Thoughts on Lupin for a boy?

My husband and I have loved this name since conceiving our first son. We really love flower names for boys, Lupin is edgy and unique it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'. Could be shortened to Lu or Louie. We chickened out of using it last time because we got a few negative comments and thought it was a bit TOO unusual but on the other hand it could be paired with a very ordinary middle name that he could use if he preferred when older. I found a post on here from a few years ago with horrendously negative feedback so I'm not expecting much here but I thought I'd put it out there again anyway to test the waters! So what d'ya reckon? It sounds like lupus. Sorry, some people try to be trendy with kids names. But some just sound silly.

larkstar · 14/05/2022 11:30

Sounds like Putin.
Definitely not.

Maurepas · 14/05/2022 11:31

No - No, No, NO! Self indulgent or what?!

I think of Diary of a Nobody but it’s a nickname that they use for their son. Same as ‘Dear Lupin’, neither actually named their son Lupin. It’s terrible as an actual name.

It's not a nickname, it's his middle name (first name William, known as Willie) He tells his parents he's now using Lupin as his first name when he turns up at their house after getting sacked from his job in Oldham. I'm a HUGE fan of Lupin Pooter, and absolutely love the name. I'm also a huge Harry Potter fan, but would never even think of Remus when I hear the name Lupin, only Lupin Pooter.

Loopy Lupin. Don't do it.

KittenKong · 14/05/2022 11:38

Makes me think of Diary of a Nobody.

knowinglesseveryday · 14/05/2022 11:41

No

Princessoftheuniverse · 14/05/2022 11:43

Is this a joke?

TheLadyDIdGood · 14/05/2022 11:43

Loopy lupin will be his nickname at school.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 14/05/2022 11:45

It's kind of cute but my first thought was Lupus

Ishacoco · 14/05/2022 11:51

I quite like it. I like the way it sounds as a name.

SunnyShiner · 14/05/2022 11:52

I'd think you were huge Harry Potter fans

ColdApril · 14/05/2022 11:52

I'd assume you were Harry Potter mega-fans and then feel sorry for the child to be saddled with a fandom name and one that sounds so much like a disease at that.

Don't do it.

CambsAlways · 14/05/2022 11:52

Not in a trillion years, it sounds like a cartoon character

DameCelia · 14/05/2022 11:52

@IsadoraQuagmire
I don't know if it's an age thing or a cultural references thing but I immediately thought of Lupin Pooter, Harry Potter didn't even cross my mind.
"In fact, if you 'Willie'd' me in Oldham no one would know who you were talking about" (or something like that).
Btw if you haven't read it, Mrs Pooter's diary is excellent!

Marcipex · 14/05/2022 11:56

I love Harry Potter but I’d still say no.
In fact, NO NO NO NO don’t.
it’s awful.

Oleander is clever, a op suggested that. Like Oliver and Alexander combined.

@DameCelia Well, I'm 25, but have been reading Diary of a Nobody at least once a year since I was about 11😊HILARIOUS! Yes, I've read Mrs Pooter's Diary too, but not for ages, never had my own copy, found it in a library. Very funny!

EmilyBolton · 14/05/2022 12:01

The middle ground is the Middle name and would be acceptable…if he hates it he can be just a mysterious “L” or no middle name. If he likes it he can enjoy using it and explains the background.

donchafeellikecrying · 14/05/2022 12:03

Edgy or unique = downmarket or pretentious

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 14/05/2022 12:04

It's abysmal. And definitely not edgy.

And I don't get the
it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'
How does that make it masculine? 50% of wolves are female!

SorryPardonWhat · 14/05/2022 12:09

I don't know the Harry Potter connection. My first thought sadly was the nickname Loopy Lupin.

DonAlfonso · 14/05/2022 12:14

I’d think of the flower, Harry Potter and Arsene Lupin in that order, then decide you were probably Harry Potter obsessives who wrote fan fic and could talk at length about your patronus. Nothing wrong with that but edgy it’s not.

LaMarschallin · 14/05/2022 12:31

Oleander is clever, a op suggested that. Like Oliver and Alexander combined.

I wondered about that; still a poisonous plant though, but may not matter.

Isn't "Diary of a Nobody" by "Mr" not "Mrs" Pooter?

LaMarschallin · 14/05/2022 12:32

Ooh! Sorry - just realised they're two different things Blush

DameCelia · 14/05/2022 12:35

@LaMarschallin
Diary of a Nobody is 'by' Mr Pooter.
Keith Waterhouse wrote Mrs Pooter's Diary telling the story from her point of view (spoiler alert: Mr Pooter really was as much of an ass as he appeared).
