Would you use the name everyone hates?

So me and DH chose a name for our DD. It is English, classic, old, probably posh. I don't know anyone with the name and neither does my husband. We like the meaning, the sound of it and the diminutives. It goes well with the surname and our names. I don't want to say it but it is smth like Verity or Lavinia. Quite rare.
His family was very rough critisizing it, mine is being even worse. Anyone who we mention it to says how awful it is. Hmm I'm not getting it. There is no valid reason for such rude reaction apart from people not having heard of it much. I don't know what to do. We have already got used to it but are we ruining our baby's life? Have you been in a similar situation? I'm under the impression that you can meet a child with any name nowadays and our choice will hardly be a shock

I love it. And Minty is great as a nickname. Ignore your family and use it!

MrsMaryClausFace · 12/01/2021 04:51

Oooh I was right Grin

I like it OP.

And I'm glad it isn't Dorkas which was my other guess.

Enidblyton1 · 12/01/2021 09:18

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

To be honest, unless she'll have her own pony, I really wouldn't

Plus 'aeromint' .springs to mind.

But your baby, your choice. Your families will 'come around'.

Ha! That’s such a stereotype! Just like saying all Ruperts must be chinless wonder, public school fops who are destined for a life as upmarket country estate agents. Ridiculous!

It's lovely. Did you ever watch "moondial" as a child? Will always remind me of that.

NavyBerry · 12/01/2021 09:31

I'm so far away from Jimmy Choo world that it is the first time I hear about this lady and her daughter 🙈 but why not? It is a name and there are girls out there with it

Re schools. Not even sure we will end in England after all so it might be quite an international environment.

I loved the comment re how British it is. SmileSmileSmile

Love it.

Never tell people the name before the baby's born. That's pregnancy 101.

MrsBobDylan · 12/01/2021 23:49

Lovely, ignore relatives.

I only shared a prospective name once with my parents because it was my Grandad's name and I just wanted to check my Dad was ok for us to use it.

Well, they were awful about it and asked me not too use it, said it was a terrible name. I think it went to their heads and they started to believe they'd been asked because they were so good at naming babies.

In the end I called ds2 a name I'd loved for years so I'm glad they vetoed on that level, but I still love the name and would advise anyone never to consult re:baby names.

ellenleaves · 13/01/2021 10:02

Not a name I'd use, but it's not awful. Minty is terrible though, full name or some other shortenings a million times nicer.

If you were my friend I'd say it's beautiful and get used to even Minty, I've got used to other unusual names ok!

Caspianberg · 13/01/2021 10:18

It’s a perfectly normal name

My family were virtually begging for name ideas last year after we didn’t tell them.

I know they would have hated the names we chose in the end, but seeing as we only told them when baby was 3 days old they couldn’t say how much they hate it. I think they would say first name is ‘old’, and middle name is ‘foreign’.
Now, a few months down the line, it’s just his name, and they have no problem

babbaloushka · 13/01/2021 10:43

Gorgeous name

PoodleMoth · 13/01/2021 13:15

I love Araminta! I hope you go for it. Our names were similar in that they are heard of but not common, we purposefully didn't tell anyone before the births.

LittleTiger007 · 14/01/2021 21:59

If you like a name then use it. People who love your child will learn to love the name.

micc · 15/01/2021 07:57

OP I was in the exact same situation!!! Me and OH fell in love with her name, it's a well known name just underused. And the reactions we got from family and close friends were outrageous. They would literally be like no that's awful. One said she would sound like a stripper. Now shes here we stuck to our guns and it suits her and we love it. I would recommend not telling anyone if you have more children in the future! I made the mistake twice as both my daughters have unusual names. I had a wobble about both names at one point in my pregnancys because of other peoples opinions. But it's not like your naming her Lucifer! Everyone needs to calm down. Tell them to shove it! Honestly some people need to learn to keep their mouths shut.

dinglethedragon · 15/01/2021 08:17

Maybe they are Dawn French fans and associate it with the character in her comedy series Lark Rise to Candleford who was called Araminta,? - she was definitely not posh though!

I think it's a lovely name.

Enko · 15/01/2021 08:25

Its a fab name and was on our short list for ds.. but obviously he turned out to be a boy so we didn't use it Grin

Dh worked with one many years ago she never shortened it said she preferred the full name I just felt she was so kickass great about it.

Ds has a name many hates my mother said its horrid when I told her he was Conrad but you know dh and I liked it and he is our son. At age 19 he says he likes his name. People know it and they do nt mistake him for others.
