Thoughts on Lupin for a boy?

My husband and I have loved this name since conceiving our first son. We really love flower names for boys, Lupin is edgy and unique it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'. Could be shortened to Lu or Louie. We chickened out of using it last time because we got a few negative comments and thought it was a bit TOO unusual but on the other hand it could be paired with a very ordinary middle name that he could use if he preferred when older. I found a post on here from a few years ago with horrendously negative feedback so I'm not expecting much here but I thought I'd put it out there again anyway to test the waters! So what d'ya reckon? To me it's no different than naming a child something like Olympia, a name which I also think is horrible many liked on here 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don't get the MN handbook on which names are acceptable

MindPalace · 14/05/2022 10:10

I think of Diary of a Nobody, and wouldn’t have made the HP connection. As I love the book, I would quite like the name - the boy in the story isn’t great, but the story is very funny.

TheFlis12345 · 14/05/2022 10:12

Kids will call him Loopy. Please don’t do that to the poor boy.

LaMarschallin · 14/05/2022 10:17

You don't mention Harry Potter, but I'm sceptical that you'd have thought of it if it wasn't for those books.

Lupin is edgy

it really isn't.

Also agree with this.

wobblyweasel · 14/05/2022 10:18

Hearing the name, all I could think of was the Monty Python Dennis Moore sketch - showing my age here! Definitely not a name I’d call a child, especially a boy.

HeadNorth · 14/05/2022 10:19

You are naming a human being, not a pet.

GMH1974 · 14/05/2022 10:20

Please don't

JaninaDuszejko · 14/05/2022 10:23

If you like the wolf connection Remus is a much better name, although obviously it still has the HP connection but at least a lot of people will think of the founding myth of Rome as well.

iheartmybeachhut · 14/05/2022 10:26

He'll be potentially teased horribly over this name, loopy lupin has a ring about tbh. You might love it but it's not really fair on a child especially a boy and goodness knows how he'd deal with it as a grown man🤔
Sad but true as a pp said you are naming a child not a pet.

cloudylemonade13 · 14/05/2022 10:27

I think it's a nice name. If you're giving birth to a rabbit or a horse. Sorry.

WilsonMilson · 14/05/2022 10:28

Please don’t saddle your son with a name like this, can you imagine him as a teenager with a name like Lupin? It’s cruel, and frankly batshit.

CorsicaDreaming · 14/05/2022 10:32

I can imagine him being called Loopy Lupin at school.

I wouldn't do it to my DS...

CorsicaDreaming · 14/05/2022 10:33

@iheartmybeachhut - bingo! I'd posted after just reading the first few posts and hadn't seen yours... Great minds think alike Grin

AnGofsMum · 14/05/2022 10:37

Please don’t! Poor boy.

Rainbowqueeen · 14/05/2022 10:37

i wouldn’t do it.

he will be teased. Either go with Louie or something else entirely

Kanaloa · 14/05/2022 10:37

I’d think you were hardcore Harry Potter fans and would find it a bit cringey. Like calling your child Sherlock or something.

Would you like to be called Lupin? Like genuinely, would you like to walk into your new job and say ‘hey, I’m Lupin. Yeah like Lupus and the Harry Potter character. Yeah.’

Kanaloa · 14/05/2022 10:39

I do like Harry Potter by the way - no hate here! Just whenever I hear people say they want to name their child an unusual name from a ‘fandom’ I think ‘are you a 15 year old with a tumblr blog?’ It seems embarrassing to me.

One of the 14 recognised allergens isn't it?

SatinHeart · 14/05/2022 10:40

I don't love flower names for boys and I don't think it's edgy, sorry.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 14/05/2022 10:40

Yeah....it's not edgy.

It's ridiculous.

PupInAPram · 14/05/2022 10:46

Change one of your names to Lupin by deed poll, then give your poor son a name he can carry through school without wincing at every lesson register. That way everyone's a winner.

Good point. All parents who want an ‘edgy’ name should be made to go out and use it for themselves for a few days first. See the weird looks they get & how annoying it is having to spell it out over the phone (if it’s one with a unique spelling).

ditalini · 14/05/2022 10:47

It's definitely not "edgy". It's also not unique.

It feels like a small, shy name. Something that an elf or a fairy would be called in an old Enid Blyton book.

fairytwinkletastic · 14/05/2022 10:48

Lupin is a no from me.Would get bullied. Loopy Lupin etc. Kids are cruel.
