Well, I think it's a lovely name, so I can't help you with that, but names are a "two yeses" deal so either of you gets the power to veto. He's allowed to say no to your fave, you're allowed to say no to his.

Do you like the Prudence bit?

Giggorata · 17/05/2022 10:50

Did he choose the name Prudence as well, or was it your choice, or a joint one?
Because it is obviously a bit much to choose both, without any discussion or negotiation.
If you chose the first name and he the second, I guess it's fair… my partner named DS2 after his father, a name I am on the dislike side of indifferent to, but at least it's his second name, and I chose the first name.
ideally, you should discuss it more and find ones you both like. Why is he so keen on a name that there is no obvious connection with?

MolliciousIntent · 17/05/2022 10:51

Names like Prudence...

Value names like...

Patience
Faith
Hope
Joy
Constance
Verity
Mercy
Clemency

Names with the same "feel"

Rosemary
Judith
Edith
Emmeline
Ruth

MolliciousIntent · 17/05/2022 10:52

I don't see the issue with Sunita as a middle name, middle names are completely irrelevant, so if I were you I'd focus on the "Prudence" thing.

PeskyRooks · 17/05/2022 10:52

I like Prudence!
But could have Constance? Or Cadence?
Anita instead of Sunita?

This is despicable advice and would 100% be a gutshot to their marriage.

Fenella123 · 17/05/2022 10:53

Stick a couple more middle names in there to dilute the effect. And indeed a first name if you're not a fan of Prudence.
Does he have any wonderful female relatives with good first names?
"It would be wonderful to name her Elisabeth after your great aunt" etc

Beamur · 17/05/2022 10:54

Prudence is quite nice and Sunita is too. Together they're a curious choice. You don't tend to use both though.
Most people you don't actually know their middle names. I know a few kids who have names more associated with different cultures to their own immediate ones (nods to grandparents etc) but with no connection at all, does seem a bit odd.

When he pushes a self grown human out of a vagina or via surgery then he can bestow whatever hideous name he wants onto them.

But seriously - no one should have to use a name they hate. If one of you hates it, it comes off the table.

If he cannot offer alternatives by the time the baby needs registering then he fmgoes with whatever of your choices he doesn't hate.

PeskyRooks · 17/05/2022 10:58

I'm not keen on Margot Nova to be fair. Sounds a bit like a city in Eastern Europe

DeflatedBeachball · 17/05/2022 11:00

@willgrahamlecter i agree with Will, the name is hideous in my opinion and I'm not lumbering that on my child, he is being quite forceful and manipulating me into choosing the name, so i think the idea is great to register DD with a different name so he doesn't know.

Okay, good it's a really ugly name but I didn't want to be rude about if that was your favourite and you just disliked the Sunita

Is it rude to say that advocating for the deliberate exclusion of a child's father from their registration on the basis of a difference of opinion is despicable? Because that just feels like fact to me. They're married, he has equal rights to register the baby, would you think it acceptable for him to "not let her in the room" and give her no input on the baby's name?

I'd only do this if you're happy with your marriage being over.

Penelope (Penny)
