Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

Call her Halo by all means, but be aware it won’t guarantee her being chosen to be Mary in the Nativity play.

signed Viques,( mother of Madonna and Virginia )

Hallie?
Halle?
Lois?

Halo - too much like Hallo, Hey! Low, angels and technical devices. Not a nice sound in itself.

Of course.

If you're giving birth to a Powerpuff Girl.

Otherwise...of course not.

A bit late to the party but this one had me on the floor.
I think of the Beyonce song. Then I think of halogen. Then I think of kids being kids saying halo, halo who's there? You know the rest.
Raye is lovely.

Arou · 20/01/2023 11:16

I think it’s proper cute! Sounds angelic

This exactly.

''Boring'' classic names don't date, and to lumber a child with a name that will go 'Out of date' quicker than stale milk is unfair.

Go for it

Yes they do.
What boring classic names are you thinking of

Only Biblical or kings and queens names have any sort of staying power

I hate my boring name. Everyone I have ever come across hates this name.
it features on names you hate threads regularly.

My children have slightly out there middle names and use those in business to stand out.

DrPsy · 20/01/2023 11:21

It’s a gorgeous name 😇

LightHousePanda · 20/01/2023 11:23

I first read it as hallo but Halo is better although personally i wouldn't have wanted that name at school. I think there's potential for silly jokes and also with the surname it does sound like some fantasy weapon.

LateAF · 20/01/2023 11:23

I quite like it - it's not that extreme.

But with her lovely surname there's many better options.

Elina, Eliana, Dara, Hope, Hadley, Helena, Yara, Yumi - all sound a bit better with Raye and not as "out" there.

I guess we wanted something different. But we also don't want to make her stand out too much? We thought with our surname it may have made for a lovely name

Trust me, as someone with a different name (very normal name but not in my home country or even here in the UK), standing out as a child and teen is awful.

I grew into it and I actually like the history of the name but it's not easy being "one of those".

I do understand where my mum came from, she did the same to my sister, but it's hard to accept it when you are a child.

Side story - we have a DD with a name you don't find everywhere in her year group or surrounding years and I didn't think she would feel out of place or unusual. Since 2021, she decided she wants to be called with a totally different name and plans to change it legally later on. Her decision, her life, her future. So, be prepared that even if you call your baby something like "Anne" or "Emily", she may end up with something different.

WetLettuce2 · 20/01/2023 11:29

I actually like Halo and have never heard it before.
But not with your surname sorry.

LetUsPonce · 20/01/2023 11:29

I like it but I would spell it Rae not Raye.

Glorianna · 20/01/2023 11:31

I like it. I don't think it rolls off the tongue too easy would be my only feedback.

It's a breath of fresh air amongst all the Elizabeths and Charlottes.

Flameshame · 20/01/2023 11:32

I actually belly laughed at this.

im sorry op but it’s a ridiculous name. Sounds like Kylo Ren or any other number of sci-fi not actual names

So the poor kid would not only have to contend with a daft name but a different Surname to her parents?

Great ideaHmm

Allthebears · 20/01/2023 11:35

Gilda Raye?

Gilda - 'Golden or Gilded' (Similar meaning to Halo! Unless it's just the sound of the name that you like).

You should choose whatever you like.

The main thing I would consider isn’t really to do with your last name but the way in which it might be continuously misheard for ‘hello’.

Then there is the song ‘Halo’ by Beyoncé.

To me, Halo Raye could sound like the name of a celeb or it could sound like someone is saying ‘hello Ray’.

Shortenings-wise, people will call her ‘Hay’. Then it could sound like she’s being called all the time….as in ‘hey!’.

I do like Halo - it’s pretty but I would worry myself that it’s just too different.

Bear in mind it can also be used as a boy’s name (if you google).

curlymacv · 20/01/2023 11:38

Whoever suggested Hallie is a genius!

How about Hallie Lorelei Raye, nickname Halo?

That’s like trying to say red lorry, yellow lorry!
What a mouthful!

KAYMACK · 20/01/2023 11:41

I love the name Halo. It is beautiful.

My first association is with comic-book character Halo Jones, who I believe was very feisty in a very understated way.

Go for it and I hope all goes well with the birth.

RobertaFirmino · 20/01/2023 11:42

You're setting the poor girl up for a lifetime of having to explain that her name isn't Hayley and being asked if she was named after the video game.
If it's the religious aspect you're interested in, how about:
Stigmata
Sacrament
Vaticana
If you want a video game based name, try:
Minecrafta
F'Ortnite
Robloxe
Alternatively, consider:
Gamma
Voodoo
Manta

LetUsPonce · 20/01/2023 11:43

@JimHensonWasAGenius
😂😂😂No, I managed to read the OP, get distracted and then come back with the idea that the suggested first name was Raye. Note to self: reread the OP before you post 😁.

Whatshername17 · 20/01/2023 11:43

Imagine an adult woman in an office, or any workplace, called Halo.

CharitySchmarity · 20/01/2023 11:45

Halo to me is a kickass female character in a comic my brother used to read. He named a pet after her. (Oops, I see the person above me made the same association.)

As a name for a real live person, it feels a bit "rock star's daughter" to me, but it's certainly not the worst I've heard. I think it might work if you are confident enough to deal with any comments about it being unusual or relating to a game or a comic. I'd give a more conventional middle name in case she turns out to be the sort of person who just wants to disappear into the crowd.

Kelljo83 · 20/01/2023 11:45

I think it's a really nice name. It's unusual but not too unique to be branded silly. I come from London and live in Essex. It wouldn't be out of place in my 8 year olds school. There are kids called "Gold" and no-one bats an eyelid.
If you and your DP like the name, name her it.

Verbena17 · 20/01/2023 11:48

We chose a quite unique name for our DC (not really out there - an actual proper name) that is kind of biblical/Hebrew in origin, but wasn’t really commonly used. It is more so now.
We also loved it and the shortening.

However, now they’re an older teen, and people in their class have been putting it with a tv character it was also used for and taking the pee a bit, they are really annoyed we chose it for them.

I actually think they’ll like it when they’re an adult but during these teen years, it’s been stressful for them.
