Opinions on Ruth? Any bad associations or nicknames I should be aware of?

Would also like some middle name suggestions. Preferably something a bit more modern.

Thank you in advance. Smile

I haven’t read your full thread but see you are in Australia.

Mate, your kid is going to be called Strewth. For years. And everyone who says it will think they are marvellously funny.

Trust me on this.

Also, if on the phone at work, “….This is Ruth” doesn’t work. People don’t hear your name. “…. This is Ruth speaking” works as the extra couple of syllables allow customers brain to catch up with their ears.

Don’t say you weren’t told.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 13/05/2023 12:17

I don’t like it. I know names like Olivia, Isla, Sophia etc all get slated here because they’re too popular but I’d much rather have a nice common name than a name like Ruth even if you are the only one.

Theoldwoman · 13/05/2023 13:24

Can’t stand Ruth personally. It’s my sister’s middle name and she doesn’t like it either.

I like a 3 syllable middle name.

Ruth Penelope
Ruth Annabel
Ruth Francesca
Ruth Elizabeth
Ruth Saskia
Ruth Melanie
Ruth Caroline
Ruth Genevieve
Ruth Olivia
Ruth Amelia
Ruth Bethany
Ruth Tabitha
Ruth Juliet
Ruth Rhiannon
Ruth Georgina
Ruth Theresa
Ruth Madeleine
Ruth Antoinette
Ruth Cassandra
Ruth Isobel
Ruth Christina
Ruth Emily
Ruth Millicent
Ruth Lillian
Ruth Marguerite
Ruth Imogen

I am in England, not Australia. Ruth seems to be something of a 'marmite love it or hate it name. I love it. It's a classic name that has a lovely meaning and good connotations with the Biblical Ruth. I think I will decide for myself considering there are those that love it and those that hate it. I will close this post now.

ClaireSweeneyStuntDouble · 13/05/2023 20:45

Absolutely agree that in Australia the Strewth Ruth thing would definitely happen and be such a pain in the posterior hearing it for the seventh time on any given week.

Obviously she was addressing the OP, the person who started the thread...

Not you.

DannyZukosSmile · 13/05/2023 20:47

It's one of my least favourite names. I really dislike it. Can't explain why.

tourdefrance · 13/05/2023 20:51

Love it as a good strong name that isn't cute sounding as it doesn't end in e or a.

SunnyFog · 14/05/2023 07:21

Ruthenia is an area in Ukraine.

The name is hard to say and gets
Roof
Root
Woof
Woot
Ruz
Wuz
Rooss
Wooss - or wuss

For some people, saying the name correctly will cause them so much anxiety they may avoid saying it or will pause to get their mouth ready.
It's not a great name.

DCTozer · 16/05/2023 16:46

Twaddle. Ruth is not that hard to pronounce at all. If you can say the, that, thin etc, you can say Ruth. It's a traditional name and deserves to be used.

I was going to say the same! Ruth is not hard to pronounce at all 😂😂😂

SilentParrot · 16/05/2023 16:51

An ugly name.

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2023 17:32

I don't think it's ugly at all.

But it's not frilly.

I would expect a Ruth to be academic and kind. She wouldn't be one of the "popular" girls but she would be genuinely nice, and and probably not care about fashion. She'll have some talent, such as being a great pianist or artist, but won't want anyone else to know about it. She will study History at university. She'll probably end up a vicars wife, and her sons will go to Oxford.

It's fine face to face, but on the phone is distorted enough to be Rhys, Rose, even Root!

Lots of people, entire linguistic communities, can't say th.
Also lots of people struggle with r.
It's genuinely hard at both ends.

The Ruth I knew in school was one of the most popular girls and went on to become a nurse and is still one of the popular girls in her 40s 😄

Hate the name Roof sorry!

Probably just as well the name here is Ruth and not Roof then. Sounds more like an issue with your ability to pronounce "th" which must make loads of names a problem for you. Or even many of the words in this post. That's a real shame.

@recyclemeagain My name is Ruth and in the near 40 years Ive been on this earth, I can count on one hand how many times I've been called Ruth and not Roof!

It's called th-fronting. In many areas of the UK, their local dialect, causes them to pronounce 'th' as an 'f' sound. You should look it up!

Oh and just before you feel the need to pick me up for any grammatical errors, I'm dyslexic.

recyclemeagain · 18/05/2023 14:33

@Scottyme In some maybe, in the parts of the UK that I have lived no it would be Ruth and you would not have to have lived your life as Roof.
And before you feel the need to leap down my throat I too am dyslexic and didn't actually pick you up on your grammar/spelling as didn't feel it necessary. I merely pointed out it's not Roof, which you agree as you state your name is Ruth- albeit just poorly pronounced by others.
Full disclosure, I'm autistic as well as dyslexic so yes hearing things pronounced incorrectly does grate on me as to me it's not right.

Scottyme · 18/05/2023 14:46

@recyclemeagain you haven't lived my life so you have no idea how I've lived my life being called Roof not Ruth.

And for clarification, I wasn't the first to jump down anyones throat, you for some reason took offence to my post and jumped down my throat, despite others also saying that they hear it pronounced roof. I'm not going to be childish though and get into any tit for tat. The OP asked for personal opinions on the name I gave my response to the name that is all.

FortofPud · 18/05/2023 14:50

I do like it but I've never met a Ruth in real life who didn't dislike her name. That might be generational though.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 18/05/2023 15:07

Love it .

And you haven't lived my life and haven't actually asked my lived experience as a Ruth but let's not get into semantics. Off you pop Roof 🙄

Housenoob · 18/05/2023 22:09

Oh I'm sorry, are you having an 89 year old?

(Hope OP has seen the Friends episode 😂)
