Opinions on Ruth? Any bad associations or nicknames I should be aware of?

Would also like some middle name suggestions. Preferably something a bit more modern.

Thank you in advance. Smile

Lovely name! Not so common these days but classic.

AllTheCakes · 30/12/2021 11:25

I’ve always disliked Ruth, but I don’t know why.

MrsBungle · 30/12/2021 11:25

I find Ruth very harsh sounding.

strawberrymilk7 · 30/12/2021 11:55

I went to school with one, she was a lovely girl. I think it's a nice name.

VoyageInTheDark · 30/12/2021 11:59

I don't like it, not sure why. Sounds a bit harsh or someone quite prim and proper

Etinoxaurus · 30/12/2021 12:00

It does sound harsh and a little plain.
Sorry 😬

user1493494961 · 30/12/2021 12:02

Ruth Elizabeth.

Thevalley · 30/12/2021 12:02

Please don't!!!!! It's such an ugly, fugly, frumpy name. It's my middle name and I absolutely detest it.
No redeeming features.

Fireweeds · 30/12/2021 12:03

It’s a beautiful name :)

PlainJane1000 · 30/12/2021 12:05

It always makes me think of ruthless, which doesn't make it appealing to me sorry.

SunsetSmartmeter · 30/12/2021 12:05

I've always disliked the name too, no idea why as I've known a few people with the name & they've all been lovely. That said, I think it's one of those names that's due a return. I think if I met a tiny Ruth at a playgroup I'd think her parents had made a great choice.

Kitkat151 · 30/12/2021 12:06

I really like it...I’ve worked with 2 Ruths over the years....both lovely lovely people..... I know one little Ruth who’s 4.... she’s absolutely gorgeous.

Kitkat151 · 30/12/2021 12:07

@user1493494961

Ruth Elizabeth.
Really nice choice
Youngatheart00 · 30/12/2021 12:08

Lovely classy name

annabell22 · 30/12/2021 12:09

Ruth Annabel or Ruth Louise or Ruth Alicia

DacwMamYnDwad · 30/12/2021 12:11

Can't go wrong with it. I know a few but it's not overused. One was nn Rufus.

In some regional accents it can sound like Rewth not Rooth.

Ruthie is cute

Nancydrawn · 30/12/2021 12:12

Gorgeous name. I know a few young Ruths and they're funny, lovely, sparky girls. (Coincidence, of course, but still.) In the states, the name is having a bit of a resurgence, though still not widespread, from people who liked Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

tiredandveryhungry · 30/12/2021 12:12

It's a no from me. Sorry. Something about the 'th' sound at the end.

DOINGOURBIT · 30/12/2021 12:13

Lovely name.

Ruth Estelle
Ruth Elizabeth... depending on surname of course

deadlanguage · 30/12/2021 12:13

I think it’s lovely! The main downside to me is that because it is so short there are no obvious nicknames.

RuthW · 30/12/2021 12:15

Please please don't. Awful name. Is never shortened. I can't think why you would when there are so many lovely names around.

madamsapple · 30/12/2021 12:15

@PlainJane1000

It always makes me think of ruthless, which doesn't make it appealing to me sorry.
Ruth is a lovely name and has a lovely meaning.

Ruth means compassion and frindship (from Hebrew). Therefore ruthless is without compassion.

The word ruth has become an orphaned negative - have a look, they are fascinating.

Your ‘downside’ will be viewed as an ‘upside’ to many who don’t want a name that is routinely shortened
StepawayfromtheBiscuittin · 30/12/2021 12:16

Love it
It may be my name 😁
There is also Ruthful as well as Ruthless - Susie Dent posted its meaning on Twitter a while back.

Rudeppl · 30/12/2021 12:17

Ruth-less
