Thoughts on Lupin for a boy?

My husband and I have loved this name since conceiving our first son. We really love flower names for boys, Lupin is edgy and unique it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'. Could be shortened to Lu or Louie. We chickened out of using it last time because we got a few negative comments and thought it was a bit TOO unusual but on the other hand it could be paired with a very ordinary middle name that he could use if he preferred when older. I found a post on here from a few years ago with horrendously negative feedback so I'm not expecting much here but I thought I'd put it out there again anyway to test the waters! So what d'ya reckon? Any chance you're sending him to prep and public school? Because the name wouldn't have any issues there!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/05/2022 12:42

👍for all the other Diary of a Nobody fans! Laugh out loud funny after well over a century. Well done to the Grossmith brothers.

DameCelia

Thank you! I realised as I pressed post that, from the context of the remarks about Mrs P., that it must be a separate work.
I love Keith Waterhouse and DOAN so sounds well worth investing in.

You're forgiven the spoiler alert; would have been much more of a spoiler if he wasn't Smile

I’m afraid privately educated boys are just as likely to kick the shit out of some poor kid with an odd name as any other boys.

I’d think of the flower, Harry Potter and Arsene Lupin in that order, then decide you were probably Harry Potter obsessives who wrote fan fic and could talk at length about your patronus. Nothing wrong with that but edgy it’s not.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. The type of people who would say ‘this is little Lupin. Obviously we’re a huffledor family and we all ship romione. Want to see my tumblr?’

The child’s bedroom would have one of those signs I hate that would say something like ‘a Jedi like daddy, unless I get my hogwarts letter like mummy.’ I just find it a bit cringey. Like advertising your fandom through your child.

The complete wrong impression, no way our kids would be privately educated! Noted that you're grouping it with the Rupert's and Sebastians though! suppose there is a bit of a Rupert vibe. Lol.

Hahaha. This makes me want to vomit! All these fandom/Tumblr comments are the only ones completely putting me off. So cringe worthy!

Is your surname Pooter?

I feel like this is a joke amongst the rest of these replies!!?! Lol.

Well I quite like it, but I wouldn't give it to a child.
Be threw around names like Wolf, Bear, Tiger and Woody for DS1, but then gave him a very popular boys name, in reality.
He is 14 and says it is one is the few things we got right.

crumpet · 14/05/2022 15:42

Lupin either Pooter or pretty flowers.

Go with Lupo (Italian/Spanish for Wolf) or just Wolf if that’s the vibe you are looking for.

RuthW · 14/05/2022 18:01

I know a girl Lupin. Why would you give a boy a flower name?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/05/2022 18:28

Waaaaay too Harry Potter. And this is from someone who's daughter has Hermione as one of her middle names.... 😳

Also, you should be aware that there is a huge amount of XXX-rated Harry Potter fan fiction based around a romantic / sexual relationship between Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. Like, a huuuuuuuge amount and much of it is not for the faint hearted. Google "wolfstar" and be prepared!

dont want to reveal how I know that

Synchrony · 14/05/2022 18:50

My first thought would be that you are HP fans, which is OK because so am I. And Remus is nice.

Second thought, unfortunately, was that it sounds a bit like lupus.

SecretVictoria · 14/05/2022 18:54

IsadoraQuagmire · 14/05/2022 11:32

It's not a nickname, it's his middle name (first name William, known as Willie) He tells his parents he's now using Lupin as his first name when he turns up at their house after getting sacked from his job in Oldham. I'm a HUGE fan of Lupin Pooter, and absolutely love the name. I'm also a huge Harry Potter fan, but would never even think of Remus when I hear the name Lupin, only Lupin Pooter.

Ah, thank you. It’s a while since I read it. Might have to dust my copy off tonight!

alionthatneedscourage · 14/05/2022 18:58

Ridiculous name.
I dig Remus though. One of the mythical founders of Rome. Suckled from a wolf to survive, alongside his twin brother Romulus. (Still got a Wolfy theme, indirectly)

I even like Wolf as a name.

Supersimkin2 · 14/05/2022 19:00

No.

not as yooneek as you think.

Firebird83 · 14/05/2022 20:55

It’s awful. Sounds like a dog’s name.

MissCrowley · 14/05/2022 21:26

@MaggieMama I'm actually being genuine. I do like it. But then I can't stand all the traditional boring names that everyone seems to like on here.
My son has an unusual name and it really suits him. I don't really care if other people don't like it.

iheartmybeachhut · 15/05/2022 10:45

Not everyone on here likes 'boring traditional names' on mn OP but they don't name their dc like a pet either. There is no need to be snipey you asked a question and the hive mind has answered,
Your baby, your choice but your sons future potential embarrassment.

OnaBegonia · 15/05/2022 11:00

Playful and flower type name might be cute in a wee toddler but not 30yr old brickie, you're naming him for life not just childhood.

SpringBadger · 15/05/2022 14:10

StillWeRise · 14/05/2022 09:58

I think he is the son in Diary of a Nobody which is a very funny book but it's not an association I'd want with my son

Exactly this! I love that Lupin but it's not really namesake material. I believe the son's real name was Willie, but he jacked in his bank job and decided to use his mother's unusual maiden name as his first name instead, to the embarrassment of his father.

I think younger people would associate it with Harry Potter and assume you were a megafan of the werewolf character.

It's a bit silly sounding, I think. Maybe middle name?

Same, I should have read the full thread! Love that there are other Lupin fans (the prodigal son, not the name) 😁
