Me and my partner have already decided on the name for one of our twin boys and he’s going to be called Ambrose.

we wanted opinions on which name for a bother would go best and we’re open for suggestions, on our list so far we have

Balthazar
Magnus
Oswald
Thaddeus
Solomon

Many Thanks

I love Ambrose. Of the names you've suggested Magnus is my clear favourite. I like Oswald sonically, but the Moseley connotation is too strong. Thaddeus and Solomon are both just fine to me, and Balthazar for me is one of very few names that has almost no redeeming features.

I think they all 'go' just fine, and if I were you, I would just choose my favourite than worry if Thaddeus and Ambrose sound more cohesive than Solomon and Ambrose. Names you might also like are Casimir, Gideon, Hector, Lucien, Lysander, Orlando, Peregrine, Raphael.

Ambrose and Balthazar!

Bram and Bal.

I think Solomon from that list is the best one. You need something a bit old-fashioned. Enoch? Though maybe not the best association.

Why is Ambrose shortened to Bram though?

Qwill · 18/05/2022 19:57

Curtly?! Only kidding, I think Solomon works well. Not that they have to be in the same vein, but Magnus, Thaddeus, and Balthazar sound very different to the others, each other, and your son - I do like the names though.

Qwill · 18/05/2022 20:00

Walter?

Im not a fan of Enoch
and we would shorten it to Bram as we both liked the name but didn’t like any other forms so we took it off the list then we started looking at nicknames for Ambrose and my partner suggested Bram and it sort of just stuck

I like Lysander (Parter said no) and Peregrine

I love the way Ambrose and Augustus sound but u don’t know if I want matching letters seen as they’re identical and they’re also a chance they could be born in august as I’m due end of July

Would your partner accept Leander if not Lysander?

pantherrose · 18/05/2022 20:37

Solomon without hesitation.

Classica · 18/05/2022 20:39

Love Solomon from your list.

The Ambrose I know has a brother called Cornelius. They're both in their 90s I think.

Starbeach · 18/05/2022 20:42

I'm sorry I hate them all including Ambrose

Qwill · 18/05/2022 20:42

Lysander is beautiful, any chance he’ll change his mind? I really wanted Florian, but my partner vetoed that, still a bit annoyed!!

PrettyLittleCryer · 18/05/2022 20:44

The only thing if you're set on Bram is you really can't guarantee nicknames. You know what you'll call him - but he could get all sorts of other variations from others.

Ambrose and Elliot
Ambrose and Edmond
Dashiell and Ambrose
Thaddeus and Ambrose

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/05/2022 20:45

How does Ambrose shorten to Bram? I thought Abraham shortened to Bram.

I have nothing helpful to add, just wanted to say that I LOVE Ambrose. I wanted it for my son but I wasn’t brave enough haha!
