in the lift with her said 'Please tell me that you haven't called your child Buster' - BF was SOOOOO tempted to say 'Yes actually, I have...' - PEOPLE ARE V RUDE)

Wilkie · 16/02/2008 17:57

Lilyloo - I would say next time 'Well, that's pleasant isn't it ' and see what they say

hana · 16/02/2008 17:57

Martha is a gorgeous name. can't imagine that people would be so rude to comment on a child's name

constancereader · 16/02/2008 17:57

How rude.

When we told people our new ds's name a lot of people were openly surprised and one said, laughing, "No really, what's his name?"
It is a common name in some parts of the country too, just not where we live.

Martha is a lovely name, as are Kitty and Edith!

Pity their ignorance and despise them.

janeite · 16/02/2008 17:59

No I wouldn't say anything. And Martha is a lovely name anyway!

bitofadramaqueen · 16/02/2008 18:34

That is so rude. I'd have a bank of charming comments ready to throw back at anyone... 'mmm, it is a bit unusual but we didn't want something that was common - you must have known lots of people with your name at school' etc.

turquoise · 16/02/2008 18:39

No, anyone who would is a rude twat.

Martha is nice.

Fletchaar - how the hell is that Glumwhatsit name pronounced?

having said (below) that I would never comment on someone else's choice of name, I might make an exception for Glumdalclich !

Isn't that the name of the giant child in Gulliver's Travels? Not sure what they are trying to say about their daughter ?
