Is Jaxson (jax) too much like jack we like the name but have a nephew called jack we don't know if it's to similar?

OP posts:
**@RootyT00t* like you I'm disgusted by the posts in here today, pathetic and downright nasty attitudes, especially when @Montysauras* has said her child is named Jaxson. Which, by the way, is a great name. If people don't like a name, which I accept the OP has asked opinions on, then 'it's not for me' is far better than the ignorant crap based on stereotypes shown here.
Quite. I applaud Monty for taking it so well.

Vierty · 14/03/2021 09:19

It’s truly the most hideous name.

itsgettingwierd · 14/03/2021 09:21

Jackson is nice but I'd spell it like this.

I know one and he's a lovely boy.

But if you want to avoid it because if Jack and like Jaxson how about

Jenson?

WombatChocolate · 14/03/2021 09:22

Depends ....if you want to align yourself with a group of people who always choose ‘unique’ spellings of names, then go for it.

Be aware that the minute anyone sees this name and spelling on paper, they will form a preconceived idea of your son. That might be your plan....but it might not. This will be schools and teachers and potential employers.

It’s just worth bearing in mind.

Not true.
Chilldonaldchill · 14/03/2021 09:25

Apologies for not having read all the posts.
I don't like it but Jackson and Jaxon are very common nowadays and very recognisable.
Jaxson just looks illiterate though. The s is redundant and it's very confusing to know how to pronounce it.

RootyT00t · 14/03/2021 09:25

It’s truly the most hideous name.
Would you tell that to Monty? I'm sure she'd love to hear it.
Brandysnapzzz · 14/03/2021 09:25
@RootyT00t, she said the name was downmarket.

We judge people on their names, whether we like it or not.

Jack is neutral and doesn't get judged, Jackson will get judget a bit because it's a surname. Jaxson will definitely get judged.

The people doing the judging will be people like teachers, friends, friends ' parents, employers and so on.
Tell that to Jackson Pollock!

likeamillpond · 14/03/2021 09:27

The name is very popular among African Americans.
I wonder if the people who hate it are showing their prejudice?

Roooty, when you say ‘not true’ are you suggesting that potential employers won’t notice that name and have preconceived ideas of it?

Are you saying it’s not true that it aligns him with a group of people?

Names do align people and are part of forming tribes. You might not like it nor think it’s right, but it is reality.

The Jacks and John’s are in tribes too.

It’s naïeive (can’t spell it) to imagine anything else.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/03/2021 09:28

I've now read the thread.
I'm surprised at the horror at Jackson and Jaxon - there are A LOT of them out there. I don't perceive them as "lower class" at all but as rather middle class try-hard.

In suggesting that telling OP that he will be judged all his life is simply not true.

I'm sure there are s few small minded people around but thankfully most people don't judge a child by their name.

Xavier, Sebastian, Leo?
I’m not keen on surnames as first names although it’s huge in the US. I think if you go for this and then spell it Jackson

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2021 09:33

Jackson Pollock has a whole life to be judged on.

Baby names asks simply about a name.

Names have associations. There are ways of expressing this without being rude or nasty but people ask for opinions on here because presumably, they want to know what the general consensus could be. You have to acknowledge that 90% of responses aren't just unfavourable, they're visceral. I reckon the majority of those people responding would treat children as individuals but they're responding solely to the name. And MNers are just people. They don't exist solely on this website. Sure, they represent a demographic but that demographic exists in rl too. They are telling you how they will hear a name.

People can say they don't make assumptions about a name but they will. Nobody who lives on planet earth would hear the name Ptolemy Tristram StJohn Ponsenby-Smythe for example, and not make the tiniest of leaps.

They are showing a prejuduce but to socioeconomic patterns.

This thread shows why the British are seen as the most appalling snobs. Disgraceful.

Apologies to those of you who have defended the OP and her name choice.

minniemoocher · 14/03/2021 09:41

Give him a proper name, one day he'll be applying for jobs, many industries are traditional and snobby

NoWordForFluffy · 14/03/2021 09:48

@Mylasmummy2102, we couldn't choose a boy's name either, so we looked at the ONS spreadsheet of every baby boy's name with at least 2 incidences which they publish every year about the previous year's babies.

That gave us ideas we hadn't considered and DS has a name we got from there.

I'm not keen on Jaxson, but it's entirely up to you if it's the only name you like!

NoWordForFluffy · 14/03/2021 09:51

Table 6 is the one with all of the names, not just the top 100.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 14/03/2021 09:57

I like it, but I do prefer the Jackson spelling. Don't know why tbh...I do like unusual names, but the Jaxson spelling isn't to my taste as, in my head, I seem to naturally separate it into Jax [pause] son!

How about Jax on its own? Or something else shortened to Jax? Jasper maybe?

Too similar to the cousin...hmmm tbh, I'm always surprised people get offended by cousins having similar names. It wouldn't bother me if my brother or sister had dcs with exactly the same name as one of mine tbh. I don't see family that much though, as they live overseas! But, imo it's fine to have cousins Jaxson / Jackson and Jack. Also, Jack has to be one of the most commonly used boy names in the UK across decades of use. They won't be the only people in town with a little Jack, so would be weird if they took umbridge imo.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 14/03/2021 09:57

I also love Sonny as a shortening for Jackson.

dcb2 · 14/03/2021 10:19

Showofhands completely agree with your comments. The question was about people's perceptions of a name, not a child. It's a first impression, often a name you see on paper or hear first, that's fleeting and passes as soon as you meet the person in question.

We all like different names. There are names I find a bit downmarket and names I find too upmarket/socially aspirational. The list of names left is a group that many would find dull and uninspirational. Both of my sons' names are in that category and I'm sure if I asked for views, many people would tell me I've picked boring names. That's absolutely fine.

Presumably the purpose of these posts is to do a rough poll on whether people like or dislike the proposed names, and the reasons for that?

KirstenBlest · 14/03/2021 12:54

@Brandysnapzzz, "Tell that to Jackson Pollock!"

I have many skills but I'm not good at communicating with the dead.
