Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

It sounds like a cereal. Halo Rye. Brightening up your morning.
So it’s a no from me.

Gossipxox · 20/01/2023 00:50

I love it, its a lovely name x

groovergirl · 20/01/2023 00:51

Halo will be a challenging name to live up to, unless she wants to be an anime character, a saint or a burlesque artiste. She'll be forever explaining It, and I doubt she will thank you for it.

With your lovely surname you have lots of options in a similar vein:
Angelica Raye
Selena Raye
Paloma Raye
Amberley Raye
Giralda Raye
Millicent Raye
Veronica Raye

I agree with PPs that Halo would be good as a middle name. Just tuck it in there in case she goes into a creative career and would like a nom de plume.

It’s terrible. Please don’t. It’s not a name, it’s just a word. It sounds ridiculous. If you like it that much then change your own name to it (I bet you wouldn’t) but don’t inflict it on a child.

MenaiMna · 20/01/2023 00:52

I immediately thought of the very violent Sci fi computer game. Are you a fan?
Second thought was religious zealot.
It's a very strong choice!

Just as a point of interest, Halo's been in the top 1000 girls' names in the USA for the past few years. Can't link to results, but the search engine's below.

I thought of the death metal song by Soil first. Then the video game. Then the heyllo job search company. Then Halo Fresh for some reason!
I do quite like it as a name, but I really don't think it would work for an actual child in everyday life, all her life.

CallieQ · 20/01/2023 00:59

Halo Raye...

Why??

Startwithamimosa · 20/01/2023 01:00

It's a bit 'out there' but I like it more than a boring overused name. Unfortunately I feel with the surname it's too out there. But if you really like it, then who cares. I also worry about these kinds of name, incase the child turns out not to be such an angel, then the name ends up being a bit too ironic

LadyGAgain · 20/01/2023 01:01

I like it! But then I love music and it sounds like the name of a band!!

Ah, but there's very few names that get more slated on here than something that sounds American.

Rainbowbaby13 · 20/01/2023 01:08

Kind of makes me think Halo Fresh but I dunno why or the episode of the goes wrong show (if you know you know 😂)

joan12 · 20/01/2023 01:14

Instead, what about:
Hero
Helena
Lucy
Lucia
Angela/Angelina

StartupRepair · 20/01/2023 01:22

Halo Ray sounds like a weapon. How about Harlowe Ray?

oakleaffy · 20/01/2023 01:33

''Halo''?

A 'No' from me..''Halo Raye'' sounds like ''Hello''.

If it's related to any sort of game, it will date horrendously.

This exactly.

''Boring'' classic names don't date, and to lumber a child with a name that will go 'Out of date' quicker than stale milk is unfair.

JennyWI · 20/01/2023 01:37

How about hala?

MarieKlepto · 20/01/2023 01:40

Lots of PPs have mentioned "Hello Ray" being our pronuciation of that name. We probably come from all parts of the UK with a range of accents. If we're all thinking that . . .

CatsandDogs22 · 20/01/2023 01:41

I’m perplexed that you think your surname makes it better, not worse.

agree it sounds a lot like Hello Ray.

It is possible to give a child a less common name without setting them up for bullying.

antipodeancanary · 20/01/2023 01:42

My hair dresser is called Halo. It's fine, no one seems to think anything of it.

Twoinapod · 20/01/2023 05:22

I know of a River Breeze. But honestly I think it’s inevitable that people will judge her for that name, she’ll spend a lifetime of people seeing that name and automatically assuming her background or not being considered by employers.

Halo isn’t a bad name, but it’s a bit too much with your surname.

Y7drama · 20/01/2023 05:27

I wouldn’t, especially with your surname. Maybe as a middle name. I like the advice I’ve seen on this board before. Go to lots of random places and introduce yourself as halo raye and see if you like it! May be illuminating if not very practical

SilentNightDancer · 20/01/2023 05:33

I thought of the video game and I don't even play video games.

glitterfarts · 20/01/2023 05:33

I quite like Halo, but not with that surname. Is she having your surname? Usually babies have mothers surname, if you aren't married.
Does the other parent surname work better.

MissedItByThisMuch · 20/01/2023 05:36

I normally hate word type names but I actually don’t mind this one. For something similar sounding and still pretty out there I second a pp’s suggestion of Hero. I don’t know why more girls aren’t called this, I absolutely love it and it has the “legitimacy” conferred by being a Greek mythology name.
