I've just had DD, she is a whole 5 days old and we thought we'd picked a good name, but I've just received an email from a family friend saying that it's a terrible name.
Please tell me straight, is Ophelia Elizabeth Cole a horrible name?

Lovely name, rude friend unless she sees this rude phrase and is trying to warn you, but I think it's quite a stretch and nothing to worry about

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 27/03/2018 20:19

Your friend sounds rude & nasty but perhaps she is trying to alert you to the point I think DairyisClosed is referring to in the 4th reply to your post - ie the name is famous for the fictional character who goes mad with grief and drowns?

herethereandeverywhere · 27/03/2018 20:22

Perhaps it depends on accents.

It reads fine (though long) with the middle name but without, to me, it sounds like

"A-feel-of-your-(C)-ole"

with a Northern accent (north west).

lifechangesforever · 27/03/2018 20:25

What the hell did she actually write in this email?! She's no friend of yours.

Ophelia and Elizabeth were both on my list and they're beautiful.

eurochick · 27/03/2018 20:27

Your friend is rude. Ophelia and Elizabeth are lovely names. But a feel o your hole? Really? It's up there with Mike Hunt....

FML2017 · 27/03/2018 20:29

Yes but it’s Cole not hole so that’s irrelevant.

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/03/2018 20:29

I can think of lots of accents it would sound like feel your hole :(
If you want to keep it because you love the name as another poster suggested

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/03/2018 20:31

Posted too quick!
I’d look at options to double barrel it - Rose, May (although I dislike both those options) sure Mumsnetter can suggest lots of lovely names you could pair it with

Kangar00 · 27/03/2018 20:32

Beautiful name but.... Ophelia does commit suicide so that may be why they thought they should tell you

Serena1985 · 27/03/2018 20:33

Yes bullies are known for their attention to detail

swivelchair · 27/03/2018 20:33

When we told my family what we were calling DS1 (who completely and utterly fits his name, and it's really not particularly odd), my sister replied "you do know you're supposed to love him right?"

Now admittedly, we'd been winding them up for months with a ridiculous name, and only announced the real one once he was with us, and had a chance to try it on for a bit, but still... perhaps she should have engaged brain before commenting, because someone less obstinate/thick-skinned/sure of herself might have been offended!

April229 · 27/03/2018 20:34

Gorgeous name,

TheLegendOfBeans · 27/03/2018 20:35

I would be interested to see what the content of the email actually was but in short there are some things you just don't say and criticising your choice of name is one of those.

toolonglurking · 27/03/2018 20:39

"Sorry- Ophelia is a lovely name, and she is a beautiful baby. But how are you going to stand at the back door and shout “Ophelia- it’s time to come in for your tea. How is she going to learn to spell it?"

From the email.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/03/2018 20:40

Congratulations on new baby! Beautiful name
How very rude of your friend to be so blunt

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2018 20:41

(P) utting brackets in doesn’t prove anything. Grin

Loads of accents don’t pronounce the C at the start of words? What, now?

DiegoMadonna · 27/03/2018 20:42

Sorry- Ophelia is a lovely name, and she is a beautiful baby. But how are you going to stand at the back door and shout “Ophelia- it’s time to come in for your tea. How is she going to learn to spell it?

Wow. I'm not usually one of those mumsnetters that leaps to advise a confrontational approach, but that is so unbelievably rude and uncalled for.

diddl · 27/03/2018 20:43

"Ophelia does commit suicide "

A fictional character!

Not everyone who names a daughter Ophelia are thinking of her.

"But how are you going to stand at the back door and shout “Ophelia- it’s time to come in for your tea. How is she going to learn to spell it?""

Oh dear goodness!!

It's just not worth headspace!

PuppyMonkey · 27/03/2018 20:43

Ah, just seen update. In which case the only reply is a simple: “Shit off.”

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/03/2018 20:43

Ophelia, quite straightforward and a well known literary name
Youll not struggle nor with the child or any teacher
ophelia will learn her name in the usual way, same as all kids do
If your mate struggles maybe it reflects upon her spelling & literacy

VeronicaLodge · 27/03/2018 20:43

"Sorry- Ophelia is a lovely name, and she is a beautiful baby. But how are you going to stand at the back door and shout “Ophelia- it’s time to come in for your tea. How is she going to learn to spell it?"

Ah, so she just thinks you're being a bit fancy and hifaluting and for some reason thinks her opinion is worthy of being expressed to you.

She's a fanny.

Frusso · 27/03/2018 20:43

I love the name. Your friend was rude.

PhuntSox · 27/03/2018 20:45

Its lovely. She or he is being a twat. We know a lovely little Ophelia who gets called Fi (Fee) a lot.

Reply that it wont be a problem as you will just text her when its tea time Grin

BigPinkBall · 27/03/2018 20:47

I doesn’t matter what anyone thinks if you like the name.

I know lots of people who’ve given their children names that I wouldn’t pick in a million years for various reasons, even one that I think is downright irresponsible, but it’s nothing to do with me so I just say “that’s a nice name” and smile. I’m sure some people hate my DDs name as it’s a bit unusual but no one’s ever said anything.

I can just about twist Ophelia Cole to sound vaguely rude in my North Eastern accent but I did know someone, years ago, called Michael Hunt, it was amusing for all of about 5 minutes then I never gave it a second thought.
