Thoughts on Lupin for a boy?

My husband and I have loved this name since conceiving our first son. We really love flower names for boys, Lupin is edgy and unique it also has the more masculine meaning of 'pertaining to the wolf'. Could be shortened to Lu or Louie. We chickened out of using it last time because we got a few negative comments and thought it was a bit TOO unusual but on the other hand it could be paired with a very ordinary middle name that he could use if he preferred when older. I found a post on here from a few years ago with horrendously negative feedback so I'm not expecting much here but I thought I'd put it out there again anyway to test the waters! So what d'ya reckon? Love it.

It sounds a little like lupus to me.

Also, it is the flower that gives me the worst hayfever!

So I wouldn't choose it personally.

It does pass the easy to say and spell test though, which is always good.

LookingGlassMilk · 15/05/2022 14:22

I actually really like it. I wouldn't think of Harry Potter at all, I can't remember what random Harry Potter characters are called. I would just think of the flower.

I don't think it's girly either. Not all flower names are flowery.

Reading the comments here I am starting to understand what is wrong in this country.... Brexit, England being one of the worst countries for bullying in schools (and workspaces etc.)....

Lupin is a beautiful name. Maybe it's because I'm not originally from the UK, but my only association was from its Latin/Roman roots, but I could also see it fitting well in French.

This reminds me of the time I suggested at work that I may call my daughter Pia, which I thought was unproblematic, only to be told my child would be teased, because there is "pee" in the name (and for months every suggestion I made received similar comments).

I am starting to think it doesn't matter what name you choose, people are almost looking for a reason to be mean. Maybe instead of putting so much effort into trying to avoid ridicule, people should educate the next generation to celebrate difference!

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 23/05/2022 21:22

I quite like it. I wouldn't have thought of the Harry Potter connection. Nn Louie is lovely. Hyacinth was a boy (in Greek mythology) and that sounds far more feminine than Lupin.

ShandaLear · 23/05/2022 21:25

That will get shortened to Loopy three seconds after he starts school.

Rekorderlig88 · 23/05/2022 21:32

If. You love it that's all that matters

Lupin is a type of flower. Would you want that for a boy?

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/05/2022 23:14

I'd just assume you were HP mega fans.

You'd be better calling him Wolf. And that's a sentence I ever thought I'd write.

ladydimitrescu · 23/05/2022 23:16

Unless he's next in line for the defence of the dark arts teaching position, no.

Axahooxa · 23/05/2022 23:19

Yes! All anyone will think is ‘professor.’

etulosba · 23/05/2022 23:28

We really love flower names for boys,

How about Pansy instead?

Dashdotdotdash · 23/05/2022 23:38

Absolutely not. He would forever be known as Loopy. And Lupin in Diary of a Nobody was an absolute twat.

Jellybean23 · 23/05/2022 23:39

Lupin? Poor kid. He'll be called Loopy

No. What matters is if they love him. If they do, they won't name him Lupin.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2022 23:44

Makes me think of one of those long wooden poles for holding several toilet rolls.

How about Bogrod - not sure if it's an actual name, but it's very Tolkeinesque, if that kind of thing tickles your pickle.

pantjog · 23/05/2022 23:46

@HerbalEssences yes I’d definitely blame Brexit 🙄 and not the fact that the vast majority of posters (many of whom presumably voted Remain) think it’s a daft name for a boy.

calmlakes · 23/05/2022 23:50

Ok, I actually quite like it.
But I would think you were massive HP fans.
It is the reason I didn't go with Hermione as dd's name.

peaceinourtime · 24/05/2022 00:05

It's terrible he'll be called loopy Lupin or lupus. Don't do it.

BringbackSecretchocolatebar · 24/05/2022 00:13

Amdone123 · 14/05/2022 10:10

My first thought was lupus, then wolf.
Not for me.

Me too, terrible name

Dancer47 · 24/05/2022 00:17

It's not ''edgy''. Why on earth would you want to pick an ''edgy'' name for a child anyway?
He will be teased to death with that stupid name, which means nothing anyway.

I voted for Remain but that Brexit comment is perplexing to me. As if Europeans don't think certain names are bizarre or worthy of ridicule - "Kevinismus", anyone?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/05/2022 10:15

Little kids don't need 'edgy' names, and by the time they're teens and young adults, chances are a name a parent believes 'edgy' in 2022 will be seen by them as cringeworthy. I'm minded that 'Zowie Bowie' was fortunately given a dull as ditchwater first name and so happily is Duncan Jones. Grin

What did Frank Zappa name his kids? At least of your dad is a pop star you can get away with it (almost)

The interesting thing is, though, that people always cite his outlandish naming choices when unusual names are discussed. I don't really hear people mentioning his music at all these days - his kids' names are the main thing that made him stand out in perpetuity.

Personally, I'd rather have a name that people have heard of - not necessarily in the Top 10 every year - and recognise the name, associate it with me when we first meet and use it to call or refer to me, before talking about far more interesting things than my name. I'd hate to be like one of FZ's kids where nobody would get past my name, or even want to speak about anything else.

That reminds me of the old comedy spoof interview between Rowan Atkinson and Elton John, where Elton was there to discuss his music, life, fame and long glittering showbiz career and all Rowan was fixated on was his unusual name!
