Is Jaxson (jax) too much like jack we like the name but have a nephew called jack we don't know if it's to similar?

OP posts:

A child is down market? Nice.

The name. Not the child. I don't treat people differently because of their name. I think most people will probably hear a name they dislike and think it sounds trashy. It's a judgement on the name.

3teens2cats · 14/03/2021 13:17

Call him what you like but stick with traditional spellings please. Poor child will spend his whole life correcting people.

EmbarrassingMama · 14/03/2021 13:28

It’s awful. Are you American? He will be blacklisted as a trouble make immediately.

No he won't.

Maybe, by pricks.

I don't like the name personally but there's a way of saying it without being horrible and making OP feel like shit.

Not my cup of tea
I don't like it personally
I think the spelling is strange

See how easy it is to not be needlessly mean?

MimiDaisy11 · 14/03/2021 13:30

@likeamillpond

The name is very popular among African Americans. I wonder if the people who hate it are showing their prejudice?
How are people supposed to know that? Aren't most responders British?
debwong · 14/03/2021 13:43

It could work as a middle name but only if his first name is Basement.

Pogostemon · 14/03/2021 15:34

Jaxson is not my favourite and I think the spelling might confuse people, but if you like it, who cares what I think?

I’m stuck still wondering why Maddison is better/more normal than Madison. Surely the trend started with the mermaid character in Splash, who was named after Madison Avenue?

TomorrowsPrincess · 14/03/2021 15:53

Pleeeaaaseee just spell it properly!!!
It's Jackson...... I hate the other spelling..... I always associate it with people who spell gorgeous - gawjus!
JACKSON!

percheron67 · 14/03/2021 15:59

Urgh! Jaxson the Klaxon!

@likeamillpond

Give over. The posters on here are in the vast majority from the UK - you know perfectly well that this is about the correlation between names and class in Britain. Jaxon/Jaxson has a downmarket association in Britain and that is what many people are responding to - plus a dislike of manipulated spellings.

It’s fair enough to comment on it being British class prejudice - but it’s deliberately incendiary and ridiculous to suggest it’s about a prejudice towards names poplar with African Americans.

MitheringSunday · 15/03/2021 05:50

I don't like terms such as 'chavvy' and suggestions that a child with a certain name will be 'banded as a troublemaker'. The fact is, though, that in the UK, people with social capital are very unlikely to choose this name, and it's worth OP knowing that, in case she doesn't. I would possibly make an assumption about the child's social background on hearing the name. Not about their character or behaviour - about their social background. This wouldn't lead me to treat the child differently from anyone else, and it probably wouldn't be something I spent time thinking about, but I would probably note, when I learned more about the child, that certain things 'fitted' (or didn't) with what I'd assumed.

In terms of personal taste, I'm not a fan of surnames-as-first-names, nor of alternative spellings.

Drunkenmonkey · 15/03/2021 09:40

I hate the terms chavvy and downmarket. Saying 'downmarket' is one of those terms that in 10 years time we will look back on ourselves and not be able to believe we used to say it.
It's basically just looking down on poorer people, hideous.
I actually think Jackson and Jaxon are fine. It's not my personal taste but I wouldn't think anything of meeting one or judge the parent.
Jaxson on the other hand looks like a misspelling as there is no need for an X and an S together as the X makes the desired sound.
So personally I'd go for Jaxon.

KirstenBlest · 15/03/2021 14:51

It's basically just looking down on poorer people, hideous.

It's looking down at people's taste, not at their financial situation.

By downmarket, I would mean from a less aspirational socio-economic background. Some names imply that the person comes from a type of background. They might not actually come from that background.

I know someone with a very british sounding name who doesn't look particularly british, who was born here but went to school abroad so has a slight accent. That person said that when he/she went for an interview, the person would be taken aback, because they hadn't expected a person of colour. Not a lot you can do about that, but people will form an impression of you from your name.

FluWorldOrder · 15/03/2021 15:50

I've read briefly. Awful name but that's just my opinion, at the end of the day it's your baby. But yes, please spell it Jackson not the totally awful Jaxson. I notice a few comments re: class etc.. We don't have this same class obsession where I'm from (New Zealand) but this would definitely be considered a 'rough' name. Sorry, just the truth Sad

RichPetunia · 15/03/2021 19:10

Please don’t spell it Jaxson, it’s too chavvy. If you spell it normally people will maybe think of Michael Jackson. Either use Jack and stick to it, or change the name altogether.

Jackson is a very common name.
RootyT00t · 15/03/2021 19:36

Name your child what you like OP.

Proseccoforone · 15/03/2021 20:36

Sons of anarchy?
Jackson shortened would be jack - not what the OP wants
Jaxson shortened would be jax - what the OP wants

I like it and think you should go for it

Jackson/Jaxon/Jakson - your child, your choice.

But Jaxson just sets my teeth on edge, there’s no need for the ‘s’ when you have the ‘x’

Once you take that leap into a world where names can just be made up, quibbling over the spelling of a made-up name seems a bit pointless Grin
Buttercup54321 · 18/08/2021 01:18

I know six Jaxon, Jackson, Jaxson under 7 years old.
Jason
Max
James
Lomax

HPLikecraft · 18/08/2021 03:35

I’m not too keen on surnames as names, but Jackson is not too bad.

Jaxon and Jaxson are awful, though!
