I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

Okayden

This is why I love Mumsnet 😁 * *

No, I wouldn't say so. Old Testament boys' names are having a moment so it is quite trendy but it is most definitely a 'proper' traditional name. I would categorise it more with Noah / Eli / Elijah / Isaac / Ezra / Reuben etc.

I would agree with this. I'm not personally a massive fan of any of the names listed (except maybe Reuben) but there's nothing wrong with them and no connotations particularly.

MyrtleTheTurtleQueen · 18/01/2023 14:47

Well yes, the sound of caleb is very similar to cayden etc.

There is nothing wrong with the name Kayden/Jayden, except if you’re stuck up you’re own arse and believe you’re better than anyone else.

Yes I have a Cayden, no I am not a council estate dwelling chainsmoker with 100” tv’s living off of benefits.

People really need to get over themselves, honestly it’s a name and just for reference, my ds has never had a bad school report or been given an asbo, however Henry, Joseph and Thomas were all recently in trouble for stealing Kai’s phone.

Triggered much? Why so defensive if you are 100% at peace with your name choice?

It's more this kind of thing:

And this is exactly why there is nothing wrong with Kayden/Jayden type names.

Jayden sounds similar to Jadon, a biblical name. Maybe OP could spell Caleb Kayleb to be more inclusive.

Topseyt123 · 18/01/2023 14:54

Caleb is a great name. Stop overthinking it.

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 18/01/2023 15:02

Great if your last name is Dingle.

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 15:04

As long as it's pronounced Cah-den and not Cay-den

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 15:05

I mean Ca-Leb and not Cay-leb

MarshaBradyo · 18/01/2023 15:06

Alloftheboys · 18/01/2023 14:34

Okayden 👍🏻

😬

Beamur · 18/01/2023 15:06

I'd say it's both.
I know of one Caleb whose siblings/cousins have names similar to those you mentioned but it's in itself quite a neutral name.
Isn't the funny farmhand in the Jeremy Clarkson programme a Caleb, although it might be with a K.
I think Caleb is similar to names like Seth - traditional sounding and old school in a good way.

No one pronounces it Ca-leb. Not if you're British anyway.

caramac04 · 18/01/2023 15:08

Caleb is nice and spelt correctly. If you like it then use it

Because I'm sure it can become tiresome seeing your child's name described as being, or implied as being 'chavvy'. As with the rest of MN, snobbery and class obsession is in abundant supply on the baby name boards.

SummaLuvin · 18/01/2023 15:12

LoafingLina · 18/01/2023 14:32

I didn’t say you did, however the implication is there.

exactly, you don't see threads popping up with parents 'worrried' about their darling little ones names being associated with the likes of Arthur/Henry/Wilfred...

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/01/2023 15:16

You will see those names called boring, old-fashioned and overused though. I mean the baby name board wouldn't exist if everyone said, "I like it" would it?

sure. but the classist digs are going to smart more than the 'that's a boring name' comments.

Pearlygates · 18/01/2023 15:19

I have a Caleb. You're overthinking it.

TBF I hate those names because they're samey and nothingy. In DD's school the 'bad' boys have boring Old Testament name, boring Arabic name and made-up hipster name. The two with these kind of names are OK.

I agree that the class stuff can be a bit much on here.

Excusemegreentea · 18/01/2023 15:22

No

Underroad · 18/01/2023 16:04

Absolutely not, unless you spell it with a K at which point it somehow switches over.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 18/01/2023 16:10

SummaLuvin · 18/01/2023 15:12

But you do get people asking if they are ‘pretentious’ or ‘try-hard’.

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 16:11

Caleb isn't pronounced Cay-leb? Surely it's Cal-eb? Like Calendar not Caylender?! Confused

Have only ever heard it said with the cay-leb pronunciation.
