Is this in the Kayden/Caiden/Jayden/Brayden camp?

I love the name Caleb and I'm aware it's a biblical name but I worry it sounds in the Kayden/Jayden etc name camp by sound and that isn't for me.

Please tell me I'm overthinking it!

why not Mab-el in the same way you want to pronounce Cal-eb?

You're right - phonetically they should both be pronounced Cal and Mab

But English is a funny language with lots of inconsistencies

no, they are pronounced correctly. For Caleb to be Cal-eb it would have to be spelt Calleb (and Mabel spelt Mabbel). Your example of Calendar is probably the oddity.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2023 17:29

English is nightmare thing.

Caleb is a nice biblical name, like Noah, Jacob, Elijah, Ezra, Joseph, etc. if you don't mind it being a religious name I would go for it.

And no, not at all like the Kayden/Jayden/Brayden

shewolfsout · 18/01/2023 17:34

Apparently it means loyal, whole hearted and faithful which is a good meaning. Some of the Bible names can have stories that are a bit iffy! But Caleb (Kay-leb) is alright on that front!

Boringcookingquestion · 18/01/2023 17:34

There’s nothing wrong with Caleb (or Kayden, Jayden etc) but where I live it’s definitely in the same camp. I actually know a Kayden and Caleb sibling set.

Seriously though, if you like it then use it. You’re the one who’s going to be saying it everyday so you should pick something you love.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 18/01/2023 17:37

No. Caleb is not in the same group as the names you listed.

Hmmm, no.
Or do pronounce palace “pay-lace”, telegraph “tee-legraph” (tee-lay-grayph?), etc etc.
Anyway, bottom line is, pronounce Caleb how you want.

cravingtoblerone · 18/01/2023 19:00

I'd put it with other old school biblical names tbh. Eg Elijah, Ezra, Isaac, Moses, Abraham, Joseph etc. Not a name I'd choose personally but nothing wrong with it.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/01/2023 19:03

No. Caleb is lovely.

No one pronounces it Ca-leb. Not if you're British anyway.

Are Welsh-speakers not British now?

MissingMoominMamma · 18/01/2023 19:07

I knew it was going to be Caleb! So I suppose that gives you your answer, at least as far as I’m concerned.

It’s actually my least favourite boys’ name, and yet the only one I know is quite nice.

He will be your child though, not mine, and you must like it to be considering it.

Okayden 👍🏻

Chef’s kiss to you 😂

Spidey66 · 18/01/2023 19:10

I don't have kids, but my imaginary son would be Caleb. (My imaginary daughter would be either Eleanor or Rhiannon if you're interested.)

I love OKayden!

Lost123454 · 18/01/2023 19:13

Caleb is nice. The rest are chavvy

Christ no. The bottom line is that english words dont' follow exact rules and there are many variations.
That doesn't mean you can pronounce a name anyway you like. That's how we have idiots inventing entirely new pronounciations that don't make any sense.

Nooo you don't need a double L for sure t to be pronounced Cal!!

Calendar, caliphate, calibrate etc etc

Rickandmortified100 · 19/01/2023 06:00

Definitely not! It’s a biblical name. I love it.

MickeyMouseShithouse · 19/01/2023 06:09

As long as it isn’t Caleb-Mae.. or Mai.

Mydogatemypurse · 19/01/2023 06:23

Pinkdafodils · 18/01/2023 16:11

Caleb isn't pronounced Cay-leb? Surely it's Cal-eb? Like Calendar not Caylender?! Confused

Absolutely not.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 19/01/2023 06:27

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/01/2023 13:54

It is my least favourite name after watching a horror film with an evil kid called Caleb. It still haunts me now

Me too. I've always liked the name, and then this programme freaked me out.

My horror was eased once Kings of Leon came along with their very beautiful Caleb.

What was the programme?
