Is this in the Kayden/Caiden/Jayden/Brayden camp?

I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

The same reason scone is Scown. Because it is. There's a reason as in the Magic E but it's English so that rule doesn't have to extend everywhere because then phonics would be easy and the hair of 4-6 yo parents would be less grey 😁😁

Ha ha yes Smile

I'm not English so thanks for explaining how to pronounce Scone too.

DillDanding · 19/01/2023 19:16

No! It’s a lovely, cool name and poles apart from those awful ones you listed.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2023 19:20

Scone is pronounced 'Sgone like in it's gone.

You should do an AMA and people can tell yo u their kids names and you can fortell their future 🙄

On our NCT course the teacher found out that DH and I are both schoolteachers and tried to push us really, really hard to tell us what we considered to be ‘naughty’ names. It got very awkward, as of course we were never going to answer and she just wouldn’t drop it.

@TangledWebOfDeception
No explanation necessary, I can see that you are totally cool with it and a chill person and also a great repository of historical facts.

And also congrats on not having a kid named Caleb.

No one pronounces it Ca-leb. Not if you're British anyway.

It's often pronounced Ca-leb in Wales.

I was just thinking that.

How do you get a g sound in scone?

Or do you mean it rhymes with gone? Only if you're wrong 😂

Franticbutterfly · 20/01/2023 07:57

No.

She hasn't attacked other names. She didn't say "Thomas is a phone thief's name", she said Thomas has stolen Kai's phone.

I think we can use our inference skills on this one to work out what was meant.

MotivateMe · 20/01/2023 10:19

My sons name is Caleb and I love it! At the time we were choosing between Hebrew/ traditional English names like George etc… I love the meaning of the name too. I do think it will become a popular name now but that doesn’t bother me. Go for it if you like it!!

caggie2 · 20/01/2023 10:20

Why do people refer to it as a trendy name? Caleb is really low down the rankings and isn't showing an incline. Last peak was in 2004. It's definitely not a trendy or popular name, atleast in the UK.

In other words I cannot think of examples where Cal is pronounced Cayl

Caleb is not an English name. It is a Hebrew name

therefore it is not pronounced in an “English” way.

The Hebrew pronunciation is different to the English pronunciation.

That you can't draw inferences from a name, not that anyone called Thomas is a dick.

You can draw inferences. Certain names appeal to certain types of people.

Scone is pronounced scon. If I went into a shop and asked for a scown, (like ‘own’) it would sound really pretentious!

There's nowt posh about a scown.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/01/2023 11:25

I think people who think scown is posh must say sc-oh-wn rather than sc-ow-n

watcherintherye · 20/01/2023 11:29

Where are the non-posh scowns to be found? I’m S/SW border and would definitely sound posh!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/01/2023 11:30

'scown' is a terribly confusing phonetic spelling. It looks like it should rhyme with 'brown' and have the same sound as 'scowl'.

Depending on your region, 'scone' rhymes with 'gone' or 'bone'.

I didn’t have much of an opinion on Cayden as a name, but you have put me right off it. You seem gobby and judgemental about names.

Quite the opposite actually, what other people call their child is none of business.
I don’t judge people based on their names I judge them on their character.

It’s also very funny that people are piling on me, calling me a snob and gobby yet having now read through this whole thread, I’ve seen more than one comment calling the name chavvy, how God awful it is and that children with the those names are basically the lowest of the low.

A name is not the only thing that makes you who you are.

Again, as I’ve already said I love my Ds’s name he was born 8 weeks early and spent nearly 3 months in Nicu fighting for his life, which is why I chose the name as it means fighter, so when you constantly hear people slating your child’s name it gets a bit boring.
