Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

I think it's lovely. Hallie would be a compromise or willow

I think it's a great name, my son has an unusual name and now that he has a son they've gone for unusual too, so clearly it hasn't put him off.
I used to work with a girl called Echo, in a professional job who has gone on to management roles. You don't have to have a boring name to do well at work its just dull people that tell you that!

Echo is boring - unusual doesn’t mean interesting or not boring. It just means that it’s not popular - usually because it’s a rubbish name.

Ds has a friend called Echo Echo. That’s what she gets, every single time.

Halo is beautiful, but it just does not go with Raye.

I love Harlow!

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 18:37

I think it's lovely without the surname Raye.

There are other names that would be unusual and flow well with Raye -
Leilani
Naomi
Leonie
Pernilla
Mariana
Anoushka
Quinn
Delaney
Tamsin
Xanthe
Finola
Endellion
Sylvana
Garnet
Jacinda
Saskia
Winona

I like and chose traditional names but actually think Halo Raye works if you want something a bit more 'cool' or unusual.

I think it's very distinctive but not silly.

Other suggestions:

Harper Raye
Oonagh Raye
Felicity Raye
Betsy Raye
Dolly Raye (I love your surname and the hilly billy element it adds to a name 😁. I'd utilise that!)

Oh and Mumsnet always act as if giving your child an unusual name is a tragic event when in reality we all know children and adults with unusual names.
Some like their name some don't the same as those with commonly used names.

So take the hysteria with a pinch of salt.

Kennykenkencat · 20/01/2023 19:09

Why do people say no to unusual names and then come up with lists of really awful granny names thinking they are something better Then justify it by saying that going into a business meeting and introducing yourself as Halo and cringing. At least who ever you meet won’t forget your name
Own the name and no one will notice.

Ds if I had my way would have been called Tiger.

DH wanted to call him Adam. (A School bully)

We settled on something from my heritage which Ds loves but Tiger I think will be used for a gc as both Dd and Ds love it. especially what the full name was going to be.

DS is definitely his name but would have suited Tiger more.

Kennykenkencat · 20/01/2023 19:16

I am old and all the sensibly named people I have met over the years blur into insignificance

I remember CatWoman and River from 20/30 + years ago
But the Emmas and Evelyns, Susans and Sarahs blur into insignificance.

My son also wishes we'd named him the more out there unusual name we toyed with but backed away from rather than the nice solid name we gave him.

I loved Satine when I was pregnant with my eldest. Vivienne was my wild card with my youngest.
DH asked that I perhaps stopped trying to name our children after fictional ladies of the night.

I think it's good to go in to parenthood with an idea of a name, but once she's here live with it for a bit, see how it feels, if it suits her.

I think the last name defo works in your favour - it goes with lots of names

SpaceBunInstaHun · 20/01/2023 20:31

My friends daughter is named Halona and it suits her

Was she not able to spell Helena?

DietCock · 20/01/2023 20:43

And Harlow and Harper ought to be illegal.

SpaceBunInstaHun · 20/01/2023 20:57

@DietCock wish I was as funny as you

Flaunch · 20/01/2023 21:02

Delaney Raye is a fabulous name 👍🏼

LulooLemon · 20/01/2023 21:21

(Seeing as you've asked) it's no to Halo Raye from me.

Derbee · 20/01/2023 21:21

I really think people should introduce themselves as the name they are thinking of for their baby…. See how it feels, and what the reactions are.

You should spend your pregnancy introducing yourself to new people as Halo Ray and experience what your poor child will be expected to deal with daily.

WineCap · 20/01/2023 21:54

I think there would be lots of jokes about her halo slipping etc in high school. The hello ray thing is also a big issue in my eyes.

CrazyCatLadyCat · 21/01/2023 08:32

Definitely not

cptartapp · 21/01/2023 08:57

It's the name of a violent Xbox game.
Regardless, no.

MarleneH · 21/01/2023 09:42

It’s a lovely name - it’s not about what others think, it’s what you like. If you don’t go with it, you may regret it later.

Chiliau · 25/01/2023 06:59

I think Halo is pretty, you can always change it or consider something similar like Harlow. Congratulations and all the best!

MissMarplesbag · 25/01/2023 07:11

Harlow is a town in Essex, not really a name for a baby.

Irisheyesareshining · 25/01/2023 07:28

However different , pretty you think it sounds you will definitely be setting your daughter up for years of teasing at school, every time she says her name the conversation will be around it . I personally think it’s cruel , she will not thank you especially when she gets to comprehensive.
