I'm sure there has been many threads on this already.. read this morning that Mary is the hot favorite for girl & Henry for a boy.
Love Mary hope they use it, Princess Mary nice, fresh & underused, would be nice for Mary to have a comeback. Alice next at 6/1, prefer Mary.

I wouldn’t say any names are particularly Protestant or catholic - but then I’m not Irish! I don’t think most people would say Mary was only a catholic name.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/04/2018 07:52

I wouldn't say it's "only" Catholic. But it's the most catholic girls name there is, surely. I'm not Irish either.

How about May, Queen Mother's name I think?

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 15/04/2018 08:07

What about Queen Mary of Teck?

They could go with Maria - most popular name I think in Greece.

Personally I think Alice for a girl & Arthur for a boy.

playinthedarkness · 15/04/2018 08:13

Victoria Elizabeth for a girl
Arthur Philip michael for a boy

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/04/2018 08:49

The Queen Mother was called Elizabeth not May.

JustaLittlePrick · 15/04/2018 12:55

Why is it a problem for them to use the name Mary? Don't protestants believe Mary was the mother of Jesus? I know she has greater significance in Catholicism but she's hardly persona non grata in the Anglican Church is she??? Confused

Kokeshi123 · 15/04/2018 13:06

"Too Catholic" names might be things like Bernadette or Imelda (neither of which is plausible for royalty anyway).

Mary is fine. Wasn't Mary II the one who basically helped her husband William of Orange take the crown of England by force to STOP her father James II from establishing a Catholic dynasty in England and to defend Protestantism in Europe? Mary was a common name for mainstream Protestant girls until the 1970s in England, and is still sometimes used as a middle name.

NigellasGuest · 15/04/2018 13:07

Oh, well, someone was called May!

JustaLittlePrick · 15/04/2018 13:41

Anyway, I don't think they'll use Mary because Princess Mary makes everyone think of the Australian one (now Danish).

It'll be Alice, mark my words.

Or it'll be a boy. Then I'm not sure, but would put money on Arthur.

Sevendown · 15/04/2018 14:47

Apparently Charlotte should have been ‘Lady’ rather than HRH and the Queen had to consent to the surplus Cambridge DCs getting a title above their station.

It says a lot about how much the couple think of themselves.

eloisesparkle · 15/04/2018 15:45

I think Caroline would be a nice tribute to Kate's mother Carole.
It will probably be Alice.
Or Arthur for a boy.
Or Louis.

Vexatious · 15/04/2018 15:48

Has there been an English royal called Louis before? The last famous royal Louis ended up with his head in a basket so if they're superstitious they might avoid that!

CelticSelkie · 15/04/2018 15:48

Love Mary. Isnt it a boy!? William supposedly let that slip.

EmilyAlice · 15/04/2018 15:52

May was Princess May of Teck who married George V and became Queen Mary, the Queen’s grandmother. Their daughter was Princess Mary, the Queen’s aunt.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 15/04/2018 15:53

I doubt he let anything slip! He's not that daft...

CelticSelkie · 15/04/2018 15:55

Wasnt parking for mortals blocked from 9th april to 30th so id say baby due about 16th april.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 15/04/2018 15:58

Yep that baby isn't far off now. It's funny how excited everyone is about a baby who will be Andrew's equivalent in 40 years time, ie a hated waster even by royalists standards

CelticSelkie · 15/04/2018 16:03

Lol spose so. The future randy andy. What a thought.

JustaLittlePrick · 15/04/2018 17:12

Why wouldn't all the Cambridge babies be prince and princess? They will be the children of the monarch.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/04/2018 17:44

‘Will be’ yes, but they aren’t at the moment.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/04/2018 18:06

justa no I don't think anyone has a "problem " with Mary as a name. But the British monarchy's rules of succession most definitely have a "problem" with Catholicism (ie a legal rule that the heir may not marry one) that I personally would've though precluded such an obviously catholic choice

ILikeMyChickenFried · 15/04/2018 18:29

I thought the queen's grandmother was Mary?

Georgie.... I have no idea what your point is.

It is interesting that a man concerned about overpopulation has decides to have at least 3 children though.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/04/2018 19:04

Erm. Well I wasn’t responding to you so all good then.

EmilyAlice · 15/04/2018 19:08

It seemed to be ok for the Protestant Queen Mary II 1662-1694. Also Queen Mary who died in 1953. It was a perfectly normal and very common girl’s name in the twentieth century. Not exclusively Catholic at all.
