Is this in the Kayden/Caiden/Jayden/Brayden camp?

I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

I didn't say anything other than those types of names aren't for me. Just as the name Caleb won't be for others.

Thanks for opinions!

I know what you mean and no. Those other names all seemed to be popular at once for a time.

daemonologie · 19/01/2023 06:39

With regards to PP...It's the kid out of American Gothic he was such a good little actor.

Bernadinetta · 19/01/2023 06:41

I think even the original Aidan isn’t in the same group as Jayden/Brayden/Cayden/Hayden/Okayden

Caleb is definitely fine

How about Rueben? That’s a nice biblical name

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/01/2023 06:47

Caleb is fine, it’s not a rough name.

There is nothing wrong with the name Kayden/Jayden, except if you’re stuck up you’re own arse and believe you’re better than anyone else.

Yes I have a Cayden, no I am not a council estate dwelling chainsmoker with 100” tv’s living off of benefits.

People really need to get over themselves, honestly it’s a name and just for reference, my ds has never had a bad school report or been given an asbo, however Henry, Joseph and Thomas were all recently in trouble for stealing Kai’s phone.

There's nothing wrong with living in social housing. What a snobbish, judgemental statement!

@naminggaming Caleb seems popular amongst the American religious right, which puts me off it.

This. As is the Kayden/Jaydon/Braydon type.

Okayden 👍🏻

What a revolting snobby thread

Yep

Aphrathestorm · 19/01/2023 09:07

It makes me think of the evil preacher in Buffy.

Not a nice association.

Something like Jonah or Joshua works better.

I think you have completely missed the point of my comment.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 19/01/2023 11:24

Personally I hate the name Caleb, but it doesn't make me think of Kayden/Jayden etc.

I like Aiden. And actually prefer most of the - den names to Caleb because I find the "leb" sound ugly.

FayCarew · 19/01/2023 11:42

@LoafingLina , your Cayden has brothers called Henry, Joseph and Thomas?

RuthW · 19/01/2023 12:19

Caleb is fine.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 19/01/2023 13:26

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 17:13

why not Mab-el in the same way you want to pronounce Cal-eb?

You're right - phonetically they should both be pronounced Cal and Mab

But English is a funny language with lots of inconsistencies

There are a million examples of words that make Kay-leb a completely unsurprising pronounciation.

Table
Cable
Able
Label
Fable

Etc.

None of these start with Cal though... Can you think of examples where Cal is actually pronounced Cayl ?!

I can't think of any ... calendar, calibrate, calorie, calculate etc etc

So I DO find the Cayleb pronunciation unintuitive

Pinkdafodils · 19/01/2023 13:40

In other words I cannot think of examples where Cal is pronounced Cayl

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2023 13:49

@Pinkdafodils , fad->fade, rag->rage, pal->pale, wad->wade
The addition of e changes the a.

Pinkdafodils · 19/01/2023 13:53

I understand, but can you think of actual words that pronounce cal... as cayl?

As in words like calendar or calorie but pronounced as caylender or caylorie?

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 19/01/2023 14:03

@naminggaming. I think the fact that a couple of PPs have Cayden/Jaydens and also Calebs suggests that it's going to be one of Those Names.

PMSL at Okayden @Alloftheboys.

@LoafingLina How very snobby your first diatribe is.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2023 14:22

@Pinkdafodils , calyx. There used to be a John Lewis shop called Caleys.
Can't think of any others, but Caleb is from the hebrew, and is pronounced differently depending on the language.

Palmfrond · 19/01/2023 14:37

I think the problem with Caleb (and it’s pronunciation) is that it’s a name that is a recent import from the US, as are Jayden, Hayden, Okayden (Mytrainisdelayeden?) etc, which suggests that popular culture (TV, pop music, movies) is your primary reference for your personal culture, and people will pick up on that, usually in judgemental ways.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/01/2023 14:40

Well you like it and you don't like those so obviously it isn't in the same camp 🙄 unless you're saying there's something wrong with those names and you're worried others will put caleb in the same category, why does it matter if a name you do like sounds like another you don't like?

I love Lilith and Lily and Liliana. I hate Lilian.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2023 13:49

Depends where you fall on saying scone

TangledWebOfDeception · 19/01/2023 14:45

One would have to be really quite culturally and historically unaware to think that Caleb is a recent import from the U.S. in the same vein as Jayden et al!

Perhaps in terms of renewed popularity, or influenced somewhat by trends as is always the way, but in terms of history and heritage it's absolutely not in that cohort of names.
