I just searched my own name on mumsnet...

So out of curiosity I searched my own name in the mumsnet search function to see what opinions are on my name as a ‘baby name’.

Turns out I have a very very horrible name that everyone hates!!!

Makes me feel a bit sad. I always thought it was quite nice.

Oh well....

Has anyone else done this?

My name’s variously: classic, 70s, and due a revival apparently. Just like me Grin

dontcallmelen · 08/01/2019 22:50

My comes up as really really dated, old fashioned & not in a good way gets lumped in with Sheila, Shirley, Barbara, Maureen😢

snowie01 · 08/01/2019 22:50

My name isn't mentioned much.

Vicki not Victoria

LuckyLou7 · 08/01/2019 22:50

My best friend is called Cheryl. Are you her? Do you have 3 DS and a DH who drives a taxi?

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/01/2019 22:51

awful, dated, dislike to love and nice.

I was surprised how many liked it to be fair.

Bythebeach · 08/01/2019 22:52

I’ve just done this but my name doesn’t come up. Not really surprised as I’ve not yet met another in real life.

FreshlyWashed · 08/01/2019 22:52

I just had a quick scroll, and saw a poster describe mine as fiesty.

Suspect the poster must've been thinking about me in RL, because I am, indeed, fiesty.

This is quite fun!

Heart game, op!

YeOldeTrout · 08/01/2019 22:53

Foulsome things r said about my name. It's a bog standard 1960s name (but centuries older). ho hum.

I loathe a name which is almost same as mine, but MNers gush over it as marvellous Confused. I hate almost-same-name so much, I tried to ban DC from using it when they have kids (while I'm alive, anyway). I suppose they could give it to a super ugly dog.

Flannelled · 08/01/2019 22:53

I've just looked at my name. I HATE my name and as a kid used to get very upset I could never get a pen with it on. However apparently it is MN approved. I feel validated. Grin. However MN wisdom insists I've spelling it wrong all these years. Hmm

FreshlyWashed · 08/01/2019 22:54

Heart??? Blush. Meant great. Sorry!

ShatnersBassoon · 08/01/2019 22:54

My name is acceptable according to MNers. It's a pain in the arse in real life and I have to spell it out a lot, but it does the job of being distinct enough for people to remember my name and it doesn't mark me out as being anything in particular.

cavycavy · 08/01/2019 22:54

LuckyLou7

Yes it’s me! How are you?

Grin

I once asked about my own name (I have a unusual unisex name) it got about 10 NOOO Why would you do that to a child.. and 1 " actually if you like it why not"..

I guess my parents was of the last opinon

poppiesallykatie · 08/01/2019 22:56

@cece, you may have the same name as me. There is a name thread going at the moment about the name Aurora and how the OP thinks it is not unusual; and my own name was suggested as really commonly used within that thread. I just checked some baby name sites and in fact it is so old that it is now way down the 100's in terms of popularity. So in fact it is now cool again and far less common that Aurora (which I think is a beautiful name anyway). So feeling good about it now!!

WomanWithAltitude · 08/01/2019 22:56

I've just searched my name. I've always been indifferent about it (don't hate it or anything), but apparently it's classic and elegant?

Pay no attention OP. No-one cares about names once they know the person. The name become the person they know e.g. if they know a lovely man called Keith it will sound like a lovely name attached to him.

PenCreed · 08/01/2019 22:57

Ahahaha, that is brilliant. Best comments on mine:
"inoffensive, but just a bit meh"
"Tiny, angry, wizened old woman" (that is my new life goal, right there)
"Beautiful, timeless name"
"simple, classy, sharp" (or maybe this one?)

whatsnewchoochoo · 08/01/2019 22:59

Not nice as nickname apparently. It was weird to see my name written down so many times

Newhousenewname · 08/01/2019 22:59

I just did it.
First 4 discussions, in order, were about:
a golden Labrador
a cat
a horse
a small dog
So my name is popular then Grin
for small pets Hmm

cavycavy · 08/01/2019 22:59

There is literally a whole thread of ‘omg noooo no no no. Why would you curse a child with a name as utterly vile as CHERYL. Urgh. Every Cheryl I know is a horrible fat cow” etc etc

Did not help my self-esteem and can’t see it having a revival thanks to the lovely Cheryl Tweedy tagging it onto as many surnames as she can over the last few years!

OP posts:
BlackeyedGruesome · 08/01/2019 22:59

cheryl has not had a revival, yet. It is too soon.

some of the things that kids are named these days seem dated and old peoples names to me. (arthur, elsie, iris, )

henry and george were considered old fashioned and weird when I was a teen but made a comeback by the time I hit twenties, they are receding again now.

sheila, shirley barbara maureen and ann, john all seem to be of a certain age.

then there were the sharons, helen, sarah, tracy, susan, andrew, robert, david. ruth, gail, julie

then emma, was everywhere.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 08/01/2019 23:00

My name comes under Lots of 'masculine girls names' requests

A few boys names

Or common 70's name

WillYouDoTheFandango · 08/01/2019 23:02

Wow. Tiny angry wizened old woman is a-maz-ing! Haha

cavycavy · 08/01/2019 23:03

One poster said it just reminded her of her auntie who has hair like an oil slick and rotten teeth.

My oldest niece would have been 7 on the date of posting so I can rest easy that it wasn’t her referring to me!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/01/2019 23:03

Try being called Loki 🙃
Dog name
Boys name
Terrible connotations
Not a real name
Blah blah blah

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/01/2019 23:04

I've never really thought about my name. It reached its popularity in the eighties and it's been downhill since.

DD's name, while still not used often, everyone said they loved it.
