Opinions on Ruth? Any bad associations or nicknames I should be aware of?

Would also like some middle name suggestions. Preferably something a bit more modern.

Thank you in advance. Smile

I like Ruthie but not Ruth. Both would sound pretty in certain accents I think.. up north or in Scotland with a thicker accent i would think aww that's a nice sounding name. But here in the home counties if someone called out Ruth i would think 'that's a bit odd...a toddler called Ruth.. maybe there from (insert rich estate here)"

Philandbill · 30/12/2021 13:21

Beautiful name and lovely meaning. Biased because it was my Granny's name though. How about Ruth Eleanor?

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 30/12/2021 13:24

I think it's beautiful. My best friend is Ruth and so is my cousin. It's my one of my DD's middle names and we very nearly used it as a first name

SallyWD · 30/12/2021 13:37

It was quite common when I was a child (70s and 80s)but I just never liked it. It's just the sound - it's harsh and unpleasant to me.

Notgotanyidea · 30/12/2021 14:00

Ruth Joanna comes to mind. No idea why.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 14:58

No bad associations but it's my name and it's shit. I truly hate it and wonder what my parents were thinking. My siblings have really lovely and interesting names. At school my nickname was rendell after the author Ruth Rendell. Yes that is the best association anyone could come up with. I did it dull and uninteresting, you can't shorten it, you can't do anything with it. It sounds ridiculous in some accents and is hard to pronounce in others. Just sound like a noise when people try to shout it .. I could go on 😆

WombatChocolate · 30/12/2021 15:03

In my experience, Ruth is often used by Christian families - Biblical name.

Suzi888 · 30/12/2021 15:03

Babe Ruth -makes me think of that ‘Friends’ episode Grin it’s a no from me.

ChristmasRobins · 30/12/2021 15:03

Look homeward Angel now, and melt with ruth. Beautiful name.

Thatoldchestnutagain · 30/12/2021 15:11

I think Ruthie is sweet and Ruth, I only knew one, makes a good professional name I think. Something made me think of Dulcie.. Dulcie means sweet and Dulcie Ruth sounds good to me..then I think of the initials DR.. interesting 😉

TheScottishPlay · 30/12/2021 15:16

I love it - it's a family name for us. You can be a Ruth when you're 2 and when you're 82. Nickname wise Rufus, Roo and Ruthie.
I like Ruth Helen Smile

I disagree and think Ruth is always 82
campion · 30/12/2021 15:35

Lovely name and one not subject to whims of fashion.
Ruthie is the obvious diminutive. I'd go for a longer middle name eg Elizabeth, Helena, Olivia, Imogen.

TheScottishPlay · 30/12/2021 16:00

Now that's harsh!

deadlanguage · 30/12/2021 16:01

The only Ruths I know are in their 20s & 30s

userisi2 · 30/12/2021 16:11

Assuming you're not a Friends fan Grin

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2021 16:14

I like short, neat, classic names generally - but not Ruth.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 16:24

Now that's harsh!
It's my name - I'm allowed to be harsh about it. It's a shit name for anyone pre retirement age 😆
HappydaysArehere · 30/12/2021 16:41

Lovely name with connotations of love. And loyalty. Thinking of the bible reference which is so beautiful.

JohnSmithDrive · 30/12/2021 16:44

She was the loyal DIL in the Bible, I don't love that story Grin

Depending on where you live there's a strong possibility she'll be called Rewf a lot.

It's a good sensible name, real without being too popular

None of the Ruth’s I know are church people
TonkinLenkicks · 30/12/2021 16:48

I know lots of Ruth’s, all different ages. I love it, i think it’s similar to Grace but not as common. My Ruth gets called Roo, Rufus, Ruthieo as nicknames.

BlazingRufus · 30/12/2021 16:55

Don't do it! I'm a Ruth and

  1. It sounds ridiculous when shouted across the playground (like someone mimicking a dog bark)
  2. Most of the planet can't pronounce it because of the 'th' sound
110APiccadilly · 30/12/2021 17:00

@ErrolTheDragon

I like it - can't understand why some people find it 'harsh'.

And if the child turns out to be a ruthless Amazon pirate then she can call herself Nancy.Grin

I clicked on this thread in order to make the Amazon comment Grin. If I'd been called Ruth, I'd have renamed myself Nancy between the ages of 9 to 12.

I think it's a nice name, and I suspect Swallows and Amazons isn't popular enough nowadays for her to routinely be called Nancy!

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 30/12/2021 17:03

I think it's a lovely name!
