I'm sure there has been many threads on this already.. read this morning that Mary is the hot favorite for girl & Henry for a boy.
Love Mary hope they use it, Princess Mary nice, fresh & underused, would be nice for Mary to have a comeback. Alice next at 6/1, prefer Mary.

IIRC it’s something to do with James I (of England). He was the Scottish King first (I think) and then became King of England. Why is that political? Don’t really know!

The William of Orange one I sort of get actually as I grew up in NI. I’d never thought of it before, but naming William William could actually have been quite a political hot potato back when he was born. Maybe not so much in England though, so perhaps that’s why they weren’t bothered..?

turnipfarmers · 10/04/2018 11:44

James 1st and the offence he caused to Guy Fawkes and co, James 2nd was a Catholic and was displaced, James 3rd was his self styled son and lead the Jacobite revolts and Prince William of Orange expelled James 2nd.

DanceDisaster · 10/04/2018 11:47

the offence he caused to Guy Fawkes and co

By “the offence caused”, do you mean that he had them brutally tortured and executed?

turnipfarmers · 10/04/2018 11:50

Yes, I didn't bother spelling it out as people all know the history surely?

DanceDisaster · 10/04/2018 11:55

Well, you’d be surprised! I think most bonfire night fans forget the history and think it’s all jolly japes burning an effigy of the poor bugger.

Doesn’t hurt to spell things out - I wouldn’t have known what the perceived problem with the name James was if you hadn’t explained it to me. Prime example of the British public’s general ignorance right there Wink!

turnipfarmers · 10/04/2018 11:57

not many people would know, I blame history A level and a good teacher Grin

I do tend to assume too much knowledge at times but I'm sure there are things that you know that I am clueless about.

Scabetty · 10/04/2018 12:01

I think Florence and Albert.

Thebirthdayparty · 10/04/2018 12:40

I will eat my hat if they ever name a girl Florence. No way. 😀

Alice, Mary, Victoria have to be contenders.

The politics surrounding James is regarding regnal numbers.

There were a lot of objections in Scotland when the current queen came to the throne that she was known as Elizabeth II, when we'd never had an Elizabeth the first. It was felt that the numbering should have started afresh after the Union, rather than ignore Scotland's numbering and just continue England's. There were riots, vandalism and a court case about it. The symbol EIIR doesn't appear on crown property in Scotland because of this.

The result was, it was agreed that future monarchs after Elizabeth would take the higher regnal number if there was a discrepancy between Scottish and English regnal numbers. Therefore a James would be known as James VIII, an Alexander would be Alexander IV, a Henry would be Henry IX, etc., even though England has never had a King Alexander before and Scotland has never had a King Henry.

However in practice, it was considered prudent to avoid Scottish names which might provoke scenes similar to those in the 1950s - on either side of the border - and just stick to the traditional ones that no-one will be up in arms about.

Pity, as I'm all for a MacBeth II myself. Grin

HoratioNightboy · 10/04/2018 13:13

Forgot to mention, James Stuart, the Old Pretender, is still regarded as James VIII by many in Scotland so any future James of the UK being named VIII would probably spark another Jacobite Rebellion, especially in the current political climate. That's why it is considered far more controversial a choice than any other Scottish king names.

Scabetty · 10/04/2018 13:16

😂😂 Gonna put a bet on Florence. Fab name for a Princess: Princess Flo.

Kneedeepinunicorns · 10/04/2018 13:34

It's unlikely they'll use John, it's considered an 'unlucky' name in the family due to King John and Prince John, the Queen's uncle who died as a child.

TheScottishPlay · 10/04/2018 13:42

Pp who said Isla. Your hard pressed to find a baby girl not called Isla where I live.

TheScottishPlay · 10/04/2018 13:42

You're

HeadingForSunshine · 10/04/2018 13:45

I reckon the baby will arrive by this weekend.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/04/2018 13:50

I don’t think she’s due until 23rd april (st George’s day) and was late with the other two.

applesandpears56 · 10/04/2018 14:29

Meghan has really shafted her with the timing of her wedding

Blackbirdblue30 · 10/04/2018 14:33

Arthur Henry Michael and Caroline Victoria Alice are my guesses.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/04/2018 16:43

You think Meghan had any say when the wedding would be? Ha ha

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 10/04/2018 16:52

Arthur Henry Michael and Caroline Victoria Alice are my guesses.

Caroline is a good thought as works for both sides of the family but is it too similar to Charlotte?

blackteasplease · 10/04/2018 23:25

It won't be Mary in my opinion. Too Catholic in association.

Alice seems quite likely. They tend to go for the bookies favourite so far.

Victoria might be a contender if they like but maybe a bit out of fashion.

Anne? Jane? Christina? Rose? Eleanor? Emily?

I can hear all of those tbh.

Philip seems likely for a boy.

blackteasplease · 10/04/2018 23:26

Holly would be good though!

Blackbirdblue30 · 11/04/2018 13:27

I think Charlotte and Caroline sound nice together if it's a girl even if they do have the same root. I think Rose might be in there too- Princess Margaret was Margaret Rose.
There's less choice for a boy. I believe it can't have a name already in use by a senior member of the Royal family so that rules out a lot of old traditionals.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 11/04/2018 13:32

Victoria and James.

FizzyGreenWater · 11/04/2018 21:37

Victoria Mary Caroline

Would like it if they got Slimcea in there somewhere but I don't think they will
