Opinions on Ruth? Any bad associations or nicknames I should be aware of?

Would also like some middle name suggestions. Preferably something a bit more modern.

Thank you in advance. Smile

@Kitkat151 this is one of the things I like about it.
I occasionally get Ruthie which I also don't mind but that only started when I was an adult from one person and it was always Ruth when I was a child.

Just2MoreSeasons · 30/12/2021 12:19

It was pronounced Roof when I was a child in 1970's Yorkshire

fitsandgiggles · 30/12/2021 12:21

Not nice sorry

stealthninjamum · 30/12/2021 12:24

I like it. I have two friends called Ruth and they are lovely people.

Approved by Ross Geller Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2021 12:29

I like it - can't understand why some people find it 'harsh'.

And if the child turns out to be a ruthless Amazon pirate then she can call herself Nancy.Grin

waterlego · 30/12/2021 12:32

I absolutely love it and wanted it for my DD but DH often pronounces ‘th’ as ‘f’ so it wouldn’t have worked for us!

Hoowhoowho · 30/12/2021 12:33

It’s a name that hasn’t come back yet but it’s pleasant, inoffensive, nice meaning. It’s one of those names which everyone will hate today ‘old fashioned, harsh sounding’ and love in 10 years time when your Ruth will be a trendsetter.

AiryFairy1 · 30/12/2021 12:34

Love Ruth! I know quite a few and they’re all great! Ruthie is sweet and Alf Stewart’s daughter in Home and Away is Roo, which I also like a lot!

Dottyteapot · 30/12/2021 12:34

I love the name Ruth.

A little girl I know called Ruth is often called Ruthie as a nickname.

The adults I know called Ruth all have the middle name Naomi (due to the biblical friendship). So I would avoid Naomi as a middle name, but go for something longer to balance out the shortness of Ruth.

Ruth Elizabeth is a lovely combination.

TheHoptimist · 30/12/2021 12:37

Quite religious these days

There is Ruth Archer

BiscuitLover3678 · 30/12/2021 12:38

Nn ‘Ru’ works for ‘Ruthy’

jackstini · 30/12/2021 12:47

I love it, it's a beautiful timeless name
I know 3, all in their 40s

Middle names
Eliana
Emilia
Olivia
Alexandra

Might depend on your surname initial...

Ilovedthe70s · 30/12/2021 12:49

Ruth is lovely, had an Australian boyfriend in the 70’s and one of his sisters was Ruth, always called Roo by the family.

DameAlyson · 30/12/2021 12:51

And if the child turns out to be a ruthless Amazon pirate then she can call herself Nancy. grin

I was waiting for someone to say that - surprised it took until page 2!

I like Ruth. The only possible downside is that people will say 'Roof', but then any name can be mangled by a local accent. I was once told that somebody was called Ellen. It was a while before I discovered she was actually Helen.

Rej92 · 30/12/2021 12:57

I’m a Ruth, so perhaps biased Wink

I was the only Ruth throughout the whole of school which I loved as there were so many multiples of other names, my mum used the name as didn’t like names being shortened which it never has been.
I’ve never had any issues with people using my name in a negative way.

Hope that helps!

inappropriateraspberry · 30/12/2021 13:03

Not many of us around! A good traditional name but not used a lot.
Can be a pain when on the phone - many people mishear it as Rhys or similar. 🙄
Can be shortened to Roo/Ru if wanted.
Can also be turned into Rufus and it's friend, Rufus Dufus!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 30/12/2021 13:03

I love it.

One of the most beautiful souls I have ever known is called Ruth.

She was the only one at school and I confess I don’t know many Ruths in my world.

But when I hear the name I think of her and it makes me smile.

easterholidays · 30/12/2021 13:04

I think it's a beautiful name.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/12/2021 13:04

@DacwMamYnDwad

Can't go wrong with it. I know a few but it's not overused. One was nn Rufus.

In some regional accents it can sound like Rewth not Rooth.

Ruthie is cute

I am trying to say Rewth and Rooth and they sound identical to me in my (Home Counties) accent. Both rhyme with Youth in the way I say them.

I dislike the name Ruth, but I'm not sure why.

Nosnowthisyear · 30/12/2021 13:05

Don’t like it at all sorry.

ScarlettDarling · 30/12/2021 13:05

I’d be put off by the number of people who’d call her Roof.

CELEBRATION67 · 30/12/2021 13:07

It's my 7 month old daughters middle name. It wouldn't be her name if it wasn't my mums name but tbh I love it. Its not overused and its pretty cute. We call her by her first and middle name all the time. Cant think of any nicknames but we sometimes call her toothy Ruthy because she is teething. I do think its due a revival but even if not, it's a nice name.

SmallElephant · 30/12/2021 13:11

I like Ruth
