Opinions on Ruth? Any bad associations or nicknames I should be aware of?

Would also like some middle name suggestions. Preferably something a bit more modern.

Thank you in advance. Smile

If I’m honest I don’t like the name Ruth, I find it dated and not due a comeback yet and unfortunately bad associations! But there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a classic name and some people will love it. Won’t date further than it already is.

Middle name suggestions

Ruth Isabelle
Ruth Eleanor
Ruth Harriet
Ruth Matilda
Ruth Sienna
Ruth Imogen
Ruth Emily
Ruth Clementine
Ruth Arabella
Ruth Beatrix
Ruth Harper
Ruth Elodie

Love it. One of my favourites. Short, smart, strong, elegant.

I have a Ruth, named after her grandmother. She was nn ‘Ruthie’ by her Nursery teacher, which in a class of smallies who couldn’t pronounce ‘r’ or ‘th’ became ‘Wootie’. She’s 8 now and we still have kids coming up to us calling her Wootie .

I'm a Ruth. I was called Wendy for the first few days of life till my mum thankfully changed her mind. Though from Wendy to Ruth is a bit of a leap.

My variety of nicknames are Rue, Ruthie, Ruthers, Rouge, Rufus. Was married to a man whose first language doesn't have the "th" sound so I was Root there.

One person I've known most of my life calls me Slate.

I like my name and the history behind it.

I love Rue and would definitely use it as a nickname.

I strongly dislike it, just not to my taste, but it’s perfectly fine as a name. I certainly wouldn’t pay too much mind to the fact that it’s marmite on here. I would consider the fact that you’d be hearing ‘roof’ a lot though, from peers while they’re small. If that doesn’t bother you, and it would only be temporary, go for it.

Foxglovers · 31/12/2021 15:49

I love it - and love Roo as a nickname

SummerLew · 31/12/2021 17:31

It's a decent name but I just don't like the vibe. I quite like harsh girl names but Ruth is too sharp.

TheScottishPlay · 31/12/2021 18:07

@liveforsummer
I'm sorry that you hate your name. It's mine too.

Hadtocomment · 31/12/2021 19:00

I like it. I find the simplicity of it refreshing in relation to all the frilly names that often seem to be suggested on here. One thing I don't understand is why people put generic middle names. I think middle names only really make sense to me if you want to give the person another choice, if the person's first name is the same as a parent so needs something to differentiate, or if the middle name has some sort of family connection or personal association. So I'd go for something with a bit of personal connection if it was me either after a relative or a good friend or a person you admire, rather than adding in something generic like the rose or grace options or super frilly like a lot of the popular suggestions.

Love it, my favourite person in the world is called Ruth

RuthIsMyName · 31/12/2021 21:16

It’s my name and I’m really not a fan. As a child I could not pronounce it at all and then used to get very annoyed with people calling me Woof after I’d announced myself as such. I still dread saying my name out loud and find that people struggle to catch it. I use my middle name in Starbucks!

Ruth sounds ridiculous with both my birth surname which is a common Irish surname and my current married surname which is a one syllable name also ending in th (though I concede this one is unusually bad luck). I’m not sure what surname Ruth would actually go well with!

My DH says it’s the sound of someone vomiting.

I know pronunciation issues already mentioned but a lot of my work is very global and I guess this will be increasingly the case for our children going forward. Colleagues in India and China for example really really struggle with my name and find it far harder than any European colleague to manage.

I’’ve worked on a couple of projects which have also involved men named Bruce and find that on tele and video conferences people hear our names interchangeably and we answer each other’s questions and get each other’s actions.

BernardsBum · 31/12/2021 21:28

I've always thought Ruth as a fairly inoffensive name.
Really surprised by the strength of dislike in some previous posts.

SunshineOnKeith · 31/12/2021 21:29

Great name

Ruthietuthie · 31/12/2021 21:34

My name is Ruth (Ruth Elizabeth) and I love my name. As a child, I wanted something frillier (my dream name as an 8 year old was Araminta!!!) but now I really like it.
Not too popular but easy to spell and pronounce. An elegant, professional name.

floatinginmyhomie · 31/12/2021 22:15

It’s w beautiful name

CheshireCats · 31/12/2021 22:26

I don't like it. It is classic, but it's an ugly name.

DCTozer · 11/05/2023 17:56

Ruthless is the opposite of Ruth. Ruth means 'compassionate friend'. Ruthless therefore means 'without compassion and friendless. So Ruth is a beautiful name with a beautiful meaning. I love Ruth Eleanor.

pickd · 11/05/2023 17:58

I've known two Ruth's in my life and have to say they're two of the nicest people I've known. Genuinely lovely, welcoming, funny, kind and caring people.
Lovely name!

CharlieBoo · 11/05/2023 20:09

There are so many beautiful girls names.. Ruth is not one of them.. in my opinion

Agreed.

I an a Ruth. Please don't

DCTozer · 12/05/2023 06:26

If you don't like the name, you don't have to use it! Even if it is your name, you can change it by deed poll. I can think of way more worse names than Ruth. Gertrude anyone?

Tinytigertail · 12/05/2023 07:33

I know 3 lovely (adult) Ruths but despite that, I just can't warm to the name. I find it very harsh sounding.
