So out of curiosity I searched my own name in the mumsnet search function to see what opinions are on my name as a ‘baby name’.

Turns out I have a very very horrible name that everyone hates!!!

Makes me feel a bit sad. I always thought it was quite nice.

Oh well....

Has anyone else done this?

Oh not Meghan. The other one

Fattymcfaterson · 08/01/2019 23:24

@joemaplin
Use Google. Search your name baby names mumsnet

I share mine with a politician 😂 the mumsnet search went crazy

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 08/01/2019 23:25

@leamaria do you like it? I never had a nickname (besides my mum calling me Lee-Lee, now Lanny) until my current job where everyone calls me Lea. I like it, though.

Cahira · 08/01/2019 23:25

I looked up mine. Apparently it's a good strong name, pretty but not frilly. Negative comments said it's a hard, harsh sounding name, not feminine at all.

I don't really like it so can't argue with that!

cavycavy · 08/01/2019 23:26

According to mn my middle name is ‘blah’.

Again, an 80’s classic.

@2kidsintow, I LOVE your name! This is the first I have heard of it! It sounds so exotic and beautiful to me! Smile

itsallgravybaby · 08/01/2019 23:26

@moreursulathanariel looks like we have the same name WinkWink hehe!

Shodan · 08/01/2019 23:28

Mine, apparently, is either 'lovely', 'sweet', or 'dull' Grin

What I like best though is some people dismissing it is as 'very 80s'. I was born in 1968, so it appears my mother, for once, was a bit ahead of a trend Shock Grin

Tartyflette · 08/01/2019 23:29

Hi there Joe or should I say Theresa? Grin

My name has over 500 threads! But although it's a popular name people seem to prefer the "ie" spelling rather than "y". I actually really dislike the ie spelling (and I've just read it so many times it doest look or sound like a name now). Some people also think it's too nicknamed. Meh, I like it.

Also searched DS name and opinions range from "love it" to "try hard" and people suggesting a name which is spelt similar but a completely different name (I hate when people mistake his name for this one). In real life I've never had a negative comment.

BeMoreKind · 08/01/2019 23:33

Well I'm very surprised OP. I've just MNetted my name and people love it! They think it's lovely, classic and due for a revival.
I think it's boring Grin

CandleWithHair · 08/01/2019 23:33

Not many people interested in my name, but those who are seem to be evenly split between thinking it’s ‘beautiful’ or ‘ugly’ Grin

Obviously I think it’s beautiful!

magentastardust · 08/01/2019 23:35

Mine is teeth itching revolting and reminds someone of a middle aged chain smoker mutton dressed as lamb woman apparently! aha oh dear!
Normally I get told it is a very pretty name.

rubyroot · 08/01/2019 23:35

Just searched mine.

Many said its a lovely name, one said its a beautiful name and a load said its a pretty name.

Well in that case I'm pleased to have been the recipent of that name!

CollyWombles · 08/01/2019 23:35

Searched on my phone didn't get many results. Safe to say my name is not popular and is considered old fashioned and chavvy, like Sharon or Tracey apparently!

I don't mind, I like my name.

rubyroot · 08/01/2019 23:35

I always wanted to be called Julia

JoeMaplin · 08/01/2019 23:35

@fattymcfaterson

Thanks for that. Mine is considered safe, lovely, strong but also not a proper name and a blunt, and the rest of the hits were suggestions of names for my famous namesake's various children !

SluggishSnail · 08/01/2019 23:36

My name is French, but not a name you see in textbooks (i.e. not Juliette or Francoise etc.). There was once a thread that started "Is [French name] a nice name?" and the answer was basically "no" aside from one poster whose DD had a friend with the name and thought it "wasn't too bad".
Apparently in Ireland it's an old lady's name. I have never met anyone Irish with the name....
In real life, I sometimes meet people who say it's a pretty name. Clearly they must be lying.

Buntybearbess · 08/01/2019 23:36

My first three names are all traditional english sounding but biblical in origin so they seem to all have good reviews and thoughts/preconceptions attached barring one of my middle names which is dull and dated and plain, it's Jane. Given purely for the J initial that my mother wanted me to have Grin

Flannelled · 08/01/2019 23:39

Wow. My parents did well. My first nane passes the MN test. My middle name is serene, elegant, beautiful, due for a revival apparently. Some odd shortenings of it though.

I'm not looking up DH. He won't do well. Poor husband.

My DDs middle name was discussed at length recently and universally hated. Her first name is either beutiful or pretentious and snobby with social climbers for parents depending on the thread. She'll survive. 😂 also lots and lots of references to a 80s TV programme which I absolutely loved and probably did influence me.

2019Newname · 08/01/2019 23:40

Just checked mine. It is an unusual name and only three threads ever on it. Opinions seemed to be 70% really like it and 30% awful/ horrible.

Definitely an opinion divider!

FrLukeDuke · 08/01/2019 23:40

Someone said women with dd1's name are all bitches. Dd1 is lovely though luckily!

gggrrrargh · 08/01/2019 23:42

Mixed opinions on my name!

‘Really cute’ and ‘really ugly’ on posts practically next to each other. A few votes for harsh sounding, definitely considered dated, and one for ‘it’s a cheerful friendly sounding name’ - I’ll take that!
