Would you use the name everyone hates?

So me and DH chose a name for our DD. It is English, classic, old, probably posh. I don't know anyone with the name and neither does my husband. We like the meaning, the sound of it and the diminutives. It goes well with the surname and our names. I don't want to say it but it is smth like Verity or Lavinia. Quite rare.
His family was very rough critisizing it, mine is being even worse. Anyone who we mention it to says how awful it is. I'm not getting it. There is no valid reason for such rude reaction apart from people not having heard of it much. I don't know what to do. We have already got used to it but are we ruining our baby's life? Have you been in a similar situation? I'm under the impression that you can meet a child with any name nowadays and our choice will hardly be a shock

Ooh I quite like that name. Although I have to admit, if my DS announced she was calling her baby this, I probably would take the mick as it does sound quite posh.

But the important thing is that you like it.

My MIL was taken aback when we announced dd was called Tabitha.
I don't think she liked it much but over a decade later she is now perfectly used to it.

Your family got a chance to do their naming. Now it is your turn.

I also think minty is a cute nn for a dc.

Araminta is a lovely name! Ignore the horrendous response of your family. My mother said the same when we named our youngest Sebastian. She "just" wasn't a fan but turns out it "just" wasn't her decision.

It's a perfectly fine name. Not my taste but not offensive either. Although it is a bit of a mouthful at 4 syllables so I hope you have a short surname?

Araminta does have a slightly upper class image so I guess I understand what your family mean in that regard, but it's not a very unusual/weird name at all (and better posh than downmarket!). I also love that it sounds very "British", and it has an elegant, regency feel to me.

I went to school with an Araminta and always felt quite envious of her name. I'd forgotten about it by the time I needed a name for my own dd (darn it)
I liked Jemima too, so in my next life I'll use those

It’s such a special and personal thing naming your baby, and you should give her a name you love.

Not to my taste but it's not so bad that I think you're doing a stupid irresponsible thing.

Like Dolly for example is just so infantile I would try and talk you out of that. It is more than ''a name I don't like''.

There won't be a middle name so we won't make it ridiculously long. Should be manageable it goes well with the surname, similar sounds but not mouthful.

I think the name is fine. It does sound quite posh and therefore could be the subject of ridicule. But it is a nice name.

I truly don't get people who say that children will get teased for their names - I guess if you live in a bit of a bubble, maybe that's possible. My children are lucky enough to go to really multi cultural schools where there are loads of different and interesting names, some of which sound really weird - and I've never heard anyone ever mention anyone's name as something to tease them about, let alone bully.
My ds's name would be considered quite posh and unusual but no one bats an eyelid. However my mother in law was quite critical when he was born and I know that quite a few friends/family weren't keen - but he was born by then so no one (other than the mil!) was going to actually be rude enough to express that.
Go for it op. It's cute and very unusual but a name everyone will recognise.

I like it. But, I don't think I'd use a name that was very unpopular with people irl. I'd probably test it a bit more with friends, maybe even after the baby is born. Your child will have to live with this name and if everyone she meets has the first thought of 'God, what a name' well, it might be easier for them to use another name. Also, I think she'll be constantly having to spell that to people.
