Thoughts on Lupin for a boy?

My husband and I have loved this name since conceiving our first son. We really love flower names for boys, Lupin is edgy and unique it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'. Could be shortened to Lu or Louie. We chickened out of using it last time because we got a few negative comments and thought it was a bit TOO unusual but on the other hand it could be paired with a very ordinary middle name that he could use if he preferred when older. I found a post on here from a few years ago with horrendously negative feedback so I'm not expecting much here but I thought I'd put it out there again anyway to test the waters! So what d'ya reckon? Good grief, no.

HappyAsASandboy · 24/05/2022 14:08

Makes me think of Lapin, French for rabbit. Then I correct myself and think no, it's just similar. But I go through that thought process every time I see the word ...

Reading the comments here I am starting to understand what is wrong in this country.... Brexit, England being one of the worst countries for bullying in schools (and workspaces etc.)....

Lupin is a beautiful name. Maybe it's because I'm not originally from the UK, but my only association was from its Latin/Roman roots, but I could also see it fitting well in French.

This reminds me of the time I suggested at work that I may call my daughter Pia, which I thought was unproblematic, only to be told my child would be teased, because there is "pee" in the name (and for months every suggestion I made received similar comments).

I am starting to think it doesn't matter what name you choose, people are almost looking for a reason to be mean. Maybe instead of putting so much effort into trying to avoid ridicule, people should educate the next generation to celebrate difference!

THIS!
No matter what name it is kids will always find ways to pick on other kids. Probably thanks to adults like in these comments.

Lupin is a lovely name, the flower comes to mind, and the French last name.
And these days there are so many kids with none typical names that by the time he is in school it might not matter as much as you think it will. Also, countries and cultures are no longer stuck in their own bubbles, the world has become quite multicultural with "unusual" names all over.

Makes me think of Diary of a Nobody.

TenoringBehind · 31/03/2024 11:55

Same! Reading it at the moment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/03/2024 12:25

I like the actualsound of it, but It sounds like an incurable disease.

Sbishka · 31/03/2024 12:30

I wouldn't do it, for 3 reasons:

  1. The nickname Loopy
  2. it makes me think of lupus
  3. Harry Potter - people are ok right now with HP names but I predict that won't always be the case
All in all it seems it has the potential to be unfortunate.

I know a family where the two sisters have botanical names and gave all their children botanical names, which is lovely. They chose Briar for the only boy.

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 31/03/2024 12:31

God no,

Cedrick?

cheapskatemum · 31/03/2024 12:34

I'd think of the Monty Python lupin sketch first, then Remus Lupin in Harry Potter. Both positive connotations to me, plus I like the flowers, so I say go for it.

timoteigirl · 31/03/2024 13:00

It made me think of the flower Lupinus, not Harry Potter. The flower association would have made me assume it is a girl's name, not boy or unisex. Louie is a very TAME nick-name for Lupin. So Wolfie? Beowulf?

If it is mainly the sounds in the name Lupin that you like, not the meaning, I would say go for it.

Yogagrandmum · 31/03/2024 13:05

Ha ha ha

Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/03/2024 13:08

Sounds like loopy or lupus
so no for me

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 31/03/2024 13:17

Have recent posters noticed that this thread’s nearly 2 years old? Hopefully the little boy’s got a name by now.

Sailawaygirl · 31/03/2024 13:19

I love the sound on lupin but would worry its too close to loopy?
I was really keen on L names.

How about Linden?

Savoyafternoon · 31/03/2024 13:25

ZOMBIE.

I think this child now has a name!

timoteigirl · 31/03/2024 13:58

Sorry didn't notice. Hope @MaggieMama comes to update as all.

ginasevern · 31/03/2024 15:31

Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore riding through the glen.

Povertytrapped · 31/03/2024 18:49

@MaggieMama if you like wolf-related names, how about Rollo? It’s just come up for a delicious character in a film I’m watching and it means Famed Wolf 👌

Povertytrapped · 31/03/2024 18:51

Just seen this is a zombie thread…what did you call him @MaggieMama ?

fightingthedogforadonut · 31/03/2024 18:57

Made me think of Lupus, which is not a nice association

Pombearprincess · 31/03/2024 18:58

I'd think it was a girls name along with Daisy and Primrose.

FoxLady · 24/09/2024 17:33

Hey! I just wanted to say I LOVE the name Lupin a lot and we are seriously considering naming our child the same. I’m sorry for all the hateful blown-up comments you got here :( May I ask what you have chosen in the end? Did you dare to go for Lupin (maybe even as a second name of nickname) or did you skip it completely?
All the best! <3

BootballJoy · 24/09/2024 18:29

I actually quite like it. Assumed that you were fans of the Netflix series Lupin (about a modern day thief inspired by Gentleman Thief Arsène Lupin). I've dipped into Harry Potter but it wouldn't have been my first thought.
