Is this in the Kayden/Caiden/Jayden/Brayden camp?

I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

It is my least favourite name after watching a horror film with an evil kid called Caleb. It still haunts me now

"Someone's at the door, Caleb" - American Gothic. Was that the one?

There is nothing wrong with the name Kayden/Jayden, except if you’re stuck up you’re own arse and believe you’re better than anyone else.

Yes I have a Cayden, no I am not a council estate dwelling chainsmoker with 100” tv’s living off of benefits.

People really need to get over themselves, honestly it’s a name and just for reference, my ds has never had a bad school report or been given an asbo, however Henry, Joseph and Thomas were all recently in trouble for stealing Kai’s phone.

Chill out, you're very defensive for someone secure in their name choice!

We are allowed to have whatever opinions we like on any names, and say them. I don't like the Jayden/Braiden/Kaiden set. You'll just have to live with the fact that other people have opinions different to yours.

OP, Caleb is more in the Jacob/Noah/Jonah set.

Caleb isn't pronounced Cay-leb? Surely it's Cal-eb? Like Calendar not Caylender?! Confused

It IS pronounced Cay-leb. Caylender isn't a word but yes, that's the sound.

I didn't say anything other than those types of names aren't for me. Just as the name Caleb won't be for others.

Thanks for opinions!

So if you like the name Caleb what difference does it make what others think of it or if it's similar to kayden/Jayden ????

TangledWebOfDeception · 18/01/2023 14:42

Okayden 👍🏻

OMG that made me laugh.

🤣🤣🤣

Yesthatismychildsigh · 18/01/2023 16:24

No, it definitely isn’t in the same camp as those names. It’s a lovely, old name.

I don't like the names Sylvie, Miranda, or Freya (nor do I like Kayden for that matter) but I wouldn't be concerned that children with any of those names might be associated with my child. There seems to be a little bit of nuance which is going over you head.

Caleb isn't pronounced Cay-leb? Surely it's Cal-eb? Like Calendar not Caylender?! Confused

It's pronounced KAY-LEB

The welsh pronounce it Cal-eb - Like Calender.

No one has ever called my boy Cal-eb except for a welsh nurse once, whom I corrected and she said that's how its usually pronounced in Wales apparently.

IForgotOurSong · 18/01/2023 16:29

I love the name Caleb and all the biblical names so much so my kids both have names bible names.

That said I also like the Kayden/Jayden names too, dunno what the problem is, to me they’re cool trendy names.

catsonahottinroof · 18/01/2023 16:32

I think it's a nice name and would also have pronounced it Cal-eb, but I do quite often get pronunciations wrong.
I wouldn't associate it with the other names you've listed, and I don't like Jayden or Brayden (never heard of this one), but I do think Caden is a nice name, only spelt like that though, wouldn't like Kayden.

If it’s important to you, the Cal-eb pronunciation is the more authentic for speakers of British English.
KAY-LEB is the American pronunciation.
It seems to be historically associated with dissenting Protestant groups, hence the American & Welsh connection, until reintroduced to England in the 80s/90s from America.

I've never heard it before but I just assumed that Cal sounds like Cal and eb like eb. Confused

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 16:50

I think Cal-eb sounds much nicer than Cay-leb personally

Triggered much? Why so defensive if you are 100% at peace with your name choice?

Not triggered, I just don’t like ignorance.

I also love my sons name as much now as I did when I gave it to him.

how do you pronounce Mabel?

Fleebeg · 18/01/2023 16:55

The Welsh do not pronounce it Cal like calendar. I’m Welsh and my DN is Caleb and no one has ever pronouced it any way other than Cay-leb.

I like it but it does fall into the same group as those to me. I know someone with twins Caleb and Caden so perhaps that’s why?!

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 16:57

In English probably Maybelle

In German or Spanish Mah-bel

I can live with the fact people have a different opinion and may not like a certain name. I can also live with the fact that my child’s name is disliked by many, as I chose a name that I liked and still do what I do not like nor agree with is the snobbery surrounding that.

In my family we have a variety of names with quite a few being biblical, in fact we have two Caleb’s a Ruben, Eli, Judah and a Jeremiah, none of those names I particularly like.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 18/01/2023 17:01

I have a Caleb. Pronounced Cay-leb. Although I do sometimes call him Cal-eb as one of his teachers called him that. And Cal-eeb.

I also have a Jayden. The horror! Luckily he knows his place, and has no ambitions to be a high court judge. I just roll my eyes at the judgy posts about his name - he's an adult now, never in trouble at school, has a good job.

Okayden made me laugh. Grin

It's this the end of Riley and Kaiden

What a revolting snobby thread

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 17:13

You're right - phonetically they should both be pronounced Cal and Mab

But English is a funny language with lots of inconsistencies
