Expecting a boy in Jan!

Really liking Skip, I think that spelling is preferableto Skipp, any opinions?

Older brother is Jem

I quite like Skip tbh. But I would use it as a preferred name and put Sukhvinder or Sandeep or something on the birth certificate.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/11/2021 21:54

I do understand that these are sweet nick names, but they aren’t names, so it’s not kind to your child.

Kip is usually a pet name for Christopher or Charles - any name starting with a C/K.
Skip is just a short form of the nn Skipper (ie Boss)
Kai is Japanese but it does have a downmarket feel here.

Can you use Kip or Skip as a nn for some K or S name you like? It just gives you child some options.

Jem is different - it’s a diminutive like Sam so it’s a recognisable name.

MammaLovesLeopard · 18/11/2021 22:08

Makes me think of Skippy The Bush Kangaroo 🦘🦘🦘

Firebird83 · 18/11/2021 23:08

Kit would go really well with Jem

DedalusBloom · 19/11/2021 05:38

How about Mariner? It's a surname, but that doesn't usually stop people.

Kai is quite downmarket in the UK ( sorry!) and Crew and Skip sound far too American to my ears.

Kit is ok but I think it's a bit weak on a grown man.

IVflytrap · 19/11/2021 11:00

I like Kai. It's a name in many languages, including a lot of European ones. Kai is the main male character in the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. I also really like Nate as suggested earlier.

@DoucheCanoe ooops...you're right, sorry, read op's post too quickly! Yes bullies will find excuses but we don't need to give them more I guess...

I was going to suggest Marin.

This thread is making me hide under the blanket and trying not to laugh out too loud! (Baby is asleep)
Skip…Kip…Crew… I mean what the hell😂
I’m dying to know where are you based OP?
Skip- mean rubbish/dump
Kip- means a shithole (dirty gag) as in “place is a kip!”
Crew… well means crew lol
Funniest thread ever :)

LostInTheColonies · 19/11/2021 21:25

If it's been used by the Rooneys, steer clear (Kai). Kai means food in NZ, so another reason to avoid it. The main male character in The Snow Queen is Kay, not Kai, and Kay is not good for kids of any gender.
Crew is also terrible and Cru is even worse.

Much better, and in keeping with Jem, are
• Kit
• Hal
• Cal
• Nate

Rockmehardplace · 19/11/2021 22:19

I knew a lovely dog called Skip! Great for a dog not for a kid. I would suggest

Jonah
Xav
Xander

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 20/11/2021 01:46

Kip means a shithole

honkytonkheroe · 20/11/2021 02:45

I work for a criminal defence firm of solicitors and Kai is quite a common name amongst our clients so it's not a name I'd ever choose. At the very best I'd say it's chavvy.

CJsGoldfish · 20/11/2021 02:53

Would Skipper with nn Skip be better?

🤣🤣

IndecentCakes · 20/11/2021 02:58

Captain Jack Sparrow.

alexdgr8 · 20/11/2021 03:08

i think this is a joke thread.

Garriet · 20/11/2021 03:23

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

Jem is really lovely. It was originally a medieval nn for James or Jeremy, so similar style boys names to me would be Cal (originally from Charles or Calvin), Kit (Christopher or Christian), Hal (Henry or Harold), Ned (Edward, Edmund or Edgar) or Will (William or Wilfred).

Other one syllable "nn style" names that I think might work with Jem are Bram, Heath or perhaps Drew instead of Crew - but I don't hate Kai (although I personally much prefer the Cai spelling).

Jen is truly outrageous, truly truly truly outrageous.
Garriet · 20/11/2021 03:23

Or even Jem. Ffs.

BoudiccaBee · 20/11/2021 03:29

Oh Christ no
Just no
To Skip, Kai, Crew

ThirdElephant · 20/11/2021 03:31

Kai is nice, though pretty mainstream these days.

There's Tripp, Briggs, Cruise, Jesse (two syllables, I know, but I think it fits well with Jem), Finn, Isle, Leif, Ray?

RhubarbAndMustard · 20/11/2021 03:35

I loosely know someone called Skip. No idea if it's a nickname but always thought it was quite nice actually and does suit him.

ThirdElephant · 20/11/2021 03:35

@Garriet

Or even Jem. Ffs.
Jem is outrageous. Truly truly truly outrageous.

Nah, it's not that out there. I like it.

What's outrageous is insulting someone's baby name choice after the baby has been born and named and when it's not been put up for discussion. Outrageously rude, even when anonymously done from behind a keyboard.

PineappleWilson · 20/11/2021 03:44

Beckett, shortened to Beck?

Garriet · 20/11/2021 07:14

@ThirdElephant I’m going to guess you never saw the popular 80s children’s cartoon.
