Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

Middle name 'Wars'? And I'm not even a gamer.

Halo Raye sounds like a video game.

This was my first thought! Sounds like a character from a post-apocalyptic RPG.

It's no from me, and I'm usually a fan of 'out-there' names.

Delectable · 20/01/2023 11:59

Lovely name. With the surname I need something in the middle. Halo _ Ray.

MyCreation · 20/01/2023 12:06

I like it in theory but not for a real life baby, girl, woman.

Id go for something like Helena, Halle and use Halo as her nickname.

BriteSparke · 20/01/2023 12:07

Middle name Jen 😄

How about Harlow? It's closer to being an actual name and with a v similar sound.

Stevie6 · 20/01/2023 12:19

Imagine her being a teenager and all the "halo slipped" and "wear your halo dirty" that she would have to deal with

amusedbush · 20/01/2023 12:23

I came to say it sounds like someone butchering the name Hilary but I see I've been beaten to it!

Honestly, I think it's terrible. It's one of those fluffy choices that sounds cute for a toddler but will be ridiculous on a grown woman.

If you're really set on that style of name, please go for Harlow/Harley/Hallie/Harper. None of those would be my first choice but they're much better than Halo Raye.

Interesting, to me Ocean is just as "out there" as (if not more so than) Halo. I guess because to me both names represent things rather than people.

I know a girl called Ocean and she is just the kindest, sweetest girl which is why it comes to mind.

My kids have very normal (virtue) names. So I personally wouldn't chose anything out there but was thinking in the lines of what OP might like.

Woodandsky · 20/01/2023 12:29

I think it's a great name, my son has an unusual name and now that he has a son they've gone for unusual too, so clearly it hasn't put him off.
I used to work with a girl called Echo, in a professional job who has gone on to management roles. You don't have to have a boring name to do well at work its just dull people that tell you that!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/01/2023 12:35

But it's not just the Halo part, it's that she'd be called Halo Ray.

Lcb123 · 20/01/2023 12:37

Sorry but please think about her adult life-imagine her as a lawyer in court with that name.

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 20/01/2023 12:38

No. It sounds like the name you’d give to a product, could have been a sibling to a DVD player.

Pipsquiggle · 20/01/2023 12:47

Look @MyBabysName you can name your baby what you like.

If you go for an out there name it will either be the making of her or she might have the piss taken out of her.

Personally I don't mind Halo but I think it is ridiculous with Raye. It's a cosmic version of Ben Dover, not as bad but you get my drift.

Laukat · 20/01/2023 12:47

I don't think I'd forgive my parents if they inflicted that name on me, sorry! But if you love it go for it!

Thesenderofthiscard · 20/01/2023 13:46

Halo is also the name of a really well-known video game... why not go the whole hog and name her Grand Theft or Call of Duty? Those would be unusual baby names...

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/01/2023 13:50

It sounds like a Marvel Universe character so no.

Also calling your kid Halo is like calling her heavenly or Angel - it’s naff, it’s hard to live up to, and if she’s troublesome it will become a running joke between her teachers.

Find a name that will help her in life, not hinder.

bakewellbride · 20/01/2023 13:52

A cruel choice. I used to teach and trust me kids with these strange names are often miserable.

bakewellbride · 20/01/2023 13:53

Hayley is a nice name.

ItchySnoof · 20/01/2023 14:01

Love the suggestions of Harlow like it's not an awful town in Essex, vs Halo which although not ideal would be WAY better than that.

aSofaNearYou · 20/01/2023 14:47

I think people are wrong about the associations. I play video games and still, I don't think the Halo thing is an issue. It's far too much of a common word to be solely associated with that, it's not at all like calling her Minecraft as someone else said. If someone did think of the game they'd have to be pretty blinkered to assume she must be named after that, instead of just the pretty commonplace word. The Beyoncé song came to mind well before the game for me.

Not sure if "hello Ray" is a thing or why people keep going on about it but if it is I doubt it would be known to young kids, and if it's just perceived as funny because it sounds a bit like something else, well, it's not that funny, is it? It doesn't even sound like a rude or embarrassing word.

The one thing Halo has against it is that yes, it is a little "out there". You just need to decide if you want to give her an out there name or not.

Greatly · 20/01/2023 14:50

I opened this thinking I'd hate it but I actually quite like it. It does sound like Hallo Ray a bit though.

I don't know anything about the town (its existence didn't register in my brain until I read your comment, to be honest) but at least Harlow is a name. I'm in Scotland and, after a quick google, apparently it's number 86 on the list here so not unheard of.

ter19 · 20/01/2023 15:23

Personally I think it's cute, OP

Woodandsky · 20/01/2023 15:56

Someone already has the name:

And she seems to be doing OK I mean
