Is this in the Kayden/Caiden/Jayden/Brayden camp?

I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

Oh yes butter will do nicely! Lots and lots of lovely butter.

There have been some really weird questions (and answers) about pronunciation around here lately. I have no idea why.

The pronunciation of scone is regional. It is totally pointless to argue about it.

amp.theguardian.com/science/2017/apr/23/how-do-you-pronounce-scone-answer-says-a-lot-english-language-day-shakespeare-birthday

Well of course, but pp were arguing that perfectly normal, regional pronounciations were weird!

SleepingStandingUp · 19/01/2023 23:39

How do you get a g sound in scone?

Or do you mean it rhymes with gone? Only if you're wrong 😂

😬
Exactly as @DuchessOfSausage said. "'S'gone".

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 17:33

Yes, very much, where I am (US).

Another name in the same camp is Jared.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 17:37

@Pinkdafodils

No, Caleb is pronounced Cay-leb.

To be pronounced Cah-leb, it would need two Ls.

Do you live in an English-speaking country?

DuchessOfSausage · 20/01/2023 17:39

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 15:05

I mean Ca-Leb and not Cay-leb

The derailing started here.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 17:41

@Pinkdafodils

The reason Mabel and Caleb have that long A sound is the single consonant immediately after the A, which is followed by the E.

Like the words make, made, shade, shaded, bake, baked, blame, blamed, shame, shamed, and a host of similar words.

English tends to be very consistent in this pattern.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/01/2023 17:44

@mathanxiety , it can be Cal-eb or Cay-leb in Wales. Like Jacob might be Jack-ob or Jay-cub or Elias El-ee-as or El-eye-as.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 18:07

Wales has its own quite different pronunciation (of this and several other names) thanks to the influence of the Welsh language.

In anglophone countries, the general rule of English orthography applies.

KirstenBlest · 20/01/2023 18:36

@mathanxiety , it's because it's the name in the Welsh Bible. Many of the biblical names have Welsh versions, but the ones that have the same spelling of the name as in the English Bible, will use the Welsh pronunciation which is phonetic.
Lois, Leah, Daniel, Eli, Elias, Caleb, Esau, Cain, etc sound different, and you could end up with a Loyce and Lowiss and an El-ee-as and El-eye-as in the same class at school.

You also get common names like Edward, Robert, Richard and Thomas being pronounced in a 'welsh' way, but these aren't so popular for babies these days. Thomas would be more likely to be spelt Tomos. I've no idea if welsh-speaking parents are naming their babies Edward, but it is popular.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2023 18:46

Yes, the influence of the Welsh language means there are alternative and perfectly acceptable pronunciations in Wales.

But in countries where English isn't influenced by Welsh, the standard pronunciation is Cay-leb.

MumofSpud · 20/01/2023 19:59

No absolutely not!
It's a fab name

MumofSpud · 20/01/2023 21:57

KirstenBlest · 20/01/2023 12:47

@SleepingStandingUp , I would judge a parent depending on the name. The first time I heard Jadon was when a friend said she was naming her child it. She's israeli, so I didn't think anything other than it was OK.

If I taught a Tolomy, I'd think 'What were the parents thinking?'.

Isn't it Ptolemy? Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 20/01/2023 23:28

MumofSpud · 20/01/2023 21:57

I assumed that was the point, idiot try hard parents who don't even know how to spell a name cos they're not good enough to use it in her opinion

GoAgainstNicki · 20/01/2023 15:48

What’s wrong with Kayden/Jayden names?

It's only for the lower classes darling, so we know they're in the rightful place, beneath us

🙄

Obv not my opinion before anyone reports me.

That’s so interesting, I’ve never heard of that before! My son’s name is Kaiden and my family is working class so I guess we fit the criteria. I love the name😬

KirstenBlest · 20/01/2023 12:42

@SleepingStandingUp, if you read my post you'll see that it said you can draw inferences about the parents

My guess would be
Thomas's parents probably like solid traditional names
Tom's parents liked Tom but not Thomas
Tommy's mother thinks Cillian Murphy is hot

So the inferences you made were two of them liked the name they picked and presumably Cillian Murphy played a bloke called Tommy at some point where he looked hotter than he does as just Cillian hence using Tommy not Cillian. Wow, your insight is so... Insightful 🙄

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/01/2023 09:36

DuchessOfSausage · 20/01/2023 17:39

Yes, I've noticed the common denominator. I am beginning to wonder if we are being used as an ESOL resource, or simply being wound up.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/01/2023 11:36

I've noticed a trend to contradict posters and then a pile up of other posters agreeing, or a poster being obtuse (e.g. about Caleb not being Cal-eb).
There was a thread where a poster accused another of posting under several names, and I think it might have been a pot calling a kettle black.

I had to Google, I've never watched peaky blinders and my Tommy is older than the series anyway

Cat slater had 1 in eastenders a few months before mine was born so maybe people think he was named after that one 🤣

He's actually named after a family member

TimeToFlyNow · 21/01/2023 13:03

Although back to the op , I love Calab and he would have been named that if I could have talked exp into it . Unfortunately he didn't like it so I was never able to use it. It's still my favourite boys name

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2023 13:21

@SleepingStandingUp , thanks. I wouldn't have an opinion on Thomas really. It's one of those names that's always around. I know a Tom not short for Thomas and he has a lovely mother and an twat for a father. Tommy as a given name is very popular. See darkgreener.

The surge in popularity may be affected by the popularity of names like Alfie, Archie and Teddy, or it might be celebrity-inspired, and a well-known (and good-looking) TV character called Tommy was on Peaky Blinders.

Cillian doesn't fall into the Alfie, Archie, Teddy trend, and is Irish and has the 'is the C a K sound or a S sound?' issue, so will not have the same appeal.

It was the Tolomy spelling. If they'd spelt it Ptolemy, I'd not think the same

And tbf, it wasn't wrong either was it.
